What if DJI won’t let you take off EVEN WHEN YOU GET AUTHORIZATION?

  2. Jim K on February 28, 2021 at 11:43 pm

Question. I just bought a DJI mini 2. A friend thought he was getting Lannc approval when he applied to unlock a geo zone in the DJI fly app. I said I don’t think so. So to be clear, we need FAA approval through KH or AM correct? That means DJI has decided to creat a cluster on their own and force us through hoops we don’t need to jump through in that we also need their approval in app before the thing will fly?
    Thanks for your videos, Jim

  3. Frank Morales III on February 28, 2021 at 11:45 pm

I have noticed that without approval my Mavic Mini will not even start. I have also noticed there are areas that I fly where the drone starts up and flies with out any approval what so ever.

  4. Peter Anderson on February 28, 2021 at 11:45 pm

Is LAANC only for restricted fly zones?

  5. steve patterson on February 28, 2021 at 11:47 pm

im a law biding person and I live on 4 acres , I will tell you no one will tell me I can’t fly on my own property im nowhere near a airport or school

Great job at explaining authorization process. Love this channel! Very helpful!

Why do you seem so familiar?

  8. Noel Najera on February 28, 2021 at 11:52 pm

Excellent tutorials and explanations. I have my Part 107 license for work in my job as a homeowners insurance adjuster. I also enjoy my recreational time for personal drone use and fixed wing hobby aircraft. I am a proponent of enjoying this great hobby and doing things right so that others are safe and respect ‘the rules of engagement’.

Help needed!! First off I love your channel and all the information. What am I doing wrong? I downloaded Kittyhawk and AirMap. I followed your instructions on the video but I cannot get authorization to fly ANYWHERE I click on in Texas. Over people-NO Commercial-NO. BELOW 100 ft. On both APs it keeps saying LAANCE authorization not allowed in controlled airspace 7 days a week 24 hrs a day. I have tried clicking all over Texas in over 100 locations….. same message. What am I doing wrong? My email is.

I have a DJI Mini 2 ( just got it at Christmas) I’m totally trying to do the right thing.

Do you still need DJI/flysafe after using airmap?

  11. Andres Castrillon on February 28, 2021 at 11:53 pm

Love the channel. Any suggestions on a good case for the mini 2 where I can also put the iPad and mini on the same case ?

  12. A. P. on February 28, 2021 at 11:54 pm

I follow your channel for long and always find some helpful information. Thanks for encouragement. I just purchased one and LIKE to fly but SCARE to fly. So many rules. There is on youtuber I ended up by mistake and make me scare to fly. That channel has more scary and negative content then positive.

  13. Hendricks Family on February 28, 2021 at 11:55 pm

This is much appreciated. I realize it’s a year old but what you described at the beginning really encapsulates why I haven’t been droning as much. I’ve had KH & Airmap for a while but haven’t gotten into them. Well I guess I need to step it up. Thanks for the descriptions and advice.

I’m a Commercial Pilot, and Certified Flight Instructor in the Phoenix Valley of the Sun. Recently I obtained my Part 107 Drone Operator Certificate so I can teach future Drone Pilots. I find videos like this very informative. I will be recommending you and your videos to my students.

Wow… Very impressed with all the info you provided. Just got my first drone and I had NO idea about all the requirements. Thank you!!!

  16. Mark Taylor on February 28, 2021 at 11:56 pm

Would you recommend a skin for drone in a high visibility color like the road crews use in their safety vests either orange or yellow? Or a strobe attachment? What brands would you recommend? I am a new owner of a MAVIC Platinum and want to film the local parks and areas around. My home town.

  17. Frank M on February 28, 2021 at 11:57 pm

Hey, wondering if any fool can do search and rescue? I’m Part 107 and I keep hearing about all these people who establish their own SAR service and seems like it’s fraught with issues (like interfering with authorities)!

