DUDE!! You are an outstanding instructor! I flew helicopters in the USMC but that was a long time ago, so when I picked up a drone recently, I looked for a capable, articulate instructor, and there you were!

One of my favorite skill drills is jump rope, or wo I call it. My daughter had a rope running from the tree to a 6×6 post I put up for the hammock and where UAV Coach did horizontal boxes, I did vertical boxes. I’d fly sideways over the rope, stop, descend, stop, fly sideways, stop, ascend and stop and repeat. Once you’re comfortable with this drill, rotate your drone 90 degrees and repeat. Once you’ve done that several times, rotate the drone by 45 degrees and repeat. If you’re a pretty new pilot, stick to the angles that your avoidance sensors will help protect you from crashes.

A newbie here. I am setting up my training centered around these exercises. Just got my first drone at 66 yo, and I need to get my muscle memory back in my hands, just like I had when flying fixed wing aircraft. Will keep you posted on how I do, if I don’t destroy the little drone first……..thanks for the help.

  34. David on August 15, 2022 at 8:45 pm

so as a rule of thumb – do you spend more time watching the drone itself or watching via the display? i tend to do the latter to avoid hitting objects but seems to make controlling a lot more difficult and lose orientation of the drone… (ps newbie with only a few hours experience)
