I’ve been playing around with drone photography for a couple of years now, and have picked up lots of tips for better photos along the way. Today I thought I’d share a few of them. Drone photography is an entirely different discipline to taking photos with a normal camera, so this video is about bridging the differences.

Great tips James. Fantastic channel. Can’t wait to check your other videos. I love Peak District but at the moment I’m exploring my local Cannock Chase with my mini 2 which is also amazing. Greetings from Stafford

  2. Kevka Bluebird on August 5, 2021 at 9:06 pm

…and last tip: do the legal stuff only.

  3. bogrunberger on August 5, 2021 at 9:06 pm

Hi James. I know this is quite a bit from what you usually make videos of, but your videos have given me a desire to get to the UK to take some photographs of that beautiful landscape. I have a feeling that I’m not the only one!

So how about making a video or maybe a series of videos about shooting in the UK? Maybe some good locations but also other tips for non-UK residents who want to discover the UK with a camera?

  4. Andrew Ditton on August 5, 2021 at 9:06 pm

The music, oh the music! I thought I was doing well this week with a foofy French number but you had to go one better didn’t you…? 🤣🤣🤣

Unclear why this video dropped in to my recommend but glad it did as well presented, not stuffy , humorous and genuinely interesting. I have now subscribed.

  9. YoSpiff on August 5, 2021 at 9:12 pm

Useful opinion as always. I bought a Mavic Mini last year as my learning experience and then added an Autel Evo to my fleet this year. After 2 weeks had another learning experience. I almost lost it over downtown, but I dropped altitude and turned crosswind to get it back. Then when landing, It got caught in an updraft and crashed upwards into the bridge I was under. *sigh*. Brings up another question, how are you toting the drone on the bicycle? I have a Lowepro Droneguard CS150 that will fit into a pannier, though it doesn’t hold everything the Evo needs. The Evo stands a little taller than your Mavic II and the sticks don’t remove from the controller.

James, I’m not sure if anyone had pointed it out.already, but K2 is in Karakoram, not in Himalayas 🙂

I always wondered if you’d transfer well to the “big screen”, then I realised I had YouTube on my telly.

  12. Matthew Baker on August 5, 2021 at 9:15 pm

I would like to make the jump into drones but I’m hard scared of paying into it and they ban them completely. Do you think that the rules on them are constantly tightening?

  13. Михаил Дудин on August 5, 2021 at 9:17 pm

The last tip is most useful and eyeopening for some newcomers to drone photography. It’s very hard to stop making more and more shots from different angles ones your drone is up in the air. However, you might be losing precious battery power for the probably much better shot little bit later. Had that quite few times, actually 🙂

  14. Adibrex on August 5, 2021 at 9:18 pm

That would be a great spot for a timelapse

From beginning to end- the MOST ENJOYABLE tutorial I have seen in the longest time. From your new friends across the pond in Canada- Bravo good sir!

  16. Paul Taylor Photography on August 5, 2021 at 9:22 pm

Great vid mate love your delivery agreed re the drone pix I bought the wee spark with the sole intension of using it for b roll footage for the channel I considered drone photos to be cheating since then of course I’ve realised what an incredible variety of photos I can take with it. Hate the sparks battery life actually lack thereof I have three and chew through them fast. Love the tip on bracketing shots I will try that cheers. 📷

  17. Paul Appleby on August 5, 2021 at 9:23 pm

FYI, it’s not illegal to fly at night as a hobbyist.

  18. James Billings Photography on August 5, 2021 at 9:23 pm

Just got my first drone a couple of weeks ago. Agree on batteries, on my first test flight I spent 10 minutes spanking around an empty field in sport mode for the lols and used half of one! Now I’m actually starting to shoot with it, tripod mode is more commonly used 🙂

  19. J C on August 5, 2021 at 9:26 pm

Most of my drone shots are based what I see behind my Fuji XT3 landscape photography. Works all the time 😊

  20. Jonathan Andrews on August 5, 2021 at 9:27 pm

  23. scrptwic on August 5, 2021 at 9:31 pm

All my photos of landscapes are areas I hiked myself I don’t have a drone.

  24. alwaysyouramanda on August 5, 2021 at 9:32 pm

Well, I’ve learned something very useful! Thankyou!

