Drone fishing – quick, cheap and easy way to use a drone for surf casting

Ever wanted to cast your bait just a little further beyond those breakers into deeper and more productive water?
For the last few years I’ve been using my trusty old DJI Phantom 3 for drone fishing. I used a rather expensive electronic bait drop mechanism until it recently broke. Instead of trying to fix it, I made a much cheaper and totally manual bait release hook out of an old water container.
It works really good and no more messing around with replacing batteries and turning on and off LED lights on the drone to release the bait.
In this video I’ll show you how I made this new release hook and why I like it better than the old mechanism. I’ll also show you how I setup my drone at the beach and fly out my baits.

Great video. For what it’s worth, I’ve found that a twist-tie works better than rubber band since it is less sticky and will slip off easier without getting bound up.

Great idea! I think I may have to invest in one of these so I can always get out past the second bar where the big boys are

Awesome stuff mate always wondered how it all works when flying your drone out for your line to drop and last thing a person needs is to buy something expensive to attach to the drone so your line can drop from the drone such a easy and simple set up wicked

    What rod are u having?

  13. Jim Somerville on August 10, 2021 at 9:35 pm

Thank you! As you get out there, I assume the line in the middle starts dragging on the water, correct? If so, you just have to have a drone with enough power to overcome that drag? I guess smaller diameter and lighter braid would be better.

You need to look at Hawaii drone fishing, much easier, just get a cheap clamp, send the drone out, in Hawaii they go 900 yards, and when they want to drop you just drop the bail on the reel, why make it hard?

Great stuff , How do you transport the drone with the plastic on ? Or apply plastic when at location?

It’s all about the ‘rubber band’.

  24. BrentnAnita on August 10, 2021 at 9:51 pm

A piece of wire shaped like a T will work better than a big pc of plastic.

This concept is so simple yet brilliant. wish there was an easy add on for like Mavic 2s. I can make something easy…Inspired by this! Thanks! Good stuff!

Is there an inexpensive powerful drone that i can use for dropping my baits off from shore for fishing? Say around 100m? I’m looking for a unit where i can just us the controllers built in screen instead of a cell phone. And no time consuming calibration like twirling it around. Just looking for a inexpensive no camera unit where i can just turn it on, then send it out visually to my spot that i can see 80-100m off from me, then have it return. A simple to use powerful unit. The Bayangtoys x16 so far is the closest, then the UpAir One. I’m using 3oz lead w/a bait maybe 3/4oz.

Nice trick! I just bought a drone and now I know I can save my money and don’t need to buy a fancy line release mechanism.

  28. Storm Strike on August 10, 2021 at 10:01 pm

Where can I get a release mechanism?

  29. phartattack on August 10, 2021 at 10:03 pm

Why not use a downrigger release clip or a simple clothes pin?

    Nice

Thanks some awesome kiwi/SA ingenuity!! Is it easy to replace the parts like motors on the Phantom 3 drones? The parts seem to be readily available.