  18. Miichael Hickey on February 28, 2021 at 11:58 pm

Russ just a quick question. I think I heard you say that you LAANC all your flights. Is this something that we should all do for proof to the FAA that we are responsible pilots? Even if we are in OPEN air space. I have made a pre-flight checklist that I will start using for all future flights. BTW thanks for all the great info on your channel. I have used others but prefer yours. I am flying, well starting, to fly a Mavic Air 2.

  19. FLETCHER METCHER on February 28, 2021 at 11:58 pm

Thanks for the videos ! Quick question Flying over people vs people in the shot? For example at the beach, flying over the the sand 100+ feet above ground level, avoiding flying over people but they are still visible in the shot… thanks

  20. Bob Rosso on February 28, 2021 at 11:59 pm

please…the godam government doesn’t need to know where and where people fly their aircraft. This ain’t RUSSIA. How about taking some of that money and building shelters for homless VETERANS, and see to it they get the CARE THEY NEED.

  21. asic4you on March 1, 2021 at 12:03 am

Good tutorial. I have a new DJI mini 2. I have a question about LAANC approval for altitude. I have an area that has hills and a sea of trees about 150 feet tall. How does the 100 foot apply in this situation?

  22. Magara Rivera on March 1, 2021 at 12:03 am

Hi Russ I’m new at this and I basically because all the information you bring to us is so rich and motivating. I hot a dji mini 2. And my question is: as this does not require to register can i still ask permission to fly in restricted areas as a hobbyist? Thanks again

  23. Tim Montano on March 1, 2021 at 12:04 am

"Will you be flying over people?" Does this mean deliberately flying over people like deliberately video recording some kind of sporting event, family event or, (because a flying drone is generally over the heads of any human who happens to be in the area; not necessarily directly underneath the drone in flight) does it mean that the area has to be completely devoid of human life other than the pilot?

I’ve seen drone videos that record people who happen to be walking or sitting or riding off to a near distance. In these cases are those people looked at by the FAA as flying over people?

If a pilot had selected the "YES" icon where it asked if insurance was wanted, would there have been more of a likely hood that they would be cleared for that particular flight?

I’ve been putting off buying a camera drone ever since I started hearing about this rule or that rule. I’ve also noticed that any time the government puts their hand into anything no matter how well intentioned it generally goes to hell pretty quickly. I still want to purchase and fly a drone but the more they pile onto this list of rules, the more of a deal killer it becomes.

  24. George S on March 1, 2021 at 12:05 am

Thanks, Russ. Awesome information! I’m thinking about taking the plunge into flying a drone but must admit am a little intimated by all the rules. FAA rules, got it. State rules, got it. But local laws and restrictions, e.g., parks, etc., how can I know for sure I can go to a nearby park with a lot of open space and fly a drone within the confines of the par? I read that such a park must have an area designated specifically for such use. Is it enough to say I will only fly if no people around and if people show up I will land the drone? How can I know for sure if where I’m headed will be okay to fly? Will LAANC give me authorization if I’m in a place that is okay with the FAA but the city doesn’t allow drone use? Help!

  25. LaVell Smith on March 1, 2021 at 12:11 am

4:08 is when the information begins. Skip the BS and thank me later.

  26. David Sweet on March 1, 2021 at 12:12 am

The FAA sent me a e-mail that i needed to reregister when I went online their sight was easy to fill out until I got to the question where it asked memoir longitude and latitude. If i only wanted to register for the US what do I put Down? I am just a recreational flyer. Do I have to be reregistered to use Kittyhawk app?

  29. J Myers on March 1, 2021 at 12:15 am

When I make a request, the approval I get in the text is for 6 or more hours later. So, say I send in the request at 10am for a flight time of 11am, the approval comes back allowing for a 4pm flight. Any reason for this? Should I schedule 2 hours out instead of one?

