I have always loved the SYMA X5C and it’s big brother the SYMA X8C as inexpensive line-of-sight toy drones. They are well made, can take crashes and are fun to fly. With those things in mind, I decided to try adding a small FPV camera and transmitter to both of these drones to see what they would be like to fly them in FPV or “first person view”. In this video I’ll take you through the parts I used and how I attached the FPV camera, transmitter and battery to the drone to make it work.

The coolest thing about this experiment is that the “camera transmission module” that I made is pretty durable, light weight and could work on any number of other RC toys like a RC car or maybe even a larger RC airplane! The SYMA drone was just the first step! If you have never flown FPV before, trying it on a drone you already know how to fly might be a good way to get started. Based on this experience, I’d say that any larger toy drone would work well as a converted FPV drone – it just needs enough power to lift the transmitter, camera and battery.
