How to LEGALLY fly your drone in PORTUGAL – Process for AUTHORIZATION
The Drone I use: https://amzn.to/2LEfVVB
Hopefully, this video will help you to fly your drone legally in Portugal. The process for authorization is pretty straight forward. It is just one of those necessary evils I guess.

Thanks for this video man!
so, how much did it cost (total)? are there locations without any license?
I have been online at the page https://www.aan.pt/unidade-AAN and it seems the system has changed and unless I amstaken, we need to go to https://www.aan.pt/subPagina-AAN-001.005.005-unmanned-aircraft-drones and then we have to register but boy do they want lots of info including your Tax information number !! Have I missed something here as in your very good video, it seemed so easy. We just want to film on the Douro while on holiday. We cannot find your link on the page to aerial images – HELP please Thanks Alan
im portugues my self and was thinking of buying a drone mavic pro and fly it in my city up north of portugal but has you said this is correct you need to ask permission from the marine police they are the ones in charge of the sea and the beaches and to take pics and film you need to do this forms for the airforce this is correct its such headheach and bullshit its not even worth all the troubles stuff that i would not even fly it thailand is much worse .
Excellent job! Thank you for sharing. 👍 ✌
I’m glad that they granted the permission. 🙂
Greetings.
Thank you so much for this man! Really helped out a lot
Thanks for the video
Good day Ronnie. I found you’re vídeo nothing short of informative and extremely helpful for those venturing into this for the first time.
We are traveling for 2 weeks starting in Lisbon and hopefully making our way to Porto then make our way down the east side thru Guarda, until we reach Faro and Lagos. Also Madeira Island.
Simply wondering if there’s a single website where all the “local port captaincy” are listed for Portugal since they all work independently from one another. I tried searching but didn’t find anything so far.
If you have the links for all the places you had to get forms with that would be great also. Thank you so much for all the help.
Superb info…. I live in Spain and just completed my Spanish Advanced RPAS pilots course for Drones so looking forward to getting involved in all the legal tape. Please can you tell me the App that you used in Portugal for Air space controlled uncontrolled etc 👍😎👨✈️
Hey Ronnie this is very informative , Thank you. I have a question for you on your hand held video, i am assuming you are using your phone , are you using a stabilizer and if so, what are you using?
Planning on a trip to Portugal late next month and it seems the links in the aan.pt site are not working anymore. Not sure what is happening as it might be an update of somelind. Are you aware of the broken links? Cheers.
I’m going for a few days and have no idea where I’m going to film or when… I can’t fill in that paper… what are the risks if I don’t do all this?
Great video – keep it coming! How about this for some Algarve Footage https://youtu.be/7OlhtsoOkFM (Mavic Air)
Hi there, i am going to Madeira, and I already check forms but there is so much information, as for example ratio from my gps position; i ve never been there, so i am not sure where to make footages, do you have any advice?
Hey Ronnie. Thanks for posting this. I have a question though. I’m a qualified commercial drone pilot. I have some aerial footage to get of a golf course in Portugal next month (January 2019) I assume the rules are the same, as I’ll be flying on private property with the owners permission?
What do the blue parts mean in the app?
Hey Ronnie… question did u buy a new drone in Portugal or did u bring yours from Abroad…. any issues of deregistration or reregistration?… do you have a pilots
License and if so was it internationally accepted?… again great Video.. Dec 2018 I am here and following your advice
You total legend! Thanks for this! Does this permission also cover UAV operations in Sao Miguel? Or are extra permissions needed?
For how long was this permision valid?
I have paid 5.70€ for entering territory of port to unload cargo in portugal. Wtf
The procedure has changed. I flew in November 2019 and there is a new online form on the eAAN website, which includes coastal permission. It needs to be done weeks ahead, so it’s still a huge hassle. Portugal: the only "civilized" country in the world where spontaneous flight is not possible, even in non-controlled airspace… I’m not surprised so few tourists and locals bother to follow this procedure…
Thanks for this Ronnie. I’m portuguese and have learned more from it then from any portuguese youtuber, jornalist or institucion. Still one doubt: does the permissions have an expiration date? Thank you!
