NEVER DO THIS with your drone

NEVER DO THIS with your drone

NEVER DO THIS with your drone

I took my DJI spark for a flight above the clouds at high altitude…. erm, no I didn’t! There was a thick but shallow fog blanket over Edinburgh. I thought I’d sneak above for a look, but the drone downward facing sensors stopped the descent once it hit the fog blanket, and i almost ran out of battery. Still, DJI makes incredible drones and this is by far and away my favourite piece of technology i’ve ever bought.

I like the Spark so much I have 12 of them and still looking for more. People always want to upgrade then wish they would have kept their Spark…

Just got my first drone, a Nazgul5 V2 6s, the other day. Immediately blasted a prop through my finger at full throttle by holding it while it was in angle mode (self-leveling) like a dingus. The proximity of his props to his face gives me major anxiety lol.

    Good drone lesson.

Had this happen to me with my mini in fog in the smoky mountains. Scared the holy living fuck out of me. Just keep holding the stick down and pray

If you go above with a dji always come down with atleast 45 to 40 % battery to you have plenty of time to come back down

  9. Abdi salaam hassan nor on June 21, 2022 at 7:12 pm

i wanna try and i will turn off all the sensors

  10. gavin oliver on June 21, 2022 at 7:16 pm

You can turn off the sensors permanently but u wud have to do some research as i dont know how its done personally

  11. TheWizeJSun on June 21, 2022 at 7:18 pm

Just got the DJI mini SE as my first drone and I’m in love with it! Didn’t have all the bells and whistles but for a beginner like me it gets the job done quite well

  13. Julio Gonzo on June 21, 2022 at 7:23 pm

I wonder if it would still fly with the sensors covered with tape or something?

  14. xmr soldier on June 21, 2022 at 7:24 pm

I’ve done it many times with my mavic air 2

  15. Boywithuke kid on June 21, 2022 at 7:25 pm

    Not okay 🙁

  16. Pete Holden on June 21, 2022 at 7:29 pm

You can easily turn off the sensors. Maybe try reading the manual before using the drone, and giving viewers incorrect information based off your failings.

  17. Nekzuris on June 21, 2022 at 7:30 pm

Not tested on the Spark but one the mini 2 you can disable the bottom sensor just by putting a piece of tape on it

  18. Jerry Fierro on June 21, 2022 at 7:30 pm

Switch it to sport mode it will shut off all sensors

  19. Arsehoole Huemon on June 21, 2022 at 7:31 pm

So… fun facts: Clouds are made of LOTS of water. Radio signals (especially higher frequencies) do not travel through water very well. Drones run on radio transmissions.

Not sure if it’s the brightest idea to be under a drone with a fully drained battery.

  24. Joaquin Mateo on June 21, 2022 at 7:34 pm

Great information great video great photography amazing photography Great educational purpose in this video great way to make drones better Great accent subscribed!!

  25. UnderO87 on June 21, 2022 at 7:34 pm

For experiments sake someone should try putting it in sports mode and then while holding the joystick down to decend move the drone around until it low enough to land safely.

  26. peter Russell on June 21, 2022 at 7:35 pm

Point being have atleast 10 minutes left to land. Thanks mate

  27. Ziminar Blaze on June 21, 2022 at 7:35 pm

You can disable all sensors in the app I thought. I can do it with my Mavic 2 pro

  28. sirtubemaster on June 21, 2022 at 7:35 pm

I guess you got lucky! I was going into this video thinking it didn’t come down below at all! can you imagine?? LOL

  29. Sue Taylor on June 21, 2022 at 7:36 pm

Wait a sec, so what happened again? I ain’t rewinding it!

  30. Joey Considine on June 21, 2022 at 7:37 pm

Doesn’t happen anymore. And u could turn off sensors now

  31. Random Cat on June 21, 2022 at 7:37 pm

high speed air should have cleared the fog from underneath the drone !

  32. M1.fatso677 on June 21, 2022 at 7:37 pm

This is why most modern drones have some sort of ultrasound sensor to combat this

  33. Ruby on June 21, 2022 at 7:40 pm

So much buildup just to say nothing happened

  36. Crazy Crow on June 21, 2022 at 7:46 pm

Another good reason to get a drone without all those sensors. You’ll learn to fly yourself and not to depend on all those gimicks that can get you in trouble when you don’t expect it. All of my drones and planes have the ability to go to full manual mode in case something happens so I can take full control at any time and take it to safety.

  37. BR on June 21, 2022 at 7:47 pm

I had the same issue with the mini2, when trying to go down over clouds it "thought" it was the ground and started the landing procedure !!!

  38. Ted . on June 21, 2022 at 7:50 pm

yeah never fly that high or you’ll hit the dome hahaha

  39. Ferdi Louw on June 21, 2022 at 7:53 pm

I had the opportunity last month to fly up thru the fog with my DJI Mini Air 2. The scariest was to see how iced-up the rotors were when it landed safely. I did get warnings that I didn’t understand. One was complaining about downward vision. I used the landing light to see it through the thin fog when coming in for landing.

  40. Charlie Angkor on June 21, 2022 at 7:53 pm

So the sensors are not so amazing.

  41. Regan j Regan on June 21, 2022 at 7:53 pm

Brilliant. I’d never thought of this before. Now I know and am aware. Thanks for sharing.

    Awesome video

  43. jibba02 on June 21, 2022 at 7:56 pm

Why not just fly forward and descend at the same time.

  44. Gilang Nyonyo on June 21, 2022 at 7:58 pm

Did your sister got a YouTube channel?

  45. Lorne Serpa on June 21, 2022 at 7:59 pm

I took my Mavic above the fog also, but did not experience the landing issues you did. It was soooo cool to get the footage like you did.

  46. Slacker Cast on June 21, 2022 at 7:59 pm

Duct tape over those bottom sensors. Problem solved.

  47. Ness on June 21, 2022 at 8:00 pm

Had the same thing happen to my spark when I flew it in a foggy day. Took about a tall tree height fall to the grass but still worked no problem after that

  48. khaledhafiz on June 21, 2022 at 8:01 pm

Thanks. I have never thought that FOG can be the reason to lose my drone. I was aiming to fly my drone up to 470 meters. Now, I am really concerned
