Thanks to Don I was able to pass the advanced exam on a time crunch, which will permit me to fly as part of my research in the Arctic (pending flight review)! Watched nearly every video & purchased the study guide. Yesterday 66% fail, today 90% pass! You rock Don.

  2. Yue Shen on July 28, 2021 at 9:11 pm

Compared to those "Drone School" who make PDF to a slide video and ask for hundreds of dollars, Don is a really kind and generous person. Love all your guide videos and study materials you gathered for us.

  3. Fiacost on July 28, 2021 at 9:15 pm

Thank you Don, VERY, VERY clear and helpful!!!!

  4. Johnny Sheridan on July 28, 2021 at 9:16 pm

Hey Don thanks for the great video . Do you know the rules flying over highways ?

  5. Debonair Drone Media on July 28, 2021 at 9:17 pm

Can’t wait to take my test soon, your videos have been nothing short of amazing. Thanks for all your hard work in putting these together Don!

  6. Grumpy Old Canadian Biker on July 28, 2021 at 9:17 pm

I just purchased the study guide. Thank you. Going to try for the 4th time to pass this demon of an exam. I top out at 74%. I’m so close to throwing in the towel.

Test seems a little tough and irrelevant in parts. Wish me luck!

  7. snapd Dartmouth on July 28, 2021 at 9:20 pm

Hey Don. Tried my test for the first time today. Missed it by ONE question!!!! Problem is… the site booted me out and it took me 5 minutes to get back in and start the test from where I left off. Would have been key to help review and catch that last error (and…I have no idea how altimeter issues have anything to do with what RPAS pilots deal with???) Your videos are very helpful! (maybe without the soothing soundtrack!) I will certainly be downloading your app prior to my flight review!

  8. Jeff Williams on July 28, 2021 at 9:22 pm

Steam fog is prevalent in very cold weather where open water sublimates to mist. Usually in cold conditions that is too cold for drone operations.

  9. René Guitar on July 28, 2021 at 9:29 pm

Just did the test… did not make the mark and will try again. Wow the test is very difficult!

  10. S.I. on July 28, 2021 at 9:29 pm

Just bought your guide now after watching a few of your videos. It will be a trusted companion during the test! Will report back on my results with the advanced exam!

  11. Laure Robichon on July 28, 2021 at 9:31 pm

Passed the advanced exam on my first try (86%), without even doing the basic one first. I am really glad. I studied hard, and on my more relaxed time I watched some of your videos that I found really thorough and helpful. Surely, it contributed to my success, so thank you very much Don !

  12. Raffi Balabanian on July 28, 2021 at 9:32 pm

WOOHOO!! Thanks Don… just passed. Not ashamed that I failed my first attempt with a 74%. I think what you said is spot on…the attitude we need to have is that failures are learning experiences. (this applies to all aspects of life…).

  13. Kenneth Baidak on July 28, 2021 at 9:32 pm

You videos are awsome, and the PDF is well done. It helped me alot with my Exam..

  14. Kyler Jones on July 28, 2021 at 9:34 pm

FYI, if you’re not following every rule (and there are a lot of them you probably aren’t if you read through Part IX – I mean, are you really keeping a log of your flights?) the advanced license is a bit of a waste of time. The only thing I saw in it was being able to fly over people but none of the DJI drones are registered for that and I’m guessing that covers 90% of the people watching this. Unless you’re flying up on people 5m away at eye level or looking to enter controlled airspace, it’s likely the basic license is enough for you to at least pretend you’re following the rules. And that’s probably all you’re doing anyway – at least it looks kind of official. These rules are so obviously intended to discourage drone use altogether if you really think about it.

  15. Hussin Ali on July 28, 2021 at 9:36 pm

Do i have to take the basic to qualify for the advanced?

  16. Elijah Roberts on July 28, 2021 at 9:36 pm

Took the exam today to kind of see where I was at. Got a 68%. Still got a ways to go yet but I’m happy they give you a full breakdown of where you failed.

  17. Nick Paws on July 28, 2021 at 9:36 pm

Hello Don. I’m just wondering if a person would be allowed to use the DJI Mavic Mini 2 for the flight review? I haven’t bought my drone yet as I am still looking into this and can’t seem to find it on the list of drones for advanced operations. Would you know?

  18. BENOIT LEROUX on July 28, 2021 at 9:37 pm

    Hi Don
do you know a french version

  19. Gino Caron on July 28, 2021 at 9:38 pm

Passed the exam, still don’t know if I can and how to fly over buildings. Theres no info about it. Can I fly by a water tour in my town? Can I fly over buildings? Can I fly besides buildings?
I guess you have to use common sense but… sometimes laws are pretty weird

  20. Jeff Williams on July 28, 2021 at 9:41 pm

  21. Jamie Macleod on July 28, 2021 at 9:41 pm

I just passed the Advanced Exam on the second attempt with a 90%, thanks to your videos and pdf documents. I got a 79% on the first attempt. I’m not a pilot.