  30. GeezerPleasers on March 1, 2021 at 12:15 am

Given that Airmap has now suggested that local governments implement taxes and take off and landing fees for drones, I think the answer to your question is clear. Delete Airmap and use Kittyhawk.

  31. Jose zavala on March 1, 2021 at 12:15 am

So do you only need to do this if you’re located in a spot that’s blue or orange on the map? Or do you have to do this no matter where you are located?

  32. Sam Ting on March 1, 2021 at 12:15 am

Hi. I’ve used Kittyhawk to get approval to fly. A little later I get a text with a number confirming my approval. I start up my drone, ready to fly, but I still can’t fly because my drone says I still am in unauthorized air space, even though I got the approval right there where I was standing. My question is: How do I coordinate the LAANC approval to DJI?

  33. Mark Eckelkamp on March 1, 2021 at 12:19 am

Wow, I DL the B4UFLY app today. Wow. No flying anywhere around where I live. We have a smaller Airport 3 Miles South of me an Army Base 1 mile West & Air Force Base 4 miles North.

Thank you so much for all the important information you share. Your time and efforts are highly appreciated.

  35. bwoo404 on March 1, 2021 at 12:23 am

Really appreciate your explanation of FAA rules and these helpful apps for flying in restricted airspace. I’ve had a drone for 2 years now but haven’t flown much due to not knowing ALL the FAA rules and changes. Thank you for these brief but informative videos. Some other channels "drone" on about miscellaneous BS before getting to the main topic. I don’t have time to listen for an hour to get the 3 minutes of information I need to fly. So thanks for being concise and informative. Keep up the channel.

  36. joeashbubemma on March 1, 2021 at 12:23 am

Boy you NAILED it. Government f888s everything it touches. I couldn’t even get a proper link to the B4UFLY app from the FAA page.

  37. scott werden on March 1, 2021 at 12:24 am

What the difference between Kittyhawk and what is on the FAA DroneZone website? I can ask for authorization there and it is free although I did have to register the drone, which cost $5. You can also apply for a waiver there to fly in restricted zones, or so they say.

  38. Corky Gainsford on March 1, 2021 at 12:25 am

Usually how long after you submit your request will you get an answer?

  40. umair shakeel on March 1, 2021 at 12:26 am

hey i live about 5 minutes from the dc area and im in the restricted zone. If i get a part 107 license will i be able to fly?

  41. Bradley Harrington on March 1, 2021 at 12:27 am

Question do I still need to do this if I have a drone like my mavic air 2 that when around airports will prompt u to get authorization when u take off ?

  42. Leon Fontaine on March 1, 2021 at 12:27 am

I am Canadian and will be flying a Mini 2 on the island of Oahu. Are there any other steps that I need to follow regarding flights and LAANC

  43. Richard Shifferd on March 1, 2021 at 12:28 am

Kitty hawk has a button to link to DJI, can you explain what that would mean ?

  44. C Snipes on March 1, 2021 at 12:28 am

I live in a "0" (AirMap) zone since my home is within the controlled airspace of my metropolitan airport. Is it possible to get an FAA waiver for INDOOR flight e.g., 0ft AGL so that I can fly inside my home?

  45. HyddenWell Farms on March 1, 2021 at 12:30 am

So if I fly my drone on my farm, I still
    Need Laanc?

  46. Colt45d on March 1, 2021 at 12:33 am

Sorry if you covered this but after downloading the kittyhawk app says "LAANC is not available for flights outside of controlled airspace". So i take it i’m exempt from needing and can enjoy my "toy" on the farm without being harassed? Thanks for the great content you’re the only person i come to when needing info sorry should say Correct info.

  47. jcastanza on March 1, 2021 at 12:35 am

So wait… is he saying to use Kittyhawk or B4UFly?

  48. David Herrington on March 1, 2021 at 12:36 am

If I plan to fly in class g uncontrolled airspace under 400 ft do I still need to use LAANC? Outside of restrict5ed zones.
