Phalanx CIWS Close-in Weapon System In Action – US Navy's Deadly Autocannon

Footage of the Phalanx CIWS Close-in Weapon System in various target practicing exercises.

The Phalanx Close-In Weapons System (CIWS) was developed as the last line of automated weapons defense (terminal defense or point defense) against anti-ship missiles (AShMs), including high-g and maneuvering sea-skimmers. The basis of the system is the M61 Vulcan Gatling gun autocannon.

Consisting of a radar-guided 20 mm (0.79 in) Gatling gun mounted on a swiveling base, the Phalanx has been used by Navies around the world.

The CIWS is designed to be the last line of defense against anti-ship missiles. Due to its design criteria, its effective range is very short relative to the range of modern ASMs, from 1 to 5 nautical miles (9 km). The gun mount moves at a very high speed and with great precision. The system takes minimal inputs from the ship, making it capable of functioning despite potential damage to the ship. "She weighs one hundred fifty kilograms and fires two hundred dollar, custom-tooled cartridges at ten thousand rounds per minute. It costs four hundred thousand dollars to fire this weapon…for twelve seconds."

Id like to see more redundancy with these on ships. One getting knocked out after taking damage doesn’t seem unrealistic. EW is also likely to make it harder for the few that ships do carry.

One of these would be good for hone protection or for a cartel organization when they get swatted. Just have it on the highest part of ur house and anything that moves gets turned to mush.

They sell private versions of those for civilians. Not as effective but last time i check civilian cars and civilian humans dont have metal shielding

  29. A_S_Mikael on August 7, 2020 at 10:05 am

It was very funny, how many bullets needed to shoot to a training target that was a fishe boat, without shooting rocket, torpedo or firing bullet to warshipe
