Does The DJI Phantom 3 STD/SE/4K NEED An Internet Connection To Function?

In this video, I answer the age-old question of, “Do you NEED a phone with an internet connection to operate a DJI drone?” Not only do I answer that question, I also show what happens if your WiFi connection fails mid-flight.

I just got the dji phamtom 3 standard like yours and i notice the left stick it clicks down.. Does that kill the drone if accidently hit in flight?

  4. Damon Jacobs on December 14, 2020 at 9:44 pm

So basically the only need for net or data connection is to give real time maps on the app correct?

  5. Noah Anderson on December 14, 2020 at 9:45 pm

hey thanks from County Antrim, Northern Ireland . Just bought a used one on ebay there which arrives Monday. if i use my iPhone x but someone calls me midflight, what happens? Can i answer it whilst it is mid air?

  10. John Lawson on December 14, 2020 at 9:50 pm

I’m a beginner as of today and this video makes me feel better about that particular issue.

  11. Kleine Blauwe on December 14, 2020 at 9:52 pm

One thing you did not mention is that when you lose Wi-Fi and reconnect, the app will automatically register a new home point!
I’ve had it happen that the app would bomb and I would restart it, reconnect and a new home point would be registered.
That could be a big problem if that new home point is over water, trees or other places you don’t want the drone to go home to should you lose connection again.

Do you have to have a phone to fly the drone or you can you just use the drone and controller solo?

Hi everyone in here. I just purchased a phantom 3 SE. My problem is that it just losses connection with the remote and the wi fi signal but it can manage to feed a live video stream. And take note that the drone has not yet go far, it only flies a few meters then all the signal gone. Whats wrong with the drone? What do I need to do? Thanks everyone.

  16. Flash Lawn Service on December 14, 2020 at 9:58 pm

So does the drone’s GPS work through cellular?

  17. ayechapin1 on December 14, 2020 at 9:58 pm

The question or comment I have is I was out of cell service … and it never even turned on.

  18. Linda Haas on December 14, 2020 at 9:59 pm

we are having trouble getting the dji app on our android phone. so we can connect to the the drone.

My drone is not sending out a wifi signal. How do I turn the wifi signal on so my phone will pick it up?

  21. Omega rodimus on December 14, 2020 at 10:02 pm

Hey Carson, how do you get companies to send you products?

  22. Bryan Oliver on December 14, 2020 at 10:02 pm

Say your drone isnt 5 feet away and you lose connection? The other day I was flying and the app crashed..Luckily, I reopened the dji app and it was still connected but my question is how far away can it be until you cant reconnect to the WI-FI? Or worse what happens if you cant?

  23. Jeffery Mercer on December 14, 2020 at 10:03 pm

What about the part where you hold the drone and you turn in circles (honestly…I forgot what that’s called) so I’ll just call it the setup before you can actually fly it. Do you have to do that every single time before flying? (Like you do with the MJX Bugs?

What would your opinion be as to the value of a fully functional Phantom 3 standard be as of the current date?
I’m considering buying a used one to fly in a area around a river in Florida and if I lost it I would not lose much sleep LOL.

  32. JF point Blank on December 14, 2020 at 10:17 pm

It answer a lot of my questions but if I have unlimited full coverage on my planwhich basically like for example if I watch YouTube movies I can wash them and they don’t stream would that be enough service to still see the camera from the drone without Wi-Fi connecting to the remotebecause that’s the only issue I have that stop me from purchasing a drone it’s that I don’t have home Wi-Fi connection maybe you understand what I’m trying to get to and you can reply to this if not I still enjoy your videos very educational

  33. Keribi on December 14, 2020 at 10:20 pm

Great video! I was just wondering the same thing. I believe the internet connection is needed to receive the detailed satellite imagery for the maps? Is this true? I know you can also download google satellite maps for the area you will be flying in so no internet connection would be needed to get detailed imagery.

Where can i download DJI Go App before P4 with interface like in DJI GO 4?

u need int to openthe app

  38. Hannah on December 14, 2020 at 10:27 pm

You don’t even the app to fly

My gimble camera broke so i removed the gimble arm, motor and stuff and modded it with a go-pro style attachment but you still need the flat panel on shock absorbers to function.

No need for a cell phone anymore flying line of sight although there are limitations.

    Pros & Cons

    • more fun with less stress of not breaking the most expensive part to replace

    • Compass Calibration for new location works “ flip S1 switch approx 5x to activate “

    • S1 GPS positioning lock still works

    • Auto land on low battery is smooth

    • low Battery Warning Beeps on Controller

    • Longer flight time

    • Cheaper to replace

    • Fly with caution near obstacles as no camera feedback

    • Traffic light code are your only feedback on what your P3 Stats are so best learning them

    • limited to beginner mode with approx 100 ft flight distance “ Halts with Red Rear lights when reached “ and hight restrictions.

I just got a problem 3 advanced and it is used and got a brand new iPad mini 3 and I can’t get the drone to show up in my wifi I do live 2.6 miles from an airport, ,I went down the road and had no wifi and it wouldn’t show up in my wifi setting ether

  42. Wesley Walker on December 14, 2020 at 10:32 pm

glad you did this video to explain to people that you don’t need cellular connection for the drone to work. I use an iPad mini whilst flying my dji standard and its a NON cellular version. i don’t trust cellular whilst flying drones, I’ve always been worried about flying with cellular for many reasons hence why i won’t fly with it even if i use my phone. keep up the good work and congrats on all your flying adventures in the future….

  43. Zsolt Pal on December 14, 2020 at 10:33 pm

Nice video. I would add that if for some reason your phone turns off or loses WIFI during flight and the drone is within range, but you can’t see it (the controller light will be green if it’s still connected to the drone), you can use the S2 switch to initiate RTH and bring it back. Happened to me once 🙂

  44. kire renic on December 14, 2020 at 10:34 pm

"Age old question" eh? I am pretty sure that drones cant even be considered an "age old" concept.

  46. ZERUS1648 on December 14, 2020 at 10:35 pm

I’m glad I didn’t trade in my I-Phone 6 plus when I upgraded. Now I have a dedicated drone phone. Thanks!

  47. Rich Hampton on December 14, 2020 at 10:38 pm

Just bought a phantom 3 professional from an individualand he says it’s a new version that the camera hooked up through Wi-Fi just like the phantom 3 standard and there is no USB hookup on the remote controller the default password does not work and he says he did not change the password what do I do as there is no option for forgetting your password and I can’t change the password because I can’t get into the app so what do I do

  48. funnyman1972 on December 14, 2020 at 10:39 pm

So I purposely looked up your video because of wifi.
    I had a fly off.
It came up during launch and hovered 8 feet in the air like it should and began drifting left while climbing and hit the neighbors roof.
    So here is the question???
My phone always reconnects to wifi when I get close to my house.
Could it have reconnected to my home wifi causing me to disconnect from my drone and aloud it to drift left and up???
Or is wifi just for the camera feed?
