Does more propeller blades mean more quieter drones?

Does more propeller blades mean more quieter drones?

I recently built the loudest drone I’ve ever experienced, and I wanted to take it the other direction and see what I could do to make the drone a little more quiet.

Dude, check out quadmovr here on yt if u dunno ’bout him.

And… the title of this video is grammatically incorrect, fyi.

    tesla mask is dope!

  3. DiManFPV on October 4, 2021 at 8:00 am

I just started running four blade props and my drone is significantly quieter now these are only my first set but I have got like six packs on them and I’m really starting to like them give me a month and I’ll let you know how good they turn out

i came for doggo and was not disappointed

  5. TRITON FPV on October 4, 2021 at 8:01 am

Happy New Year Paul. That huge drone strapped to your back looked like a Ghostbuster Proton Pack 😂

  6. AXM on October 4, 2021 at 8:02 am

What motors/kv and what battery were you using for the tests?

  7. Dan Richmond on October 4, 2021 at 8:02 am

that phone app seems lame. it updates super slow like theres alot of averaging or something. i have a free sound meter app that is much more responsive also if you paid for that app why does it show ads? try a different one!
    love the video!

  8. Mr Nobody on October 4, 2021 at 8:03 am

Phones have automatic gain control on the microphone. Also I highly doubt the base level was 65dB. 65dB is a lot of background noise.

You can buy a real sound meter for like 30 bucks on Amazon. You should have considered that for real precise measurements.

  9. Marshall V on October 4, 2021 at 8:04 am

I’m using the hex props on my cinego, but without the ducts and the control is amazing

    Thanks, Nurk!

  11. suzysheer66 on October 4, 2021 at 8:05 am

On the cine quad, do the props on one arm rotate in the same direction, or are they running opposite to each other? If they are opposite to each other, that would seem to me to be a source of excess noise, since they would be cutting through the "prop wash" of the first blade..

  12. Hank Lambert on October 4, 2021 at 8:07 am

Awesome video. I love the tutorial videos (I’m a better pilot because of them (even though I’m not that good yet)), but sometimes you just wanna break out the quad and do something not regular. I like the videos like this one and the 3-mile power loop; just some guys out with a drone doing some stuff. Not sure I’m making sense, but keep it up. 🙂

  13. The Lazer Project on October 4, 2021 at 8:08 am

yes, im grammar police: it’s quieter, not “more quieter”

  14. Sean Cleary on October 4, 2021 at 8:08 am

What I’ve always heard was that less props made a drone quieter. bigger props i know does make it quieter, or at least less noticeable, but for a small drone you need small props.

  15. Dagger_FPV on October 4, 2021 at 8:10 am

the first CIA "quiet" helos doubled the number of blades on the tail rotor to dramatically cut noise. dark docs rulz.

  16. sixfootsevenevan on October 4, 2021 at 8:11 am

Need to get me some 5 or 6 bladed props 😅 great vid. Happy new year 🤙🎆

  17. Magic FPV on October 4, 2021 at 8:12 am

I wonder how much the weight and pitch of the prop makes a difference 🤔 or even the length. If someone could invent quiet props it would transform people’s perception of our hobby!

  18. Andrew B on October 4, 2021 at 8:13 am

Might want to just go with your ears on this. Sones and frequency are important.

  19. NorthShoreDrones on October 4, 2021 at 8:13 am

Actually the further you are away the less unpleasant the noise gets on higher pitched props, but more annoying when close by.

  20. Bharathwaj K on October 4, 2021 at 8:13 am

What’s it’s max altitude and payload ya

  21. Otown Dom on October 4, 2021 at 8:16 am

Always thought higher number of blades was louder must just be the higher pitch

  22. john niziurski on October 4, 2021 at 8:17 am

When it comes to your drones and videos, why aren’t you selling kits instead of the many parts needed? Putting together something that doesn’t require 3 MONTHS for parts from China is a godsend!! Something that doesn’t use a HUGE camera is something some of us might like better. Thanks.

  23. Ghost Rider on October 4, 2021 at 8:23 am

Great video Nurk… From my own test, the noise is due to the prop guard… Maybe 2.5 inch prop in 3 inch prop guard could also help.

  24. le flamant rose fpv on October 4, 2021 at 8:24 am

ok but how many amps?? i tested the 5 blades and the 6 blades, the 5 blades are making my motors very hot and no improvement.. the 6 blades are very light so is not making the motors hot, but it take soooo many amps! the 3 blades props are the best. (for my testing..)

