The US Army Wants Biodegradable Bullets That Sprout Plants
“The DoD…is soliciting proposals for biodegradable bullets ‘loaded with specialized seeds to grow environmentally beneficial plants that eliminate ammunition debris and contaminants.’ Such materials best suited for these bullets could include the same biodegradable plastics used to make water bottles or plastic containers. Or it could be some other material altogether.”

Pentagon successfully tests micro-drone swarm
“The Pentagon may soon be unleashing a 21st-century version of locusts on its adversaries after officials on Monday said it had successfully tested a swarm of 103 micro-drones.The important step in the development of new autonomous weapon systems was made possible by improvements in artificial intelligence, holding open the possibility that groups of small robots could act together under human direction.”

UK military to build prototype ‘laser weapon’
“The UK Ministry of Defence has officially awarded a £30m contract to produce a prototype laser weapon. The aim is to see whether “directed energy” technology could benefit the armed forces, and is to culminate in a demonstration of the system in 2019.”

Drone is good, but you need foot on the ground to secure an area. Drone alone cannot win a war. If it does, Vietnam, Afganistan, Libya, Yamen, Samolia would be a walkover.

Also, once both parties start to target to each other infrastructure, the more advance country will have more to lose, than the other side. Like Saudi have more to oil refinary to lose compare to Yamen. Saudi is more target rich.

  22. Peter Smythe on April 7, 2021 at 1:17 am

Another reason to use auto-targetting lasers: YOU CAN’T HIT A DRONE WITH A GUN.

And if you do, One Thousand flying bombs overall, One Thousand flying bombs, you shoot one down explodes on the ground, 999 flying bombs overall.

A third reason is that thus far, human shooters have noticed that drones do not always get mission-killed by one bullet. Yes, you’re reading that right. A tiny racing drone took 4 hits, and hundreds of rounds into the air with almost no cover for several minutes, to kill. If it had had a small bomb or a gun on it, everyone shooting would’ve been subject to attack multiple times before the thing was downed.

Let’s get something straight: if you’re within the range where you’re accurate enough to hit it, you’ve got a couple of seconds before it is in your face. 99% of people will not be able to stop just 2 potentially-exploding drones flying at them in zig-zagging rolls and dizzying loops at 60 mph. Nobody, and I mean nobody, will be able to stop 1000. Even with the lasers, good luck. Laser turrets mostly don’t have great turn rates, and WWII AAA wanted enemy planes to be 1400 meters up so they could turn faster than the planes could move. Let’s hope laser turrets would swivel quickly.

  37. Tim Munyon on April 7, 2021 at 1:44 am

Think of a semi-autonomous drone swarm that can be deployed from missiles, gather intelligence, deploy weapons (including NBC), snarl electronics, and then recharge and refuel to do it over and over again at a host station. In the face of this technology, you can either 1.) deploy your own drone-killing machines, 2.) theoretically deploy an EMP generator that renders them useless, 3.) attempt to breach their communications and gain control over the swarm yourself, or 4.) maintain other forms of deterrence (e.g., nuclear) that reduce the probability of you being attacked. Unfortunately, option 2 disrupts your unshielded electronic systems too, so not great. Command and control is pretty tight, so option 3 is possible, but probably not sustainable. Option 4 risks a retaliatory strike. Thus, we are in, and will continue to be in, a "drone arms race" around the world.

I cannot imagine sitting on the front lines when you hear a swarm of these drones coming your way, backed by aerial drones with air-to-ground weapons. It would be terrifying. The persistence of these vehicles will also render traditional guerrilla and insurgency techniques obsolete. The smaller drones could literally just wait or hide on the ground and charge in the sun until they detect someone walking by, and they don’t ever sleep or take breaks. If equipped with energy-directed weapons, they wouldn’t even need ammunition reserves.

Unfortunately, the ability to wage war without human losses to the antagonists will make the probability of military antagonism more likely. There is something different about killing someone through a computer screen than in the field. No smells. No fear to yourself. It will make killing sadly easy. Developing nations will have no choice but to fall in line or develop NBC weapons that give them leverage, and I ultimately think that EMPs will be the defensive weapon of choice against this technology and guided energy weapons. In the wake of large-scale conflict with drones and guided energy weapons, it’s not hard to envision battles afterward being fought on horse-back. Ironic to come full circle…

  40. Ken Bradshaw on April 7, 2021 at 1:47 am

I don’t think the weapon is the concern. Detection is. A drone hides. And a drone is expendable. And a drone hugs the earth. Advances to and replacements for radar are imperative, both earth and space bound. We are not hearing about them. But that is what is critical.

  43. Denis Volkov on April 7, 2021 at 1:50 am

There is one obvious advantage to lasers over bullets. The speed of light. No more leading targets. No more people dodging your fire by hitting the ground. What you aim for will be hit, period.

also i think the instant speed and accuracy of lazers (cause no one has told them about aerodynamics yet) was glanced over.
