Flying a Drone at Night? You Need to Have This!

Flying a Drone at Night? You Need to Have This!

To be legal when flying a drone at night, you must have an anti-collision strobe light on it. This video compares two of the most popular moveable strobes, the LumeCube Strobe and the budget-friendly Ulanzi DR-01. Spoiler alert – skip the Ulanzi. It’s budget for a reason!

250 or 251gr… who cares …. Scrap some 1gr plastic off the body for those difficult people, better to be more visible!

Hi, I have multiple Firehouse strobes on my MA2. White Red, Green so I have VLOS at all times and know which way it is moving. I like the Strobe/Pulse mode to see easier during the daylight hours. I want some sunset afterglow photos from an altitude over the lake with mountains in the background. the purple glow under the clouds is amazing on the ground or in the air.

  6. M O on July 23, 2021 at 9:01 pm

To snoop into hotel room windows! Maybe a strobe is a bad idea for that?

The jagged song coincidently stay because glider diagnostically slow lest a useless cabinet. thoughtful, aberrant china

You must be able to set those scales to grams.

I probably do more night flying than I do in the day. I have 4 batteries and go through them twice a day, at about 25 minutes a flight. Night flying? Since I can’t get a Drone that I can use googles, there are less distractions at night, and I can haul ass like a bat. I’m in an Aircraft Restricted area, and They can’t go Below 800ft., but I can fly the area up to 250ft. with no restrictions. A friend of mine is FAA and lets me know what I can get away with. I got the Mini 2 because it’s awesome, and I can’t fly my commercial Drone for fun. It’s a two camera, two man drone, and it’s really fun to fly, but it’s big and Not a Toy…my blades are 15.5in. and I can carry 2.5lbs of camera equipment…great bird but I can’t fly it….so the Mini 2 Wins!! But I still have a hard time flying without googles…it’s a better world with googles…they Are NOT just for Racing…I couldn’t do commercial flying with Fatsharks…

  10. Chris Martin on July 23, 2021 at 9:06 pm

I have looked around the net and see pilots putting these strobes in different places on the drone. My question is, is there any FFA requirements where to attach the strobe on the drone?

    Very helpfull. Thank you!

Perfect Protective Case for Lume Cube Strobe – Set the Strobe point-down on the open end of a plastic 35mm Film Canister. Then squeeze the front and back of the canister until the Strobe drops into the canister. The Strobe will not fall out, it will not accidentally turn on or scuff its lens while handling or transporting. To remove it simply turn it upside down and squeeze the canister until the Strobe drops into your open hand.

Haven’t gotten this drine yet. But I’m a bounty hunter and looking for better ways to track and make it harder for people who run to get away. Also it makes looking into 2nd story buildings or higher for work alot easier than climbing. Still have no idea if this drone is good enough for this line of work at night.

  17. 51 Drones on July 23, 2021 at 9:15 pm

Just so everyone is clear a the Mini 2 does NOT weigh 249g. The weight can actually vary from drone to drone. The average weight is 241 grams. Mine weighs 237.4 grams! The LumeCube weighs 9.8 grams, so this combo is actually 247.2g. I used a more accurate scale tonight. But that means the Ulanzi would also keep me under 250g. Still wouldn’t get it though.

  18. Colin Tucker on July 23, 2021 at 9:15 pm

Great informative video but one question for you, when I fly not at night but at let’s say sunset, I have a msg saying ‘lighting environment too dark’, so how is it possible to fly at night? If I have to change my settings, it’s something I am unaware of, huge thanks..

  19. Bob Harvey on July 23, 2021 at 9:16 pm

I have and am satisfied with the Firehouse. 👍

  20. JBG TRAVELS on July 23, 2021 at 9:17 pm

Is it true that even though I do not monetize my drone video, the FAA is argue that my channel is benefiting from it, thus I need a license?

