I Got Stopped by a Park Ranger While Flying My Drone (in a LEGAL fly zone!)

Drones and Cops… Don’t make the same mistake I did… I got stopped by a park ranger for flying my drone in the backwoods of the Oregon wilderness. It was also a GO FLY zone, so there was NO flight restrictions from the FAA. Essentially, I was allowed to fly my drone in that area, but watch to see why I was stopped! Cool lessons learned from this experience.

This lady was just upset because it was breaking her privacy. He was way away from that Tower he wasn’t even close by the tower. But I think she was upset more like it was her home you shouldn’t be looking at her. Her response with the scream is classic. What kind of people do they get to do these types of jobs possibly a little bit insane already

  2. Reach41 on September 21, 2021 at 6:54 pm

Your flight was completely legal. However, the safest way to avoid problems is to be sneaky.

  3. James Four Eight on September 21, 2021 at 6:56 pm

That’s irritating, your in nature, they didn’t state any laws broken. They are public paid employees by our tax dollars and it’s not illegal. The ranger was cool but seriously, just because people are irritated by drones doesn’t make it wrong.

  4. Joe Citizen on September 21, 2021 at 6:57 pm

Don’t get a copy of the rules … just believe everything he says.

  5. KRUSER on September 21, 2021 at 6:58 pm

Thanks for watching! Tell me your story of being stopped by law enforcement while flying your drone, if you ever have. I want to hear how it went down!! Hopefully not bad…😬

  6. Sehing Francis on September 21, 2021 at 7:00 pm

Fire the employee and sue her into the dark ages. There are entirely too many of these Karen’s on this planet…. Thin them out. Also far too many men also are vigilantes or Dudley do-rights that are really just pretend to be Hall monitors. Our country is becoming a cesspool.

  7. mike on September 21, 2021 at 7:02 pm

Big government sucks. Governments don’t have unbridled authority to make laws and regulations. They should stick to stopping murderers and thieves.

  8. Srav M on September 21, 2021 at 7:03 pm

I was shocked to see a point in the regulation stating you can’t fly a drone to height from where you can’t see your drone !!

  9. OklahomaBorn1970 on September 21, 2021 at 7:03 pm

Seriously I think she was probably doing something she didn’t want seen.

  10. vmaxfodder on September 21, 2021 at 7:05 pm

it would’ve been great if Karen busted out her drone and started filming you real close ?😂🤣 that’s what I would have done !

  11. Daniel Hew on September 21, 2021 at 7:09 pm

The United States has become a police state with regulation and permits ruining the lives of everyone. Is the United States really a free country with all the licenses and permits required to do many things.

  12. M vSdV on September 21, 2021 at 7:09 pm

Park ranger was a cool dude.

  13. Therese Röthel on September 21, 2021 at 7:11 pm

Good video, that park ranger makes good sense. Stay safe

  14. Phil Ham on September 21, 2021 at 7:11 pm

Only the FAA can regulate where you fly, the park rangers do not have the authority to regulate airspace only the the launch and land zone and that has to be posted on signs at the location

  15. EL EVO on September 21, 2021 at 7:12 pm

Cops are always trying to be in charge of laws they know nothing about, if I was a cop, I wouldn’t even enforce such a stupid rule, unless the person is being unsafe.

No one likes a D**kHead but people hate D**kHead cops even more.

  16. Joe Ronca on September 21, 2021 at 7:12 pm

In Philadelphia I was flying a drone to get aerial video of a mural on a building. Apparently the building next door was a federal building, unbeknownst to me, and turned out to be Joe Biden’s campaign headquarters. So obviously a police officer came over to me right away and said I could fly it on the other side of the street, but couldn’t cross over – or I’d be on federal property. He was very nice about it. I wasn’t in a no-fly zone, as far as I knew, but this makes total sense.

But in your case, it totally sounds like she was just trying to throw some weight around in an otherwise dull job/existence. She’s literally in a fire look-out tower. How exciting can that be? Lol. You took her out of her comfort zone.

  17. Relentless FPV on September 21, 2021 at 7:17 pm

That park ranger didn’t have a clue what he was talking about. Why do you think he did not quote the law for you? Because there was none. As long as it was not a national forest or a national park you had every right to fly there.

  18. Nez meister on September 21, 2021 at 7:18 pm

These public servants have no right to privacy as federal employees. What a joke.

  19. Humus Humus on September 21, 2021 at 7:18 pm

Ban drones in all wilderness or slightly wild areas completely, create very restricted zones where they are legal, make the zones visible trough a map application. Nature is not you playground children!

  20. jaxxone on September 21, 2021 at 7:18 pm

    Comfort zone? Wtf 🤣🤣

  21. Tommy G on September 21, 2021 at 7:19 pm

It’s all about Karen Kontrol….whatever. Ridiculous. You’re a nice guy. I would have said, “what federal building?” It’s a tower.

  22. Terryharleyrides on September 21, 2021 at 7:19 pm

The girl ranger was nothing but a big baby looking for someone to hurt, she obviously hates her job! I wonder what she does when birds fly by?????

  23. BS fishing on September 21, 2021 at 7:21 pm

Yeah you can’t fly around US property when it comes to the government

  24. Chris Church on September 21, 2021 at 7:21 pm

They just make the rules up as they go

  25. Chewie 13 on September 21, 2021 at 7:21 pm

No flying over fires, but there was no fires. Man, thanks for sharing. I know it’s going to happen to me someday.