  22. Fishing Lake Administration on July 28, 2021 at 9:41 pm

Where do we purchase your guide?

  23. TheMo28 on July 28, 2021 at 9:42 pm

Hello Don, I love your videos and they’re so helpful in studying for the advanced exam. I failed few times but I’m so close to passing. I know this would’ve taken me much longer without your help, so thanks again 🙂

I have a question though, if it isn’t too much trouble for you. I just couldn’t get a straight answer about this online.
I want to fly a drone, for constructions type work, in urban areas. What do I need to know before doing so? Just to make sure I don’t break any laws. P.s. I got an approved drone and registered it, and I’m getting the advanced license.

  24. Colton Kyle on July 28, 2021 at 9:44 pm

If I can use the AIM document during the exam does that mean that is "open book"? Even though I have a drone that is under 250g I forgot to factor in the fact that most of the areas I will be using my drone will be within the airspace of the local airport so it turns out Ill need my advanced certification.

  25. Jeff Williams on July 28, 2021 at 9:44 pm

WX is simply an acronym for "weather".

  26. Austin on July 28, 2021 at 9:45 pm

Just squeaked by with 82%! Now onto the flight review..

  27. James Stevenson Photography on July 28, 2021 at 9:45 pm

Hi Don, just wanted to say a HUGE thank you for posting such a wealth of well presented material in your videos. Today, after a week of watching all your videos and a few tries, I passed my Small Advanced exam. Without doubt I’d have had a much harder job doing so without your advice and guidance, so once again – THANKS! I should add, your videos also took away some of the fear about tackling this at all and gave me the confidence to try.

The first thing I’ll be doing is downloading your Drone Pilot Canada app, since it looks like such an invaluable resource. From your attention to detail and presentation style here, I know it’ll be amazing.

One word of advice to anyone else studying; watch ALL of Don’s videos, not just the exam related ones! I actually had a question relating to the cyclic control of helicopters which I’d learned specifically from Don’s Helicopter video! The exam is hard, very hard! But you’re in the right place to learn.

Now… just have to do that practical! So I’ll be back into your videos in the coming weeks on the run up to that!!

    Best wishes from Vancouver!

  28. Yasir Ismail on July 28, 2021 at 9:46 pm

Hi Don, this is great, thank you for all your work! I have a few questions:
    1) Should I take the basic exam before doing ground school (I noticed in another article, which led me to this video, that you strongly suggest ground school).
    2) Im in Oakville, is there a ground school you suggest?

    Thanks again for everything!

  29. Gabriel Sénécal on July 28, 2021 at 9:49 pm

You always put together very informational video and I’m gone be more confident going forward for my advance certificate.
Thank you very much for all that you do for us all. I and I’m sure we appreciated a lot.

  30. Christopher Wood on July 28, 2021 at 9:50 pm

Does your app ever go on sale? I’m trying to get my drone license and info I need on a budget to start my videography business, but everything is so darn expensive. I do appreciate all the work you have put into all this info though, thank you kind sir.

  31. Mikhail Brudny on July 28, 2021 at 9:50 pm

Transport did not spell Chord incorrectly. It has nothing to do with cord. Google "What is the chord of an airfoil".

  32. Nick Seemel on July 28, 2021 at 9:51 pm

Hi Don, I am a soon to retire airline pilot and in a previous life was a helicopter pilot. With all that I still found the scatterbrained advanced exam was a challenge. Your videos were very helpful. Thank you. I got some of the strange questions and will say that the la chute CFS question I got had no correct answer – the highest obstacle within 5 miles is not in the answers. Keep up the good work.

  33. Elijah Roberts on July 28, 2021 at 9:51 pm

do you have to take the basic training program to be able to take the advanced?

  34. Jeff Williams on July 28, 2021 at 9:53 pm

Just wrote the Advanced Exam. What parallel reality is GC in? They asked questions on what "slots" (slats) do, and there was no right answer on one of the IMU questions. I recall IFR (SAMRA and SARON) exams being easier. Our tax dollars at work. Not happy.

  35. S. Reza Fattahi M. on July 28, 2021 at 9:53 pm

Thanks for the fantastic, informative videos, Don! I watched all your videos for the basic and advanced exams, which helped me avoid going through hundreds of pages of documents! I just passed the Small Advanced Exam (5 minutes ago!), first try, 88%, and I’m super excited about it, haha. I can’t wait to take my flight review test next.