  21. Brad Cohen on July 23, 2021 at 9:18 pm

The BEST strobes are made by FIREHOUSE, ARC V

  22. Alamo Drone Services on July 23, 2021 at 9:19 pm

I am Part 107 Certified, but even before I was I loved flying at night. It’s like controlling a little spaceship, lol. I can see my drone from a mile away. And I also like freaking people out! haha. Now that I have my Part 107 I would love to do some city hyperlapses.

  23. jannddk on July 23, 2021 at 9:21 pm

Ulanzi has a new, lighter version DR02.

Someone is flying one of those stupid things above houses in the hills at night. I’m hoping someone gets their shotgun and uses it for target practice.

  30. Rob Patrick on July 23, 2021 at 9:27 pm

I often loose sight of my Mini2 even close up. (40ft-50ft) would it help in the day time?

  31. Michael Andersen on July 23, 2021 at 9:27 pm

Maybe we need to mount them on cars, would be more useful, save real lifes.

  32. Anthony Malave on July 23, 2021 at 9:28 pm

Hey I was watching your show and you talked about a free FAA flying course to complete before March 1st can you give me a little more information about that I am interested in getting it done before March 1. I just purchased a DJI MINI 2

  33. Undercover Gardener on July 23, 2021 at 9:29 pm

The other one is popular cuz you can get it on Amazon with free prime delivery the cube says not available for over a month on Amazon and on the website you you have to pay $8 for shipping

  34. Dwayne K. Smith on July 23, 2021 at 9:30 pm

Since upgrading to dji fly 1.4.2, I keep having no screen display on phone, or switching from photo to video the display hangs. Can I fly with a strobe underneath as well so I can at least visually see the drone in the event the phone display goes?

  35. Igor Igor on July 23, 2021 at 9:31 pm

Does the light affect a quality of the video that drone takes?

  36. James Bennett on July 23, 2021 at 9:31 pm

The reason I fly at night, there are some AMAZING shots that you can get at night.

I live up in the mountains where there’s no street lights, or really any real noise pollution and just up over this Ridgeline from me is the view of the entire valley below. All the cities littered across the landscape.

  40. Mike Macar on July 23, 2021 at 9:36 pm

I have not flown at night but curios if the strobe gets in the way of your video or pix at night. Like a flash would on a camera.

I just like flying at night. I’ve always worked night shift. So it’s similar to a duck to water… Scenario.. It’s a time better suited for me! I honestly didn’t know about the light rules explained here. Just assumed bright + visible at length.. I have already purchased lights. They have white constant, white flash, red and blue strobe with the white light constant in the center and or flashing white light center.. I can see it soo far away and I have one for each arm. In rear of the drone! Attached with rubber. Wrap around like stylev straps. Now I got another one, it was for a bike I think initially. red and blue strobe brighter alone then the other ones mentioned.. It’s even brighter and also it was way more expensive. But the street signs on the ground are lighting up everywhere. It’s a neat and sometimes too much when it’s happening. I’ll comment back with the names of what they are and who makes them. The names escape me and don’t want to lose everything I just typed. Side note! Love the channel by the way. Best one I’ve landed on for my Mavic Air 2. As well as do much more information! Thanks for all you do!. Your integrity as well as your passion? Shine through brighter than the lights in this video! There’s no doubt that you are a person who is genuine with all you do and say here. Despite sponsorship. You are true to the viewer not the money! To me..? There’s nothing more important than someone who is genuine! Keep up the good work. Truly loving the channel. 👍🏻

  47. Hashem Fathi on July 23, 2021 at 9:53 pm

Why would someone want to fly a drone at night? I have this crazy guy who does that around my house at 4:00 am in the morning

I have to raise the BS flag about your 800 ft claim on Ulanzi visibility.

  50. Droning Harry on July 23, 2021 at 9:54 pm

I didn’t realize that this was the law of the land already and I think it’s great. Maybe so Summer Holiday or family stuff. Might get a video of Main St with its lights but I’m no pro so just fun stuff. I’ll use 2 Lime Cubes on my Mavic just to keep track of it for myself.
