In a robot lab at TEDGlobal, Raffaello D’Andrea demos his flying quadcopters: robots that think like athletes, solving physical problems with algorithms that help them learn. In a series of nifty demos, D’Andrea show drones that play catch, balance and make decisions together — and watch out for an I-want-this-now demo of Kinect-controlled quads.

that was awesome …
Perhaps a larger quadcopter could be fitted with an array of diagnostic tools: a geiger muller counter, a magnetometeter, a gpr (ground penetrating radar) and so on. It could be used for archeology, like reaching the tops of egyptian piramids which all have a landing platform type , the mountains of king salomon, or certain mountains in sinai and india supposedly associated with contact with superior beings ancient aliens …
awesome

This was eight and a half years ago and it’s still a great video. I’d love to see an update in 2022.
Just WOW!
Very clear demonstration, unfortunately the lighting and that curtain diminish the visuals. please make the background dark (use a plain flat dark background instead of that curtain)and paint the rod and quad copter in a colour (white or yellow) to make all things visible, use coloured water in that glass. For such a brilliant lecture and demo the fine details to give maximum effect is ignored due to ignorance.

but a little helicopter or glider does everything better. only on engine on those, faster and very slow speeds. waaaay more efficient.
After having watched this video (2019), I decided what I wanted to study and do in life: Control Theory.
I am following this dream: I am currently a 2nd Year Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Student😁😅.