  25. Gary Manning on August 5, 2021 at 9:32 pm

Love your insecurity and humility. Your dry humour makes me come back for more. I promise that if I ever meet up with you on my travels I wIll say hello and ply you with effusive praise. If you are with Emily’s parents, will go right over the top. 😁

  26. Paul Compton PDphotography on August 5, 2021 at 9:33 pm

Great tips and advice I had my drone out this weekend but did some b roll totally forgot to take the photos. Gutted. I love people coming to say hello as well makes you feel a bit special. Hope to meet up some day i was in the peaks all weekend.

  27. Brian Bracher on August 5, 2021 at 9:33 pm

Here’s an extra tip that I learnt early on James. Don’t wear a the bright jacket when flying a drone, especially when filming video. I used to have a bright red jacket I loved but stopped wearing as I had to clone myself out of quite a few great shots in the early days, and it’s much harder with video i.e. 5.01! 😂

  28. Kyle Flyer on August 5, 2021 at 9:36 pm

These are an amazing set of tips from a wonderful person. I always believe in checking the flying conditions on apps like UAV forecast or Weather by Tomorrow before flying.

  29. Callum on August 5, 2021 at 9:37 pm

@JamesPopsys, watching a few of your old video in Scotland and you keep talking about missing the fighter jets. You know you can get a flight tracker app/map (eg: planeflighttracker.com) and track aircraft my their name. This would let you know when they are coming, and how close. You’d still have to spot them by eye +/- 15 minute. All aircraft have a unique, and the fighter jets would all be similar (see http://www.planeflighttracker.com/2014/03/military-aircraft-tracker.html or http://www.egxwinfogroup.co.uk/?page_id=115)

  30. Daniel Henz on August 5, 2021 at 9:37 pm

Well the most helpful bit is braketing.
But with my Mavic Pro Platinum is the way how to edit the picture. I can’t get it right. But maybe bracketing could solve the problem. Is there a bracketing mode or do you have to do it yourself?

  31. Ibraheem Toure on August 5, 2021 at 9:38 pm

You really are the best. Theres nothing more to say.

  32. Ben George on August 5, 2021 at 9:39 pm

Hi James. Thanks for this; really helpful! Amy chance you could do us a video to show us how to edit a bracketed photo? Thanks; keep up the good work. 💪

What brand of hiking pants are those?

  38. Loughlan Duggan on August 5, 2021 at 9:44 pm

I dont know if you will reply or not but what type of trouser are you wearing in this video? Bit of a random question but they look perfect for hiking and photography.

  41. Warren Swales on August 5, 2021 at 9:49 pm

Thought Peak District National Park bans drone use from March to August?

  42. Joseph Palmer on August 5, 2021 at 9:49 pm

Well, you have convinced me…stay with the heated seat option in my car. If I need aerial footage I will usually get from stock. Here in the U.S. (as you say) it is becoming more and more difficult to to fly drones legally and the fines aren’t worth the risk. Another informative video. BTW…once you get heated seats you’ll never go back…LOL

  43. Lise pronounced Lisa on August 5, 2021 at 9:49 pm

OR – don’t install the battery in the drone until you need it. Charge it up, put it in a bag that is attached/strapped to your mode of transportation (bike, or a pack that is strapped to you) separately so the weight is not pulling you down in a back pack. Pull the battery out of the drone when you are not using it, you may find it lasts longer.

  44. Walk aholic on August 5, 2021 at 9:51 pm

Matt screen covers for your phone work wonders with the drone.

  45. Sander on August 5, 2021 at 9:52 pm

Now I need a heated seat on my bicycle, thanks James!!!

  46. Joni Hofmann on August 5, 2021 at 9:54 pm

  47. Grant Hoyt on August 5, 2021 at 9:54 pm

Just got the last copy of your 2018 book in the mail! Totally made my day! Thanks so luch for signing it and the little note on the invoice! Such a cool personal touch! The commentary was just as wonderful as the shots themselves, keep up the amazing work and thanks for serving as an awesome inspiration!

  48. L. Will on August 5, 2021 at 9:55 pm

What flies behind you at 2:04 thru 2:08? I thought it was a drone or maybe a bird. Watch what happens. Did you edit it out?

  49. jeff sturgess on August 5, 2021 at 9:56 pm

Bit of a random question when changing lenses have you any tips for stopping dust getting on the sensor and how to clean the sensor? Always nervous about changing lenses outside.

  50. Barrie Anthony on August 5, 2021 at 9:57 pm

"I love to be recognised, particularly when I’m with my family" nearly fell off my chair laughing at that. I would be exactly the same.
