How to Register Your Drone with the FAA

How to Register Your Drone with the FAA

*** see notes for new information as of May 2021

In this video, we’ll walk through how to register your drone with the FAA for $5 and what to do if you’re registering recreationally vs. commercially, what to do if you’re registering a drone on behalf of your company, and more.

*** From Kevin at the FAA — “The FAA DroneZone portal has been updated to incorporate Remote ID information. The update requires a registrant to indicate if their drone is Remote ID equipped or not. Currently, there are NO drones that are equipped with Remote ID. Although there are blogs and other sources which may claim differently, the FAA has not approved any Means of Compliance (MOC) for Remote ID at this time. If a registrant selects ‘Yes’ to the Remote ID equipped question, they will be required to enter additional information, including a serial number. The serial number needed is NOT the drone’s serial number, rather, it’s the Remote ID serial number (which doesn’t exist). Entering the drone’s serial number will not be accepted and not allow the drone to be registered.” ***

Do I need a license to pilot a drone commercially?

  4. Kashif Khan on August 29, 2022 at 8:29 pm

I think you need to make an updated part 2 to this video as when I checked today, the recreational registration also needs the drone information serial number, etc.
it is also asking me if I had the remote-id capability … which I have to look up and figure out.
Great video .. please if possible do this update so it can help people like me who are newbies.

  5. Craig Lawrey on August 29, 2022 at 8:29 pm

Serious question, since my drone is under 249g, it says I don’t have to register with the FAA, because I am a recreational flyer, BUT without registering….. Can I still use LAANC?

  6. dannyg40 on August 29, 2022 at 8:29 pm

I’m a little confused and hope you can clear it up.
I want to get the Dji Mini 2 but a little worried and want to get a few things clear if you can.
It’s under the 250g registration requirement and I would be flying it for recreation.

I ran across a video of someone that had one, posted videos to youtube, and because he had ads on his channel, he said he got in trouble with the FAA because even though he was only making a small amount of money, it was still considered "Commerical Use" and considered it "being used for a business for making money".
If I have a youtube channel, show drone footage but no ads on that video, but ads on other videos I have without the drone, will the FAA have a problem with that ?

If say I decide to get a bigger drone, or register my drone just to be safe even if it’s under 250g, and register it "I fly under part 107 or as a public aircraft" it say’s " … apply for a waiver/authorization under part 107 … "
If you register the drone under that, do you have to take the part 107 testing ?

Thank you for the helpful vid. Could I ask if there are no way to proceed this registration by foreign people? I’m a Japanese and considering to fly drones in the US.

  8. cayminlast on August 29, 2022 at 8:35 pm

Their website says drones under the 250 grams weight and flown for recreation only, are not required to be registered, then it states "Drones of any size need to be registered", so which is it?
All of my model aircraft and drones weigh less than 40 grams and none of them has any kind of camera, very confusing indeed.

  15. carlos aguirre on August 29, 2022 at 8:42 pm

Just someFYI, Things must have changed since you made this video, because i attempted to register my Drone and following the "Safty Guidance" tab is now a "Inventory" tab along with a "Add Device" tab requesting the dornes info and Remot ID, before one can proceed to the payment tab.

  16. Bertell Moore on August 29, 2022 at 8:43 pm

I have a question I have already registered with the FAA for one drone I bought another one do I have to re-register or do I use the same numbers

  19. Charlie Agee on August 29, 2022 at 8:47 pm

What kind of drone are you using? I am asking simply because I want to follow your courses and I believe that your drone is a great fit for what I’m attempting to accomplish with this path. Please let me know! Thanks so much!

I’m building an FPV drone myself, but the registration asks for manufacturer and model? What should I put here?

  23. Erin Phillips on August 29, 2022 at 8:54 pm

I registered through flylegit. Does that mean my drone isn’t registered? I received a card and decals.

  24. BudgieWoods on August 29, 2022 at 8:54 pm

If I have a DJI FPV Drone do I need to register that to the FAA? Thanks!

I tried to register my mavix air 2 recreational and it wanted me to add a device. When I put the s/n in it said invalid number.??? Also I’m not sure if this device is equipped with remote identification capability…

  26. Levent Kucuk on August 29, 2022 at 8:57 pm

If I’m shooting a short film and I want to use a drone for landscape shots, would that count as recreational or commercial? From my understanding, it would only be commercial if I intended to make a profit off of the film.

Quick question. Can I fly over active crime scenes?

  29. Hal Hurlbut on August 29, 2022 at 9:01 pm

Do you need to register each drone separately or can you use the same registration # on multiple drones?

  30. Scott from Syracuse on August 29, 2022 at 9:04 pm

I registered my Holy Stone HS720E since it weighed more than 250 grams. I just purchased a new drone that weighs under 249 grams. I was thinking of adding landing gear to my new drone which would make the drone weigh more than 250 grams. If I list my new done on DroneZone website, can I use the same FAA registration number for my new drone?

  31. Gino Tarabotto on August 29, 2022 at 9:04 pm

Superb tutorial. Is there a test to take, and is there any extra registration requirements depending on the US state you are in?

  32. Sara Twiss on August 29, 2022 at 9:06 pm

Thank you for this informative step-by-step video. Quick question, I registered my drone under Part 107 in my own name, since I will be using it both recreationally and commercially. If in the future I do want to create my own freelance business with my drone, will I need to select Add User, and proceed with my business name under the Part 107 Administrator role? Is this Add User tab mostly for others who are going to be flying my drone either recreationally or commercially? Appreciate your time!

  33. Big Jay on August 29, 2022 at 9:08 pm

UAV coach, I just bought my first drone, the mini 2. Obviously I’m hooked. So, I’m planning on getting the mavic 3 soon. Just recreational for now. I understand I will need to register the mavic 3 however, there is so much information and talk about remote ID and I don’t want any part of that. Has anything changed that will force me to do anything else other than just registering the mavic 3 ?

YouTube YouTube YouTube, why no one touches the most wanted subject? I want to upload videos to YouTube, what registration do one need i.e. for monetized channels and non-monetized channels. What registration, please – Do you need to sit in the exam before registering as commercial?

  39. Kickin Asphalt on August 29, 2022 at 9:14 pm

So I shouldn’t have to register my mavic mini 2 if I will just be using it recreationally?

  40. Ya Faraj Allah 💚 on August 29, 2022 at 9:16 pm

I heard you need a test for part 107 license but you didn’t do a test and I heard it costs 175$ to fly commercial but you said to register it only cost 5$ I don’t understand do you need to register the drone and get license or do you get a license when you register a drone I don’t understand

  41. Lu Noncent on August 29, 2022 at 9:16 pm

One question, can I still use FAA TO REGISTER IN trinidad and Tobago?

  44. Favroite Tiger on August 29, 2022 at 9:19 pm

I have a quick question. I just bought the dji mavic 3. I was curious does it support the remote ID that will be required in the United States. Second if not will it be updated with firmware to support remote Id. Or will I need to get another drone.

Hi, great vid, the messaging was concise and informative on how to register your drone. My question is related to drone registration, specifically on international UAS operators. I’ll be visiting my brother who resides in the US and I’d like to fly my drone while I’m there. My drone under 55lbs and is registered in my home country of Trinidad & Tobago 🇹🇹 and while I’m in the US, I’d like to have it registered, how can that be done?!??
