US Air Force Releases Video of New Combat Drone: XQ-58A Valkyrie

The U.S. Air Force has released the first videos of its latest combat drone, the XQ-58A Valkyrie. The new aircraft, which went from concept to first test flight in 2.5 years, “behaved as expected” on its first test flight this week, according to the Air Force.

The 76-minute inaugural flight occurred on March 5, 2019 at Yuma Proving Grounds in Arizona. The Air Force released a short 15-second video of the first flight to show it off, something that the military doesn’t do with all of its aircraft.

“XQ-58A is the first example of a class of UAV that is defined by low procurement and operating costs while providing game changing combat capability,” Doug Szczublewski, AFRL’s XQ-58A Program Manager, said in a statement.

Incredible how big this drone really is!! the wing span reminds me of the spy plane from the 50’s the U-2. I do not understand why we are not using these now to keep the Taliban back or even hitting our own equipment that the Afghan army left behind.

If we’re seeing it now it’s probably already been in military use for at least 3-5 years if not longer. In 2020 I’m guessing US drones are much further advanced and something we would see in a Sci-Fi film.

A very impressive drone that is very low observable with a rigid rugged design.
    Impressive.

Russia from USSR times has 1200 Mig19, which after one-day modernization and installation of robot in a cabin permanently makes this aircraft a drone with exceptional characteristics. Those who are on it the subject ask you granddads if they were involved in Korean War…

Bah….is not a good idea! When one State have created the new arms or guns…. Another States produced another arms superior….WHERE IS THE STOP IN THIS ?

Why do drone operators seated at air conditioned consoles need to wear nomex flight suits? T-shirts, shorts, and tennis shoes would suffice.

    2. Big mistake publishing such detailed imagery; china will have already started building their own copies.

    Wonderfully designed equipment.

Very aggressive looking Can it make an screaming attack sound? Just to make it more threatening. Or maybe best to surprise.

This Drone also looks good too, not like those crappy looking Drones they been making.

Really good value. This is a much smarter and cost effective way to move forward with the new challenges facing the US in the near future. Bravo.

I have to admit I was against using Drones, because Guys like Me still want to Pilot Fighters within it’s own Cockpit while feeling the different Aerodynamics, but the effectiveness of Drones is also incredible. Also, using that Loyal Wing Man Program, any manned Fighter could call in Air Support or back up at a moments notice with a Drone.

What I’d love to know is just how many Gs these Unmanned Jet Aircraft are able to pull & just how long it can be sustained. I’m sure either way it’s more & Longer then what a Live pilot is able to maintain or even sustain. I’m sure these aircraft if built properly ( Which I know they are …. it the United states) along with other reasons. Are built Strong enough with the right materials & Engineering, Then I can only imagine the amount of Gs positive & Negative it could pull & just the kind of maneuvers they’ll be able to pull off. I mean if pilots are able to pull away from SAM missiles, I won’t say easily or that they are always able to get away especially super Sonic SAMs but I can just imagine how much easier & quicker Unmanned Aircraft will be able to lose a SAM threat compared to a LIVE pilot that has to Endure the brunt of every single G-Force Struggling to maintain Consciousness during every high stress Maneuver while playing Cat & mouse with a SAM missile trying to keep track of it while also conducting Evasive maneuvers & Constantly trying to maintain Consciousness is alot . But if you remove that equation & your able to conduct maneuvers at higher speeds & Gs then I’m positive there a Calculable percentage of much greater success. BUT not just against SAMs but also Enemy aircraft. A good Demonstration of this is the movie The Green Lantern Dog fight training scene

If the XQ-58A can land on the sea, the amphibious assault ship can depart recovery ships and return the XQ-58A to the amphibious assault ship.
This ship is much cheaper than the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and the F-35C.