  25. diveflyfish on October 4, 2021 at 8:24 am

The Big one sounds like an aerial Hyena family in an argument……..

  26. Clark McCaw on October 4, 2021 at 8:29 am

The mic on the phone is on the display side…

  27. edouard sue on October 4, 2021 at 8:29 am

phones app are not accurate Db meter cause the mic saturate quite fast… but it give you a hint at least

  28. Josh on October 4, 2021 at 8:30 am

I had the opposite effect. They seemed louder to me.

  29. CowFPV on October 4, 2021 at 8:30 am

Hey nurk! What is the purpose of the tests? Are you trying to achieve the quietest for general use or on-set? It seems like an interesting problem. Would any kind of rifling in the duct reduce this? Make the airflow less turbulent, thus driving down noise levels? Also, is it just the props, or is it possibly also the ducts "ringing" with motor vibrations? Possibly a piece of felt between the ducts and frame as a test?

  30. learning to fly on October 4, 2021 at 8:33 am

i would also wonder about the prop pitch variable happy new year

  31. Gonun on October 4, 2021 at 8:35 am

Thanks! I’m always concerned about the noise of my quads bothering other people in parks and such. Switching to toothpicks helped a lot to reduce noise, but I guess I could try some other props to make it even quieter. Someone knows some silent 65mm props?

  32. John Larson on October 4, 2021 at 8:36 am

    Happy new year everyone. 🤓

  33. GazB fpv on October 4, 2021 at 8:36 am

I went from 3 to 2 blades on my 5 inch and bi blades were way quieter

  34. Alief Van den berg on October 4, 2021 at 8:37 am

    Wierd quads lol

  35. Polymerbob on October 4, 2021 at 8:38 am

    More quieter?

  36. DOHC FPV on October 4, 2021 at 8:38 am

6:34 that is the worst sound ever when you get that partial Betaflight start up chime. Great video Nurk!

  39. it`s_chenko on October 4, 2021 at 8:45 am

I think 5 blade prop is not to much quiet but more softer than 3 blade prop.

  40. Flying Ryan - Drone Videos on October 4, 2021 at 8:46 am

    dope watch!!!

  41. Kevin Lee / TreeTimeFPV on October 4, 2021 at 8:48 am

Thanks for that awesome video!!! Merry Christmas and happy New Year to you and yours… I am flying the Diatone Taycan and have noticed the 5 blades seem much quieter than the 3 as well. I just switch back to 3 blades to see if it would help with hot motor issues. Will the 5 blade have a tendency to over prop the motors or will it not make a difference? Question 2: will the pid tune stay the same between props or will it have to be adjusted also. Thanks. P.s. the 12s build got me into to FPV and Freestyle. Thanks for that.

  42. Urban Adventures on October 4, 2021 at 8:48 am

A phone app decibel meter is pretty much useless.

  43. Paul Taylor on October 4, 2021 at 8:48 am

The higher pitch is much more annoying to me even though it reads lower on your meter.

  44. yohanzo on October 4, 2021 at 8:49 am

Nice… I’ll probably go w/ 5 blade. Thanks for doing this man!

  45. SKIDOOSH on October 4, 2021 at 8:52 am

Hmmm…Interesting. Keeping in mind a "lower" pitch will penetrate more and travel further than a shrill pitch. Like the bass from a stereo can be heard thru walls while I won’t be able to hear the high hat cymbals (or treble) from the drummer.

  46. 509FPV on October 4, 2021 at 8:53 am

87dbi really is still fairly quiet I thought the big one would be louder than that

  47. andy cooper on October 4, 2021 at 8:53 am

I think the smaller the prop the lower the frequency and higher decibel, however the apparent loudness with a higher frequency or "shrill" as you mentioned has a perceptible loudness more than the mere 5db you save on the meter. Also, I think dogs hear it easier with the higher frequencies, as I notice animals further away howling more when I fly higher bladed props around my neighborhood. I think a good trade off for everything is 5 blades.

  48. NURK FPV on October 4, 2021 at 8:54 am
  49. lavachemist on October 4, 2021 at 8:56 am

Every 10db increase is double the perceived volume, for reference.

  50. Dron-o-Tron on October 4, 2021 at 8:56 am

You need a closed room to do the tests. The meter will work better that way too
