Drone Safety Guide

Drone Safety Guide

Now that you have a drone, one of the most important things to be well-informed on is drone safety. This video provides beginner drone pilots with a variety of important safety tips. These are NOT rules – they have to do with general safety guidelines. It’s not a complete list, so if you have some tips, leave them in the comments and also save this video to one of your playlists.

I got myself a landing pad for free. I’m using 1 of the political signs that are around my neighborhood. I had my daughter draw a huge H on it and let her color it any bright colors she wanted. Works great. Sucks i can’t fold it. I might cut it up and make duck tape hinges.

Your channel is growing so fast. The fact that you’ve only been on YouTube for a year or so and are already at 30k subs is amazing. You will be at 100k before you know it if you keep up this great work! Congrats on 30k.

Sorry but your advice of storing Li-Po batteries with 20% power is very wrong and speeds up the process of breaking down your battery (Swelling and short circuit/fire !!!). Always keep a Li-Po battery at a cell voltage of around 3.8 volts on storage, as the least degradation of the cell occurs on that voltage. The best storage temperature is around 15-20 degrees celsius.

It’s correct to charge a Li-Po battery only when the temperature in the cell has cooled down to room temperature.

RTH height I feel is overlooked so much – think about where you are, where you’re gonna fly, always set RTH height higher than anything around you especially if your in a hilly environment – correct me if I am wrong here but this actually happened the other day – I set my RTH height to 75 meters – i was in a very remote location and the drone got out about 1 km and the signal was weakening so I went up to about 110 meters – just then I loose signal to see fpv – I fly a little higher and I get fpv back – then I lost it again – so I hit RTH on the controller – just when I did that I got fpv back – the drone did not descend and stayed at that height till it got above me – then came down to the 75 meters then all the way – I have to test this out again to make sure that’s actually the case – so the question is if your drone is higher then your set RTH height and you initiate RTH will it maintain that altitude (the height level above the RTH level set in your settings) and come back – I know if it is less than the RTH height it will fly upwards to that level and fly back at the RTH level then descend.

Great video. Informative. Every thing you cover big thumbs up! I personally never use the launch button anymore. The same emergency stop also start the props. Once started I wait to launch. It’s a great way to spin up the props. Once launch, I test yaw. Left right and up down. I personally try to never use rth.

Honorable mention from Peter. Hey, that never hurts! Nice.. 😎

  13. Adie Lusted on May 16, 2021 at 2:51 am

Russ,i think it would be extremely helpful to pilots if you done a video explaining what to do in yhe event of an app disconnect. This is very common with the poor quality side cable on mavic pro.
When it happened to me id already seen someone mentioning to check if you still have rc connection. I flew mine back by counting down the distance figures but I should of pressed RTH. so many drones lost because of this. Also turning off controller should trigger RTH

Hey Russ got a clip I’d love to share with you and maybe since you have a larger audience you can put it in a video of yours it’s about UAS / manned aircraft and the inevitable issue that is not a matter of IF but more of a When. And this video done by another YouTuber I follow only is one example but we all know happens a lot as one can look up the stats. But if it was where a UAS was involved would be HUGE news and cause so much noise that the shot heard around the world would be jealous. Any how let me know where to send you the link as so you can look at it and give your feed back and maybe get this out.

    Hi Russ
The kill switch position, if you centralise sticks does the drone return to hover ?

  16. James C on May 16, 2021 at 2:54 am

Great video! I’m just starting out and I’ve seen a lot of videos for beginner drone pilots. What I haven’t seen much of are videos of post process of the images and videos for beginners.I know that there are several programs out there for this but I’m curious as to which programs work the best for the best quality photos and video. Do you have any recommendations? Thank you

I’d love to see a video on flying indoors/atti mode!

