If you’re on a mega-budget, I should make an honorary mention to the good old Phantom 3 Standard. Shoots 2.7k on a 1/2.3″ sensor but shoots 12 megapixel RAW photos just like the bigger models. Its really capable and cheap as crap now because its old, should be able to find it used on Craigslist, Ebay, Facebook Marketplace, Offerup for like $250 or lower.

Mavic Mini – $400
2.7k and JPEG only but only $400 and can live in your pocket

Mavic Air 2 – $800
4K 1/2 inch sensor and REALLY bang for your buck at $800, such a good deal. 60fps as well.

Mavic 2 Pro – $1500
4K 1 inch sensor, 20 megapixel RAW photos. The holy grail, still worth it. Still worth just getting and not worth waiting on some Mavic 3 that’s ‘coming anyday’ just like the last 2 years, seriously.

Autel Evo II 6K – $1800 [NOT the 8K version please]
6K 1 inch sensor, 20 megapixel photos. More like 4K-equivalent really. Kind of weird, just got it so still testing but when you get over the odd stuff it has a GREAT picture, maybe on par with the Mavic 2 Pro, but not as intuitive, easy to fly, cool to show all the dads on the beach, or as feature rich. I’ll do a review later but so far has helped me pick up exactly 0 step-moms.

Inspire 2 + X5S camera – $8000+ Used
Shoots 5.2K RAW Video (literally filming in RAW photos)
5.2K 422 Prores and 4K Proress 4444 incase you know what that all means. Its an insanely high quality image that is mega flexible and so enjoyable just to watch ungraded b-roll with it, but man is it a pain in the butt to get out, lug around, deal with the attention and the noise it has. It’s more like a once in a while, Ace in the hole to blow something out the water or shoot Stock Footage and practice cinematography. Interchangeable lenses are really nice too.

Your channel is really good. I have learned so much from your quick ass tutorials – and not all drone related. I’m going to be changing my own style to reflect much of what you do. Thanks.

Agreed with another comment, your video should have gone way over 10M by now. The one thing that impressed me the most is your presentation skill.

The Mini 2 now shoots in raw and 4k. Same size as the Mini, 249g. I wonder if you think that is good enough for Pro work?

Excellent review. Thank you for taking the time to show us your "stuff". Great stuff, this helps me decide on which drone I should start with. I know nothing yet, not even a photographer but this will be a personal excursion for me to enjoy and let it unfold.

  34. Sniper on May 25, 2022 at 7:22 pm

Great advice! I have a limited budget, so can’t buy multiple drones, I have yet to get my first drone and this video has helped a lot to decide. But now there is Mavic Air 2 S, I think it has a 1" sensor, descent price. Wondering if that would move it closer to Mavic 2 Pro. Mavic 2 Pro is slightly beyond my budget, maybe could find a nice used one that would move it into my budget. Otherwise, will probably start with Mavic Air 2 S.

  36. David Miller on May 25, 2022 at 7:22 pm

So, drone complexity has become a photography issue and not that of flying a drone.
It seems like the differences you make between the levels of models is the camera and software for photography.
The ‘best beginner’ drone seems to be the mavic 2. For bang for your buck, has all the complexity of a professional instrument but still has easier editing files and ‘good enough’ image quality without heavy editing.
Then the 2 pro for really serious videos. With very complex editing, but for image quality, well worth it. That is, if you know what you’re doing in the editing process.

  37. Melon on May 25, 2022 at 7:24 pm

Good video, but FPV drones are about 5x cheaper than you claimed, you can buy/build a very solid drone for $200, not including googles/controllers.

  38. Graham Fisher on May 25, 2022 at 7:24 pm

    absolutely brilliant video.

  45. Nobody Here on May 25, 2022 at 7:33 pm

I know I am way after the point as I scroll through your older videos but I am really liking the straight forward approach you take. I just bought a DJI Air 2S. I have played around with a couple of toy drones but not any real ones like those sold by DJI. I have been a nurse since 1994 but I started having heart issues right before covid hit. I had heart surgery in June but I’m not the same and I can’t nurse anymore. I am hoping to primarily learn videography and stop sitting around waiting to "go back to normal" but I do not like being on medical disability so if I can find a way to start making some money at the same time, that would be fantastic. now…back to binging your content 😁