There is a new form online: http://www.aan.pt/subPagina-AAN-001.005.005-unmanned-aircraft-drones
My contry is destroing the hoby to many ruls and they are starting to ask for money, and when they taste a new honey pot it becomes worst and worst
I am heading to Portugal in September, I have tried to download the forms but it redirects me to a broken link. Any idea what I should do?
So I am fine when I take my drone of in Portugal this summer?
For the photo/video part there appears to be an improved process, that will officially replace the old process as of Februari 1, 2019. From what I can tell the implementation is good, with an e-form and clear documentation in both Portuguese and English.

Paying money for the right to fly a drone near the sea? This is simply legalized racketeering. And I thought that Portugal was a civilized country…
Easier to just film it, really. I’m Portuguese. No one will bother you in Portimão but kudos for your patience and good intentions.
Thanks for that mate. Just one question. To sign up for it they ask for NIF number which is their Tax identification number. I don’t have one and don’t know how to finish the application. Anyone can help please?
Adding to all that, ther’s new legislation comming this 2018 (already approved by the government); you’ll have to pay register your drone and have 150€ insurance on it, plus, you need to ask "partimonio nacional" permition to film any monumentes, and "protecão de de dados" if you get people on your videos. so… i sold my drone…
That money they asked you for is kinda weird to be honest
hey bud, heading to lisbon, porto and algrave (around lagos) soon.
from the looks at it some areas are lisbon are doable, as well as porto (Sintra, seems to be off limits). what is the rule with the beaches? if you take off from the beach, or if you fly above?
Helped very much! Thank you!
sou um brasileiro indo pra portugal…
estou seguindo suas orientações pra conseguir minhas autorizações para meu DJI spark….
muita burocracia =/
lindas imagens, grande abraço!!!!
What is an email address to National Maritime Authority please ?
Is this still the case? Do you still need to apply for permission? Apparently they’ve changed everything recently and there’s a new online portal. However I can’t figure out how to get a drone registration number from ANAC.
Does the same laws apply if the drone is under 250 grams??
https://www.uavsystemsinternational.com/drone-laws-by-country/portugal-drone-laws/
Hey mate thanks for the info! I just got to Porto and keen to use my spark I wont be flying over any beaches or in the city at all we have a car and will be driving in land and doing some walks etc just exploring in land. Will I be ok to use my drone? I don’t have time for a license only her for a few days? Obviously I will stick to all the rules, doubt people will be around us. What do you think I do? TIA 🙂
Are you still in Portugal?
Dude I’ve lived in Lisbon for 2 years and moved here from San Diego, I am a filmmaker and I have just been flying with nothing so this is super helpful man! Thank you
The money you payed the port Captain was a license to fly over the ocean, everything is very complicated here… To tell you the truth I fly every day, everywhere I go and I dont have any of my drones licensed… I just try not to fly over people or populated areas, but I’m more into freestyle mini quads so I like flying abandoned buildings and big fields…
Nice video,Do i have to register my drone for personal or hobby use to get permission?
Even to give a party near the ocean we have to pay to maritime Authority in our region.
Is the process.
Awesome footage.
Welcome to Portugal 👏🏼🇵🇹
Really fantastic vid and great advice to what could be very complicated otherwise! Thanks Ronnie. Two questions, is the approval time limited in any way (or is it just silent as to how long you will have that approval to fly for). Going to Portugal in a months’ time and thinking of adding a number of places on the form but possibly shoot some of them later the year when I’m back. And in terms of your address details (do you have to provide address details of where you will be staying or will home address suffice (latter London for me)?
Cheers
Hi Ronnie I recently moved to Portugal as well and been wondering what all is needed to fly thanks for posting this and if you have any great spots let me know thanks.
So what about my non-existent NIF number? This summer l’ll go to Portugal, but can’t even ask for permisson due to this tax number..
First, thank you for you visit. 🙂
Your explanation was really good, it is the first time that I heard an entity asking money in order to provide an approval to fly with a drone. I would say that is really sad.
I think and I hope in a near future the process can be more interactive, like using an app to do all the process in a simple and fastest way.
Thank a lot for sharing the process.