  19. Paul Bergman on May 16, 2021 at 2:56 am

If you fly (mode 2) with your camera forward/away from you and hit return to home, the drone will rotate 180 degrees and the camera will be pointing toward you and the controls will be reversed, i.e., when you press the stick to the right, the drone will go to your left and v.v. This takes lots of practice to master. The same is true for forward and reverse. When the camera is pointing away from you, and you hit RTH, remember it has rotated so that pulling the right control back makes the drone go further away, and pushing forward makes it come closer. If you fly in tripod mode, the controls will only allow the drone to fly and maneuver slowly. Use beginner mode for quite a few flights to learn your drone characteristics. Remember releasing the controls will stomp, the drone if you become disoriented. That all folks! 🛸😎

Sensor calibration is also an impotent safety step in a pre flight check. That goes for compass, IMU (Gyro) and vision sensor system if present in the drone. They have to work flawlessly to fly safe. Multi rotor RC’s are almost impossible to fly without. Especially the compass calibration, if you take your drone more then 50 miles from your last calibration point, do it again even if the drone doesn’t request it.

Excellent post Russ. I couldn’t help notice that you didn’t mention the camera/gimbal hood. I’ve booted the drone several times now without removing it first …my bad. Anyway, this is so valuable I’m going to make a print out and use it.

  32. Scott Bailey on May 16, 2021 at 3:09 am

Hi Russ thanks for another great and important video! I have been flying for close to 2 years and still consider myself a beginner. This video hits on points that all pilots should review again and again. It’s easy to think you have it all covered when you’re familiar with your equipment but not with things you described like knowledge of the area you’re flying in and the respect you need to have for the danger of the batteries. After seeing your battery fire photos!

One thing that I find is another safety issue is not having any distractions on the ground. Be free from worrying about bags extra equipment, cases, etc. Your attention needs to be up in the air and not on the ground. I shoot landscapes and like to move around a lot. I purchased a backpack that I carry extra batteries, my camera and just about everything I need so I don’t have to worry about running back to my truck or leaving anything behind. This keeps my mind focused on what’s going on in the air and not on the ground.

This method of flying also helps with the creative aspect as well. You can walk away from your launch area and keep a better line of site. (Especially if your flying low in wooded areas). Giving you options for photo and video.

    Hello Russ,
I just received a message from dji informing me that they will no longer be supporting version dji 4.3 with iPhone 9 and lower version. I currently have a iPhone 8 and a dji mavic pro. What does this mean to me if I can’t get an iPhone 9 or 10 at this time? Will the iPhone 8 version and dji mavic pro start to not function, what should I expect?

    Thank you.

  35. Chris Slack on May 16, 2021 at 3:15 am

Good tips! The kill switch using the sticks doesn’t work on the Spark. I’ve tried it and there’s YouTube videos of guys trying it. DJI took that function away.

  43. Archeryhardcore on May 16, 2021 at 3:31 am

hey russ one thing that i didnt hear you talk about is that other types of drones and mini quads can over power your video and RX reception, i have found this out this year with my mavic pro, and spark and i would figure that it would happen with other drones also, and that is that the RX signal from fpv racing and freestyle miniquads and over ride your signal causing you to loose control and possibly have fly aways.

i tested this with my fpv quads and it does over ride the drones due to the signal power and what have you. also the mavic pro i have found out will over ride the spark due to the wifi and i dont understand why but every time me and the lady go flying we can not fly together at the same time we have to take turns.

so its good to see if there are other people with quads and drone in the area too.

  44. k6lsn on May 16, 2021 at 3:31 am

I was really hoping you would address Safe Flight Paths. Over and over I’ve seen people take serious risks in complete denial of the fact that things can happen, including myself at first, and I really think it’s important to address. A drone falling from 250 ft. can cause serious and life threatening damage and people think it’s never going to happen but it does and can happen. Even if your insured it’s a risk taken all too common for no reason really. There are plenty of places to fly without the risk and even pro jobs can be assessed with this in mind and performed a lot safer. I’ve made some serious changes lately because I really don’t wanna be faced with the situation of being the cause of bodily injury or property damage. There’s a whole other level to this with pilots taking risks and how it forms negative public opinion which directly effects there very own rights to fly yet they blast it on YouTube but that’s a whole other topic. Anyway, really wish it would have been addressed, it’s a serious matter. Peace.

  45. chillimocha on May 16, 2021 at 3:32 am

It might be old school and over the top. But I think it’s good practise to read the user manual before your first flight for any new drone. For my Mavic 2 Zoom and the Yuneec Q500 I just sold bought them both online and had read the manual before they arrived and before I took my first flight.
