ESPN just made drone racing a mainstream sport

It’s been compared to pod racing from Star Wars. And millions of dollars are being spent turning drone racing into a mainstream sport. ESPN is part of the mainstreaming.

To make something profitable you either have to sexualize it, or weaponize it.

Welcome to the headache of trying to make Esports a mainstream thing. Virtual sports are a thing and they aren’t going away.

This is very cool to watch but i would not call it a sport. Its a video game. Put a weapon on it and then you have something to have fun with

If a company puts a RTF kit that puts you into drone racing without all of the parts and flight controller nonsense, will be huge and mainstream this sport more.

  25. Frost Visto on September 10, 2021 at 11:44 pm

    very inspiring ending 😀

  26. iiiDartsiii on September 10, 2021 at 11:44 pm

to make it a spectator friendly the drones need to be much bigger so that people can actually see them, it’s boring just watching a dot 100 -200 m away not being able to tell the critical details like how close that was making it through the loop, or how close was a drone to another without crashing etc.

  27. Jack Johnston on September 10, 2021 at 11:44 pm

  29. Cary Fuller on September 10, 2021 at 11:49 pm

Freestyle and scenery are infinitely more interesting than watching a tiny object zoom around a set track. X class may for this reaon become somewhat better. Its fun to do but not so much fun to watch unless you have goggles to ride along with the pilot. Very few people are going to purchase goggles just to watch a race in FPV. Others can’t watch the fast turning manoeuvres as it can be visually disorienting and many hate the sound these make. So in the end it just lacks an overall general appeal to an audience. No.matter how cool you or i think something is the reality will always remain that its just not interesting for many people.

  36. Richard Bowman on September 10, 2021 at 11:59 pm

Why’ll doing the races they should do a tech fair. competition and give aways for new ideas and new inventions. do a build a work shop where everyone can join in and build drones with the best racers out there. bbq Bounce castles stalls where you can get advice and purchase drones that are within everyone’s budget and a small track for amateurs and beginners

  37. Marmota Digitala on September 10, 2021 at 11:59 pm

the women involved in this kinda sport are very different from other sports. in a bad way of course

  38. billybbob18 on September 11, 2021 at 12:00 am

The fpv video technology needs to get WAY better. I have some ideas. 😁

  39. Marcin Kiersnowski on September 11, 2021 at 12:00 am

This is not a sport, it has no physical activity component.

  40. Tbommy 88 on September 11, 2021 at 12:02 am

Well I think exposure needs to addressed. this video is 2 years old and I only found out about Drone racing a month ago. fell in love instantly. wish i could afford a rig to try this stuff out myself.

  45. SocialDamage on September 11, 2021 at 12:05 am

The technological issues have to be fixed, longer battery life, better video transfer. And then pair all that drone racing stuff with argumented reality. And Boom. A Multibillion dollar business is born

  46. SpicyFPV on September 11, 2021 at 12:05 am

It is a sport for the participants, and the participants only. Even if you are at the field with your buddies, and your quad breaks or you run out of batteries, it doesn’t take long for your patience to wear thin. You can even relate to what your friends are doing, can talk about their quad and yours, etc. So if you, as a pilot, get bored semi-quickly if you aren’t able to fly something? How do you suppose you will capture the attention of non-pilots? You won’t. While drone racing is a highly skillful activity, their are enough variables that can cause even the best pilots to make mistakes or just flat out lose when they are otherwise proven masters.

A great example would be World Series of Poker. It made a run in the early 2000’s and went mainstream for maybe a year or two and then dropped out about as fast as it came in. Why? No namers come in and take victories while the "masters" or known players catch a bad streak, bad luck, or whatever and drop out. People still play poker, and they always will. It will just remain a game, for the players, and only the players as nobody gives a damn about watching it except for a small select few.

  48. Martian Dan on September 11, 2021 at 12:12 am

Tell you what, spectators need goggles themselves, even if it’s the cheapo box goggles to begin with. BE THERE for the 3d experience, but also be able to be in each of the drones, select the channel, watch the racer you like. Also, have the audience be in the race track, cover the stands, so drones can zip right past you. Competitions should include stunts, free style and races, so everybody can place in what he or she is best at.

  49. Prop Dusty on September 11, 2021 at 12:12 am

people need to plugin and watch who or what they want to watch like having 3D glasses at the movies. So look at the cost of shelling out 1000 pairs of fpv boxes or make an app for phones and shell out literally an fpv box you put your phone into. Just a thought. I know this post is old mabye this was touched on but 1$ for a paper box to put your phone into and make it somewhat a fpv viewer might be interesting …
