Gatwick Drone Incident 2018 – Who Flew The Gatwick Airport Drones?

In this video I’m going to talk about the drone incident at Gatwick Airport in December 2018.

On the evening of December 19th 2018 Gatwick Airport’s only runway was closed for safety reasons after a drone was spotted flying over it several times.

Inbound flights were diverted to other airports in the UK or northern Europe while outbound flights were cancelled.

Although the runway was closed the airport itself remained open since no one was really sure when flights would resume.

The runway was re-opened at about 3am the following morning but quickly shut again when the drone reappeared.

After several more sightings the runway remained closed throughout Thursday 20th, during which time the Army was called to assist the Police in their search for the drone pilot.

There was another sighting of the drone at about 10pm on Thursday 20th.

By the morning of Friday December 21st no further sightings had been reported, the runway re-opened, and flights in and out resumed.

There were reports of another sighting on the evening of Friday 21st December and flights were diverted again. But subsequently they resumed and it emerged that Sussex Police had arrested a man and a woman in connection with the “criminal use of drones”. It was said that the Israeli-developed Drone Dome system had been deployed, and that this presumably enabled swift reaction and subsequent arrests. Obviously this caused huge disruption and upset to tens of thousands of passengers and their children.

And inevitably it had a big impact on all those who have a business interest in aviation, not just the airlines but all the ancillary services too.

About 1,000 flights were cancelled or diverted on one of the busiest weeks of the year, affecting 140,000 passengers. While the incident was ongoing there was so much speculation in the press and social media that any facts were hard to find.

Yet, despite all the efforts of the authorities the perpetrator(s) evaded capture and no one was sure who was flying the drone(s) and why.

As the hours passed speculation was rife on social media with people suggesting it was all due to a prank by a teenager and that the drone was the affordable type of Christmas toy that could be bought on any high street.

On a full battery charge these types of drones can stay aloft for 20-30 minutes depending on wind conditions.

But as the hours passed three things became apparent.

First, the drone or drones would disappear and reappear, suggesting it either landed for a battery change or there was more than one drone.

Who are the Gatwick Grinches?

Update – 29th December: Police now say they had 115 sightings (not 67) of which 92 came from ‘credible’ witnesses but some may have seen the police drone sent up to search for the phantom drones. Wreckage of two drones found near airport perimeter ruled out.

There is a lot lot lot more to this, than ‘appears’ obvious, my home overlooks the place, I suggest you ‘ google’ for some of the Crawley based press ( local newspaper reporters), and you are going to need to be able to ‘think’ outside the box,Cobra, military.Phantom & Typhoon fighter jets, etc etc, ‘for a rogue Drone’ and three days,REALLY!

  3. Declan Keogh on October 10, 2020 at 12:09 pm

So much wrong infomation in this video. Yes it is designed to be a hateful propaganda against drones. If this guy knew anything about drones he would know the cheaper drones have terrible flight times. $100 drone your lucky to get 10mins flight time.
    Dji tello $169-14mins flight time
    Dji spark $500-16mins flight time
Dji mavic pro $1000- around 24mins-28mins
Alta 8 upwards of £14500-30mins flight time depending on payload.
And why does he say drone may be detected within 5km of an airport and his fancy graphics say 50km.
Such a bad video from an improperly researched topic. He talks about truth in the video at least get your facts right.

  4. Observer 395-2 West on October 10, 2020 at 12:10 pm

I’ve viewed five videos now, and none of them look like drones. Also, no close-ups are available, and there are no visible propellers on this orb-shaped object.

DJI AeroScope.. Next DJI will come up with an upgraded AeroScope that has Drone Jammer, called AeroSpy, which auto engages RTH on the detected drone 🤔
Beware Big Brother is Watching.. 🙄

The two suspects who were arrested on Friday night have been released without charge.

  9. Redlioness 2019 on October 10, 2020 at 12:13 pm

Now it is blamed on Activists….
NO drones where seen near Gatwick Airport.
I’m guessing this person is suggesting, indirectly that is, that activists are a problem!
Is he suggesting that something should be done to incriminate them even though he has NO PROOF OF ANYTHING?
    Is this inflammatory?
HE NEEDS TO GO BACK INSIDE HIS CAGE BEFORE HE DOES ANY REAL DAMAGE!!!

  10. Mark Stronge on October 10, 2020 at 12:13 pm

Where were the airport fire trucks?? They would have worked just fine… in taking out any drone

  11. Povilas Stankūnas on October 10, 2020 at 12:19 pm

    Very nice and informative!

