Nice View of the "old" times

The Karma was not a ‘failure’ initially. If I recall correctly there was a massive buzz surrounding it because it was a folding drone. Not even DJI had cottoned on to folding arms (or at least that’s what we all thought until the Mavic came out about 3 days after the Karma – and just blew it out of the water). But I do recall seeing the Karma release and thinking "wow, it fits in a bag!" (we were only used to Phantom-type body shapes at the time). I actually think the Karma could have been a success, but that battery clip failure killed it. GoPro (at the time) had more than enough resource to take on DJI and, had the Karma not failed, the drone landscape might look quite different today. I guess that could be said for a lot of products in the drone industry though…. Cheers for the trip down memory lane Justin!

  16. tobu on September 2, 2022 at 8:47 pm

Nice vid, but sadly no mention of the real pioneers of all this, a team of high school students from a STEM competition in Germany (Jugend Forscht), whose invention of the quadcopter lead to the "X Ufo" toy from Silverlit, probably the first mass produced drone (with brushed motors and a mechanical gyro). Must have been n the early 2000s I believe. The same guys went on to make flight controllers, brushless systems, GPS navigation, you name it – many years before DJI was even a thing. Way ahead of their time.

  28. NQ0A Mark on September 2, 2022 at 9:05 pm

That was great fun! It was in the fall of 2016 when I got my start in drones. And so true, what a long way we have come. It will be interesting to see how things go from here, as we are faced with some serious challenges ahead in manufacturing and supply chain issues that are going to be pretty tough on all tech industries soon. We really need to bring back manufacturing back home to the US. I guess we will find out soon enough. Thanks for the trip down memory lane Justin. Cheers…
