Skydio 2 Drone – This Is Why It Will Succeed.

The much anticipated Skydio 2 drone has finally been announced. This fully autonomous drone is like nothing we have ever seen, and it’s success will be a result of 2 things – the software and the people that created it. Could this finally be the American made drone we have been waiting for?

I would love to see a Congress member get behind this if they had a Child of their own lost in the wilderness and a high tech DJI drone could help find them. This bill would be crushed immediately. At the same time I’m not against bringing businesses back to America but over 90% of everything we buy is made in foreign countries! So are those Chinese shoes you got from Walmart spying on you let alone our cell phones Or game consuls, this is just plain silly at this point!!!!!!!!!

  2. Chad Pugh on March 21, 2021 at 12:29 am

I love how he says Phantom Pro version 2.0 is a mouthful so he would just refer to it as Phantom. Then refers to it as Phantom Pro version 2.0 the rest of the video.

sorry don’t share your view on spying game why is dji allowed to collect our data "

It’s interesting your comments about the China Security issue was posted here 10 months ago. Not having a go at you, everyone is entitled to their option and these concerns may not have been as public back then, just wondering if you still have the same opinion given more recent geopolitical events?

The thumbnail of this video says it’s the Tesla of the skies. It may not be a good analogy, as that would be saying it’s an overpriced pile of junk that’s badly built, requires extensive repairs and is made exclusively for people who value false virtue signaling over practicality and have more money than brains.

  15. Steve Muth on March 21, 2021 at 12:51 am

The bill is about backdoors access to data built in DJI drones that is then possibly mined by the Chinese (gps, facial rec., etc.) It’s not about money, market share or competition. As a consumer, educate yourself.

  16. LifeIsFun on March 21, 2021 at 12:51 am

Great drone, awesome team, but failure to bring it to masses fast. Right now the expect you to wait 7 or 8 months to get it?
This is like anything else in the tech market , if you can’t supply it fast someone else will.

  17. Robert jr on March 21, 2021 at 12:52 am

    Is that the Tesla emblem

  19. Mark Kempton on March 21, 2021 at 12:53 am

Just came across this video. Looks like the drone is still vaporware at this point. Question: I’m still relatively new to drones (less than a year), but how is it legal to operate a drone while riding a bike/driving a car/etc? I thought the pilot must maintain VLOS and have someone else operate the vehicle, etc.

I’m interested in seeing the sky do to crash in a swimming pool and see if it’s sealed enough to where you don’t have to worry about drying out and rice like I’m doing right now with my Maverick Pro I actually was filming statue with water around it and accidentally clicked it they went into the water but typical rookie mistake I guess I’ve only been flying for about a month and a half. It didn’t do any other damage just was submerged under water for about 3 minutes . Thank God I had a long stick in the back of my pickup truck cuz I’m a paraplegic in a wheelchair so it wasn’t like I could jump in or lay across the age of the found in reach my drone… and also is there anything else I should do other than leave it in rice for 3 days I’m putting it outside during the day in the heat in the rice so if there’s anything else I need to do please let me know also I’ve got the battery and rice as well but I’ve read some blogs about it and it’s kind of 50/50 should I throw the battery out or should I keep it?

  21. BpassionalTv on March 21, 2021 at 12:55 am

So after we just killed Irans top general you still think they wouldn’t use drones to spy??????

Dude .. you were off by a bit. 7 months later this drone sucks ass for us real drone photo/video graphers. Skydio2 tracking sure is nice but it’s too autonomous and once it hits a tree area… forget about getting cinama like footage… it bobs and weaves and makes the footage Look Like you are a thief and it keeping a eye on you.

  27. Ray Keogh on March 21, 2021 at 1:02 am

I dont know why as a subscriber I am only seeing this now not last year because ive seen the one when you got it, Believe me when I say I am not being RUDE here, a lot of Americans don’t really realise what the outside world , not just Eatstern but more Western people collectively think. That is, American people will BELIEVE what ever their leader will tell them and the live in the land of the FREE, all Europeans think no Country is the land of the FREE and all GOVERMENTS are corrupt , and we are as FREE as they let us think we are, The amount of street cred your video has just got for me is miles higher than DJI or Skydio can fly haha, As soon as this Corvid 19 is sorted I will be buying the Skydio 2 or 3 depending how long this lasts, believe me they are working on it as I type. for the price of the Skydio 2 and what you get is way more than what you get with DJI, I have lost 2 top DJI drones in Scotland using the folloe me, the Phantom 3 and the Mavic Pro I now have the Mavic pro 2 and it is better but not great at the active tracking, I tried to do a funny covid19 film where I was the only person left in the world to the tune ( and I think at your age you may know the song) " in the year 2525 " The Mavic 2 Pro lost me so many times I gave up in post production of my first trial. I never bothered getting the footage I wanted to get and I know the Skydio 2 would of done the job with ease to make me get all the pictures and footage I knew was out there but gave up. Sorry about the book ive just wrote carry on with the great tutorials your now my most respected YouTuber. Many thanks Ray K. UK. YNWA.

