I’m kind of suprised that they completely overlook a major advantage that <250g drones offer; and that’s the legal ability for non-citizens to fly drones. For example, I recently visited Mexico. Since I’m not a Mexican national, I can’t register my drone that’s over 250g. If I can’t register it, then I can’t legally fly it.

Because the <250g drones are exempted from the registration requirement, then I can fly my drone there without fear that the authorities will confiscate it (unless I should choose to do something foolish while there).

There are exceptions to these rules, but researching them is no trivial matter and I do not have a sense for how porous they are.

Don´t know how it works on the USA, but in many country’s what they ask for is MTOM (Maximum Take off Mass), not TOM (take off mass). So, if the Mavic Mini can fly with the propellers guards, the MTOM is ALWAYS above 250g… so, not a drone Toy

While it’s true that none of the 901.x rules in the Canadian aviation regs apply to sub250 drones, the following rule does apply to all remotely piloted aircraft regardless of weight:

"900.06 No person shall operate a remotely piloted aircraft system in such a reckless or negligent manner as to endanger or be likely to endanger aviation safety or the safety of any person."

What constitutes reckless, negligent or endangerment would be at the discretion of law enforcement and aviation authorities. So no wild west in that sense. That said, the Mavic Mini is a very convenient way to take aerial photos/video while visiting Canada so long as common sense is used and it meets your needs.
