I Flew in a National Park (And This Happened!)

I flew in a national park with my drone and I got fined! Watch as I call the park ranger that issued the fine and I try to get answers.

Here is the video: https://youtu.be/r3p1hFSb_8A
A couple years ago I flew my phantom standard 3 in the Mojave National Preserve in California at Zzyzx Road. After editing and sharing the video, a year later I got an envelope with a fine in it sent to me in the mail from that national preserve. I mistakenly didn’t check to see if I was flying my drone in a national park when I made that video and I had to pay the consequences.

Have you ever experienced something like this before? OR what’re your thoughts on this?

  2. Robert Taylor on December 13, 2020 at 9:50 pm

Sorry you’re totally wrong you cannot take off with your drone from outside the park and fly into it I know someone personally who has gotten $1,000 fine for that
And that’s why he said he was legal but he was not so you told the public the wrong information

  3. yackawaytube on December 13, 2020 at 9:51 pm

Bad advice about lying to the cops where you took off. Never lie to the cops, because that alone is a crime. You have the right to remain silence, but not the right to lie

  4. Chris Ward on December 13, 2020 at 9:53 pm

That’s for sharing this. I’m new to this so my question is WHY do they make it illegal?

  5. Sam C on December 13, 2020 at 9:57 pm

    Renegade !! Hahaha nice footage

  6. Ferdinando Bernasconi on December 13, 2020 at 9:59 pm

To make a long story short, she has nil idea about your specific situation nor on the legal matter which pertains to such cases.
Once you add on the description, that you cannot operate inside the boundary of the preserve and you have been fined for doing so, nobody can tell you anything.
youtube is full of videos showing people breaking the law.

Thanks for sharing your experience, this is super helpful for new drone pilots! Crazy..I’ve driven past that road probably 50 times but never actually checked out whats down there. Good stuff 👍

Some ways I can think of how they found you are; a possible glimpse of your license plate in another one of your videos, an aerial shot of you taking off from your house (you may have mentioned your location) or facial recognition through the DMV database. I have not watched your videos so I’m just speculating here.

Damn invasion of privacy is what it is.

  10. Bob Wortman on December 13, 2020 at 10:13 pm

Keep in mind that you must maintain a minimum altitude of 2,000 feet above the surface of lands and waters of U.S. Forest Service Wilderness area per FAA rules.

What a waste of my time. I learned absolutely nothing. 11 minutes of my life wasted.

It’s interesting for me to hear some thing about Zzyzx after all these years. When I was a kid, late 1950 or early 1960s, my grandparents took my family out to Zzyzx and all I remember is learning it was a health spa or something like that I think my grandmother bought some of their vitamins or supplements. I don’t remember going into any Hot Springs but I’m thinking it was known for that.

Probably found you through your IP address associated with uploading the video. And from there went to the internet provider to get the customer information.

  14. Jim Collins on December 13, 2020 at 10:22 pm

Great information. The self gloss got you busted. haha. Interesting information.

  15. JKDrift on December 13, 2020 at 10:24 pm

Such stupid rules…Like what’s the difference where you operate? Oh no, you’re a criminal – you took off 30 centimetres inside the zone….

  16. Lance Albon on December 13, 2020 at 10:24 pm

Under the Fifth Amendment, an individual cannot be tried twice for the same crime. This means that if you went to trial and were acquitted, the prosecution can’t try the same case against you again. It also means that you can’t be punished twice for the same crime.

  17. arlo4823 on December 13, 2020 at 10:26 pm

Thanks for sharing your story. Almost drove out there myself just to fly.

  18. Champs Visions 3D on December 13, 2020 at 10:27 pm

not criminal because no one was hurt but it was illigal. and you broke a rule witch was punishable by a find. Dont use the word criminal until some one is being hurt.

  19. Creative Mofoo on December 13, 2020 at 10:27 pm

You’ve already paid the ticket. They can’t give you another for the same incident.

  20. Alien Drones on December 13, 2020 at 10:27 pm

A year and a half later, that’s interesting. I think that if there is a criminal investigation, any business can be compelled to give up your personal information and will likely do so without any hesitation. Lesson learned I guess, could have been a lot more expensive, though for that dust bowl of a national park they should have paid you a royalty for posting a video of it instead of a fine. Good Flying!

  21. Andrew Ydna DuBuc on December 13, 2020 at 10:31 pm

huh I wonder about that "posting video of a criminal act" stuff. I would think that it’s more of an issue of avoiding further hassle in the future.

  22. Boyd River on December 13, 2020 at 10:32 pm

Bad luck. A simple request for your ISP though YT got your details, but why would not taking it down get you another citation? They know you’ve been dealt with and have a record. That’s a little like saying you were filmed doing a robbery, went to prison for the crime, came out and the video was shown again on TV so they send you back to prison! Surely even in the USA you can’t be convicted of the same crime twice? Also, were you really cited for a misdemeanour 17 months after you committed it? Isn’t there some sort of statute of limitations on misdemeanours? I hope you did not get caught by a speed camera back then or another tickets on its way!

  23. Stoneburner Drone Service on December 13, 2020 at 10:40 pm

I would go back there and fly again, this time just outside the boundary. 😁

  24. DroneXL on December 13, 2020 at 10:41 pm

    Good video! Thanks for sharing.

    How much is the fine?

  27. Ray Kelly on December 13, 2020 at 10:46 pm

Interesting. Sorry you received a ticket as you are a responsible drone pilot.