  28. Miran Papac on March 21, 2021 at 1:08 am

Skydio 2 got me excited about drones again, enough to buy it. However, you can’t buy it as they can’t make them fast enough. Yes, all the big drone channels got one but if you want to order one now there is at least a 7-8 month long waiting list. So it will probably be at least a year before someone can "impulse buy" this drone. You can have an amazing product, best in its class but if you can’t get it out there to the people that might want it then you are not feeding that feedback loop and it gives others (well DJI) a chance to catch up in this segment if it senses demand and feels that more money can be made.

The actual truth is that China has been in planting all kinds of technology in military weaponry being issued to the United States military and civilian radios etc. They are infiltrating with technology that will give them the edge during an invasion. These things have been found and are being dealt with currently behind the scenes, thus the obvious trade war we are having with China putting them in their place where they belong

  30. Phil Culpepper on March 21, 2021 at 1:11 am

Wait, a minute 24 in and he’s saying a "made up" security concern? GTHOH! What part of "stolen in China" do you not understand. You think for one second that China doesn’t steal foreign IP or uses their exported; in this case DJI drones to spy on and or collect data, then you must live in Unicornatopia! F* them and their stolen tech; you probably are invested in DJI and Huawei.

  34. Joseph My Life - Kano Moto on March 21, 2021 at 1:15 am

I plan on buying a Skydio 2. I wasn’t interested in learning how to fly a complex drone. Skydio seems like the perfect drone for me and what I do.
I would go without a drone rather than to directly support a Chinese company. Hopefully the USA will ground all DJI’s.

  35. SLICK WHEELS on March 21, 2021 at 1:15 am

The question is where DJI is located and purpose of it? SZ DJI Technology Co., Ltd. (doing business as DJI) is a Chinese technology company headquartered in Shenzhen, Guangdong with factories throughout the world.

    BOYCOTT China

  37. Benjamin Sahlstrom on March 21, 2021 at 1:16 am

I believe that banning technology from communist countries is VERY WISE. DJI should be banned entirely in the US. The Chinese cant be trusted.

  38. Christian Lewis Photography on March 21, 2021 at 1:19 am

I will back DJI all day long. This is the wrong way of doing business in my view. America is dominating most other businesses in the world as it is. Apple, Amazon, Google, EBay to name a few.
Of course the drone looks ok, but it’s meant to be autonomous more than to be flown by an operator. I doubt it would be allowed in the UK at the moment.

Thank you for a very strong review.

  43. Andre Benn on March 21, 2021 at 1:25 am

Great technology no doubt but does not fit my use case, plus the autonomy aspect when applied makes flying a more harrowing experience as it sometimes makes its own decision that freaks you out. And that controller sucks. In the 1st place, it should never just be about buying American, it should be about buying the best. Let’s wait for skydio’s next iteration.

  44. SteveO Carpentry on March 21, 2021 at 1:26 am

I was about to buy the Maverick to Pro or perhaps the Enterprise I’ve been waiting for 6 months cuz of the covid-19 and the fact that we are definitely deep in the red with China

I dont like the non fold able propeller arms

  50. Daryl Davis on March 21, 2021 at 1:28 am

I admire what Skydio are doing, but I don’t see a big threat to DJI right now. Here are my gripes with Skydio: no ADS-B (from a company headquartered in Silicon Valley, some of the most congested airspace in the US); cellphone-sized image sensor; won’t fly in low light, even under manual control; an afterthought controller, apparently sourced from Parrot, and indifferent handling under manual control. Some people would add "doesn’t fold" to the list, but if being able to stick it in your pocket isn’t a real issue for you (be honest) a rigid airframe is simpler, more reliable, and less expensive.

As I write this, we have videos of the Skydio 2 crashing into a power line while chasing Ken Heron’s motorcycle ( ) and into a lake while chasing Billy Kyle’s car ( ). Power lines are hard to see, and Skydio’s collision avoidance system is optical (which is why Skydio won’t take off in low light) : my first flight instructor told me, "Look for towers. If you see towers, you know wires are running between them." For low-level flight, substitute "poles" for "towers," but either situation means the pilot has to has to have enough awareness of the environment to keep the AI out of trouble.
