RQ-11 Raven UAV Drone – Hand Thrown Launch & Break-apart Landing.

RQ-11 Raven UAV Drone – Hand Thrown Launch & Break-apart Landing.

Members of the 594th Transportation Co. from Fort Campbell, KY train on how to operate the RQ-11 Raven which is a small hand thrown UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle.) The UAV is used to help secure routes, by ensuring the areas ahead and behind are clear of threats. When the Raven lands on the ground it’s designed to break apart into several pieces, which helps absorb the impact energy of the landing. Video by Staff Sgt. Daniel Symonds | Regional Command Southwest | Date: 02.22.2012

Feb. 2018—-Sorry to say, I am NOT impressed with this pos, ESPECIALLY for the cost and number of people and time it takes to assemble/in the air. Just checked Ebay for quad drone and they start at $38 and upwards WITH a remote that with an smart phone will show you what the drone sees. ————————————————-Decided to some checking on this drone and from Wikipedia:The plane can fly up to 6.2 miles (10.0 km) at altitudes of appx 500 feet (150 m) above ground level (AGL) and over 15,000 feet (4,600 m) above mean sea level (MSL), at flying speeds of 28–60 mph (45–97 km/h). The U.S. Army deploys the Raven at company level. From Army technology’s website, it states: "Each Raven costs around $35,000, but the total system costs approximately $250,000". From the Quora website: The typical quadcopter (meaning civilian drones) has a flight time of 15 minutes or less. Light ones with tiny FPV cameras (not full sized video or photos) might be able to manage 30 minutes.

Their flight speeds typically limit them to on-the-spot surveillance, not tracking. Further, these are normally operated within line of sight anyway. In fact, the FAA regulations in the United States require this. At 25 mph for 15 minutes you get a range of 6 miles. But note, the standard radio transmitters used to control them further limit the range to less than half a mile (sometimes MUCH less, control has been lost at 500 feet in some videos I have seen). ——————————————————I’d also like to note that MANY civilian drones now have tracking ability as demonstrated on more than one Youtube video. These things are in SMALL suitcases WITH controller. I’ve seen more than one Army guy trying to launch this thing and SPLAT, right into the ground. With a quad drone, you go not only go straight up, but you can actually go backwards, something the Raven can’t. Gotta wonder…..how much in "political contributions" did some congressman/senator get from the manufacturer in getting this to be used by the Army? Having said all this, wonder if anyone in Youtube land knows someone in Iraq, etc. that is using a civilian drone for their personal use? Coming under fire from unknown direction(s)? Break out the civilian drone and check everything out within one half a mile REALLY quick. Or does this make too much sense?

So many of you pretend to be an RC expert, but you guys really have no idea what it takes to design one for MILITARY. These things should withstand nonstop abuse and should still deliver what it should for many month in all kinds of bad environments, not to mention bad pilot skill…the breakaway landing is an excellent design. Also note the ground support and communication equipment. Yes, the thing probably cost quite a lot more than what it could have really cost, but enough with HobbyKing…heh.

Мы такой самолёт ещё в 89 году на авиамодельном кружке делали. Летал хорошо. Бедные американские военные, на ноутбук защиту от солнечного света из коробки сделали

How much of a beating can these things take. Surely landing it by intentionally smashing it into the ground aint helping its longevity

It’s just like the Cox PT-19 U-Control trainer we used to fly as kids – the wing was held on with a rubberband to protect it during crashes.

Hey my old job fuck i miss that old peice of plastic tho i didn’t have as many people when i used it must be for the showing of it usually the squad sits up a defensive prim id check and double check systems and equipment to run it then i had a squad mate hold and id throttle up and he would launch it also…. we never crashed ours that was very frowned upon in my unit id bring it to a glide and have a squad mate usually the same guy would run along with it and catch it then we would break it down and box it then move out… but yeah fuck i miss that job it was fun

  36. ZY on December 12, 2021 at 12:24 pm

so you need a team to fly that bird? looks harder then i thought…

The landing is not good for the prop. It needs to balance again are changed every time if it hits the ground

  39. Hector Portillo on December 12, 2021 at 12:26 pm

If you read the instructions you would understand why it breaks apart when it lands, those ravens are actually great drones