  12. Tim Hayes on October 10, 2020 at 12:20 pm

I’m sorry, but this sounds like a video meant to inspire fear of drones. In fact, the "perpetrators" who were arrested, on suspicion, had an alibi and could not have been involved. Now the police are saying there may never have been a drone in the first place!
All it took was for someone to say there was a drone!
This is what media hysteria gets you! Everyone is afraid of something to the point that if someone says they saw a drone, everything gets shut down with no corroborative evidence.
I think this video adds to the hysteria without all the facts.
It’s not hard to imagine the next step is to outlaw all drones due to hysteria. Then all the people who own a drone for their hobbies have to suffer due to nothing but fear and hysteria propagated by the media and videos like this one.

  13. Bernhard Hörlezeder on October 10, 2020 at 12:22 pm

wher is the video of the drone???or its not a drone===???

  14. andrew maudsley on October 10, 2020 at 12:25 pm

I must say that this is still not proven to be a drone of any kind but drones are being blamed anyways.. all them people there and no one got a picture or video clearly showing it even had news people there with there big cameras… tbh I feel this was not a drone and only shows how uninformed people are about them and how defenceless airports are… I hope they airports get there finger out of there are now as you have just shown how stupped they are at finding a drone if there was one to start with…

  15. Antek_BTW on October 10, 2020 at 12:30 pm

    it was ally law

  16. Mark Stronge on October 10, 2020 at 12:31 pm

It was Chess Dynamics that developed the drone system, and they’re based in the UK. Only some pro-hamas/Palestine news outlets mentioned "Israeli" AFAIK http://www.chess-dynamics.com/news/airport-protection-ready-to-go/

  17. Algeria Aviator on October 10, 2020 at 12:33 pm

Sorry but there are two runways at Gatwick they are 05R/23L and 05L/23R

  18. Harry the Spider on October 10, 2020 at 12:33 pm

What an absolute crock of crap! Drones are once gain being used as an excuse for failings elsewhere in the system. A great one to blame when everything else goes wrong. No drones, no verified drone sightings, no video. come on we all have camera phones and not one video apart from some stock photography from somewhere. The press are really uncannily very silent now maybe because they know they screwed up. The drone flying community offered assistance to easily remedy this situation but were told there assistance wasn’t needed! We need to wise up.

  19. John Galt on October 10, 2020 at 12:33 pm

Update: No video, no pictures, no radar or electronic emissions recorded. Couple arrested with no probable cause and an airtight alibi. Conclusion: Mass hysteria, plain and simple.

They weren’t arrested "for" the drone offences. They were arrested "in connection with" the drone offences, or for "suspected" (not proven) use of drones.

Plus, the police are still looking for the actual perpetrators, as the police themselves said:

"“We continue to urge the public, passengers and the wider community around Gatwick to be vigilant and support us by contacting us immediately if they believe they have any information that can help us in bringing those responsible to justice.

“The arrests we have made this evening are a result of our determination to keep the public safe from harm, every line of inquiry will remain open to us until we are confident that we have mitigated further threats to the safety of passengers.”

Planting seeds, expect a "government terrorist" attack with drones soon. Probably before brexit….
But most will believe what they are told.

  33. thisisnumber0 on October 10, 2020 at 12:55 pm

I hear the police now say no corroboration of a drone sighting. Cover up by Gatwick Airport for a huge systems failure? No, yes??
What was that little Cessna doing, taking off from Gatwick, flying around erratically to the north west, then landing at Redhill airfield? All on Flightradar24.

  34. Daniele Iannarelli on October 10, 2020 at 12:55 pm

    “Passengers and their children”…???
Does this mean that the children aren’t considered passengers?

  36. Ben Lovegrove on October 10, 2020 at 12:56 pm

According to a Yahoo post, Gatwick deployed a counter drone system called Skyperion, a Metis Aerospace product, as well as the Falcon Shield counter-drone system developed by Leonardo, and a drone jamming system.

  40. Rob Ward on October 10, 2020 at 1:02 pm

How would you be able to land and re battery a drone multiple times without many people seeing in a high population area like Gatwick,

  41. Evilroco on October 10, 2020 at 1:03 pm

It;s lucky that Gatwick managed to use "down time" to fix faulty Air Traffic control software/systems and avoid millions in fines ,
And despite thousands of observers NOT A SINGLE CONFIRMED SIGHTING of a drone.

  42. Infinity Searcher on October 10, 2020 at 1:03 pm