  26. Pulsar Tech on September 21, 2021 at 7:25 pm

I mean what kinda of park though? National Parks have been a no fly zone since like ‘14
Public and state parks can make up there own rules..
I’m just curious, not trying to start anything.

  27. abc gede on September 21, 2021 at 7:25 pm

The officer just commanded by his commander, they don’t know the true reasons. The thingis everynational park containt alot of petrified very rare animal mudfossil , mostly dragon Things that the elites will be kept by them self.. you can check it from googlemap!!

  28. Dan Nobles on September 21, 2021 at 7:29 pm

In the case of Oregon in the area he was in (at this time) is a fly zone as far as I know. But for those of you thinking the FAA regulations protect you because you are in FAA airspace, you might want to check your local state laws on drones. I just researched mine and in Florida, I cannot legally fly my drone in state parks or managed areas and forests. A managed forest area that I’ve been going to for years was exactly where I was hoping to fly my drone – nope. Btw – in Oregon property owners can possibly bring action against you if you fly your drone below 400 feet – which is interesting since you are generally not allowed to fly over 400 feet due to FAA regulation. So, in essence, they are basically saying you cannot fly over anyone’s private property in Oregon. I bet that will come as a shock to many Oregon drone flyers. You can find this info on a site called UAV coach.

  29. William Hughes on September 21, 2021 at 7:30 pm

As far as I know, thise is class g airspace and is unregulated. Its not even class e and even if it was only e2 would need auth. All in all, he lied, had no right to stop you. There was no open air assembly of people by faa classification and there was no repetitive movement over persons or circles over persons. Also faa classification of persons in a shelter is acceptable for even category 3 drone use so no… he is full of crap and his lady in the tower is a tyrant. This stop by this man was to make the crazy lady in the tower happy, but it was illegal of him to do. Get your 107 faa certification and become a commercial drone pilot if you want to know how wrong they were.

  32. Steve -O on September 21, 2021 at 7:31 pm

Thank you for posting. Had lots of run ins with the law and security officers. Security always just tells me "Private property, can’t fly here, beat it!" but in a nice way usually. I had a police officer sneak up on me while I was flying with my goggles on. He wanted to know all about it and said he flew the drone for the police department in that area, totally nice and never a negative word, I was flying in an area where there are no people. I had a park ranger kick me out of and area where I was flying along the dam of a lake near my house. I was actually on the property and had passed signs saying do not enter. Ranger said I was not allowed to fly over the dam for "security reasons". I packed up and left… all good.

  33. Chris Carlson on September 21, 2021 at 7:32 pm

Federal parks and "Wilderness" areas are prohibited areas. Many state parks prohibit drones as well. If the officer had said any one of those points, they would have been pertinant. Maybe he was letting you off easy for flying in a prohibited area (but I cant tell). Otherwise, the idea that you distracted an employee…or came close to a federal building… that sounds like an over reaction to me. Maybe it was a nice way of saying… just do it where we can’t see you, and we don’t really care, even though it’s prohibited here.

  34. dmcgreg on September 21, 2021 at 7:34 pm

The takeaway for me is this….come armed with the knowledge, pertinent regulations, and the cool head to (tactfully) tell them to piss off.

They are law enforcement….not the arbiters of the law.

  35. David Ellis on September 21, 2021 at 7:34 pm

That ranger seemed a nice chap, but ken heron’s run in with a couple of annoying security men in the past. Some people like drones some don’t, that’s just the way society is. I won’t have a bad word said against them, I think the technology’s fantastic and getting better. They have saved peoples lives, sadly they’ve also took them. Theres always pluses and minuses to technology. I wish it wasn’t so, but there’s nothing any of us can do about it.

  36. Mask Rider#1 on September 21, 2021 at 7:36 pm

I wondered what would the white will do if he was a black guy for flying a drone in that area.

  37. Cameron Little on September 21, 2021 at 7:36 pm

That ranger was throwing out all kinds of "official" sounding words but most of it was BS. Yes, you can’t fly it over anyone and you were over 400 feet in some of those shots. The rest of it you were fine.

  38. Wes G on September 21, 2021 at 7:38 pm

In Massachusetts, it’s illegal to fly a drone in any state forest. But then, everything is illegal in Massachusetts.

  39. JacksMagicBean on September 21, 2021 at 7:40 pm

This is why I always hide when flying. Even if it’s legal, some idiot ranger or cop will try to bother you if they don’t know the law (or just wanna be an asshole)

I flew my drone around pt Vicente lighthouse in California. Was stopped by 3 cop cars and 5 cops total. Felt like I was about to go to jail. Apparently not only is the lighthouse an active military base for landing helicopters but the surrounding area is a mating zone for falcons. Was told if I flew again they would impose the maximum fine of $350k and I would lose my FAA status permanently. No idea if it was true but I never did it again.

  43. YooperFPV on September 21, 2021 at 7:44 pm

Cant give you a ticket if its not illegal. You cant fly close to prisons or jails. If in all possible I wouldn’t fly directly over a occupied building. You can fly 3 inches to the side of the building and be legal.

  44. Jose Antonio Avila on September 21, 2021 at 7:45 pm

To be fair they are super loud. And honestly I doubt you had line of sight on your drone. You should fly right man… that’s why people shit on drone operators.

  49. Mario Williams on September 21, 2021 at 7:52 pm

Is this place a national park? I know those are a no go. I’m a new drone pilot and Iive in New York City. Currently, you can’t fly ANYWHERE in the city, so I’m trying to scout out places outside of New York to start flying. But at least the ranger was cool with you.