  36. T M on July 28, 2021 at 9:54 pm

Have watched a couple of your RPAS videos. Very well done. Would buy your advanced training guide, but it appears to be a hard copy that will be mailed to me, which doesn’t seem to make sense given that it contains links to TC and other sites. I assumed it would be emailed. What am I missing?

  37. Robert Gallant on July 28, 2021 at 9:54 pm

Wish I had found this channel before doing my BASIC exam, mind you I just challenged the test with no expectation of passing it just to see what it was all about, luckily I did pass…. Yay!!!! I find it hard going thru all the legal style documents. The video really help to layout what to study. Thank. When the time comes that I want to go for my Advance (don’t even own a drone yet, getting one soon), I will definitely be back to get your study guide and watch more of your videos.

  38. Olivier Gariépy on July 28, 2021 at 9:55 pm

Love your videos Don! If you could add timestamps for different parts of the videos, that would push them to the next level. Keep on this helpful work.

  39. Tyson Johnson on July 28, 2021 at 9:56 pm

Hey Everybody, What have you been paying for your advanced ops flight reviews. I’m in SK and my only option is wanting $750.

  40. V. Philly on July 28, 2021 at 9:57 pm

how soon after passing the small advance test do I have to book the flight review test?

  41. Dominic Hinse on July 28, 2021 at 9:58 pm

13:01 your link in the study guide for Aim is not working. can i have an update version from the one i bought last week ?

  42. Elijah Roberts on July 28, 2021 at 9:58 pm

its funny how you can get a drivers license and drive a dangerous car, but if you want to fly a drone you have to learn how to calibrate altimeters which has nothing to do with drones. its like having to learn how to be a mechanic so you can ride a bicycle lol.

  43. Yanik Hardy on July 28, 2021 at 10:00 pm

Hi Don, would you happen to have a francophone clone that produces great training material like yours? I am perfectly bilingual but I would rather do the test en français as I live in Québec. Thanks!

  44. ISGOV PRAJOUD on July 28, 2021 at 10:01 pm

Hello Don, great stuff, I am living in Canada, for years now, originally from the u.s.,I am a certified drone pilot, I live in a rural location, I just wanted to find out wether it matters if your a fireman drone pilot if it requires either basic or advanced, my title is captain not if that matters or not to cert, but question is again, wether it matters if your a fireman drone pilot if it requires either basic or advanced?., thank you, you are a genius and help out a lot with your knowledge, you do not miss a thing, thank you soo much.

  45. Bert Minor on July 28, 2021 at 10:01 pm

Hi Don. First off. Thanks for all these videos. There must be hundreds and hundreds of hours dedicated to this and it’s helping a lot of people. I’ll be purchasing your drone ap shortly in support. Fourth try was the charm on my advanced rpas exam and I squeaked by with an 80 percent. I was wondering if there’s a time restriction from passing the exam to taking the flight review. Also, it would be helpful if you can recommend a few places in the Ottawa area that you might know of. Thanks again for all the hard work, Don.

  46. MountainMan Media Winnipeg on July 28, 2021 at 10:01 pm

Hi! I failed a week ago with 78%. I watched several of your videos and passed tonight with 88%. Thanks again for your easy to understand information!! In saying that, I received a Basic Certificate, not an Advanced one though. So…. I suppose that means because I passed the Advanced I automatically receive the Basic Certificate to operate under until I pass my Flight Review?

I just passed the exam on first try with one day of studying thanks to you! I was very happy to pay 50 bucks to get your app ❤️

  48. Faik Turkmen on July 28, 2021 at 10:04 pm

Very useful material, thank you. One point is not clear o advance licence and operation; do I need to get a radio and licence on that to monitor Airtrafic broadcast and communicate to them on this – when flying with advance licence and close the airport area?

  49. Darrin Gallant on July 28, 2021 at 10:04 pm

Hi Don, after much study I passed the advanced exam a couple of days ago on my first attempt with a 90%. Many thanks for all your help along the way to my success! 👍

  50. Michael Almeida on July 28, 2021 at 10:05 pm

Don, I’ve only owned my drone for 3 weeks and both my wife and I have our Basic license, registered the drone and identified it with its reg. number. However, to date have not actually flown the drone due to so much uncertainty about where we can and cannot fly. As I researched our options, I stumbled across your videos and immediately subscribed after watching the first one. I’m now a few videos in and your channel is the best one out there in support of the Canadian drone pilot. Subsequently, I’ve purchased your app for iPhone and all I have to say is THANK YOU! You have cleared up so many questions. I look forward to some study and practice to get ready for the Advanced Exam and check flight. Again, Thank You so much!
