Do I need to register my Toy Grade Quadcopter with the FAA?

I’ve had a number of questions on this already so I thought I would make a video about the new FAA Registration laws and what they mean for toy grade quadcopters…aka drones.

One thing I forgot to mention is the age guidelines. If you’re 13 or older, you have to register your drone. If you’re under 13 someone over 13 has to register the drone for you.

Here’s a Link to register your drone:
https://www.faa.gov/uas/registration/

Here’s a link to their FAQ page:

Quit spreading false information. There is no Law. Flying UAS for "Hobby or recreation" doesn’t require FAA approval. There is no law saying you have to register your UAS if it is for "Hobby or recreational flying" They say so right here:

    https://www.faa.gov/uas/publications/model_aircraft_operators/

"Having fun means flying safely! Hobby or recreational flying doesn’t require FAA approval but you must follow safety guidelines."

No way I could afford to pay that kind of fines, they would just have to shoot me or lock me up for life, for playing with my toy drone in my own backyard… I know,I Know it is almost 3 years later now and everything has probably changed now you probably have to register even if you just carry the drone in your car while driving down the street……everybody knows how evil and dangerous a plastic toy drone is…

Has anyone here been prosecuted legally for not doing this?

  15. Dean F on June 1, 2021 at 3:41 am

The FAA is an UNELECTED group of "authority figures" that violate their own legislation arrived at in conjunction with the AMA that states under Section 336 "the FAA is prohibited from creating any law or regulation for model aircraft".

Noobs calling multirotors "drones" scared all the politicians and secured all this paranoid revenue generating hype. How cool are all those noobs with "drones" now? Pathetic,

FAA official interpretation of Special Rule 336:
    https://www.faa.gov/uas/media/model_aircraft_spec_rule.pdf
The FAA interpretation makes a clear distinction as to what constitutes “Visual Line of Sight” and what constitutes “Hobby or Recreational Purposes”.
So, what are you waiting for? Go look ‘em up and read ‘em; I’ll wait! Now, with this in mind:
If I’m standing at the flight-line of my local AMA sanctioned flying field performing amazing aerobatic feats with my Goblin 500 – being careful to maintain visual line-of-sight, and being careful not to exceed the (FAA mandated) 400-ft ceiling – my helicopter and my flying is NOT subject to the FAA registration rule.

  19. patriotpaul on June 1, 2021 at 3:52 am

This is a giant overreach and tax by the federal govt with a 7 min online registration that has nothing to do with safety. There is 1 lone patriot fighting the FAA and winning. I am donating all my AMA money to him for doing their job! You can listen to the trial opening here and there is an excellent video by xjet about the subject. https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?2576814-Support-John-A-Taylor-s-Lawsuit-against-the-FAA-s-Registration-Rule/page2 I am all for safety but not badly written rushed laws that arent constitutional.

  20. Demarcus Taylor on June 1, 2021 at 3:53 am

Why is there so many different registration sites? I heard alot of these are SCAM sites to get money.

  21. uppermostking02 on June 1, 2021 at 3:55 am

you do not need to register your drone. I haven’t registered my drones and nobody from the FAA has come knocking on my door. but always remember to fly a drone responsibly.

Thank you, answered all those drone registration questions. I have several quads from micros to racing 250, and a large camera drone. I have not been able to find a definitive, yes and no break down. This makes it very simple, Thank you, only thing missing is were to register. I have been looking and have not found a place to actually register, the FAA site link I keep finding is broken.

can u post some more vids

  32. Alas Anonimo on June 1, 2021 at 4:08 am

Is because in these app they are including every hospital or police station like it’s an airport, just because there’s a heliport here a helicopter may land, if download the app in your IOS, or Android device you will see what I’m talking about, is sucks… Because it looks like this app is being designed to keep all the drones out of the air, because the app don’t show any phone to call o contact any airport, so I’m hoping that somebody will do a video tutorial about the AFF app,….

  33. KING B 45 on June 1, 2021 at 4:08 am

OK then review them plz thats how u get more views and subscribers

  37. mewrongway on June 1, 2021 at 4:11 am

Haha I never did register! John did what the AMA was to chicken to do!
Shame on the AMA for sleeping with the enemy! We modelers should boycott the AMA and teach them that we will not tolerate them sleeping with the enemy!

  45. Alas Anonimo on June 1, 2021 at 4:16 am

Hi there I’m trying to get some help with a question that I have, first I have to mention that I already did the registration, I don’t fly my drone more than 200ft up in the air, I don’t let it go more than 200 yards away from me, but my problems start whit the 5 miles from an airport, first, the international airport is located 22 miles from my house, the hobby airport is located 33 miles away, but with the new FAA app no matter where I go around the entire city I’m always with 5 miles from an airport and/ or an airspace that requires permission, so my question is how do I going to get in contact with the airport? Do I going get into trouble if I decide to fly my drone below 200ft, no more than 200 yards away from me, if I don’t get in contact with the airport….

  50. Over & Back on June 1, 2021 at 4:22 am

Look, take it from an old cargo pilot who has dealt with the FAA for fifty years….DO NOT REGISTER YOUR DRONE! The absolute last thing you want to do is get involved with the FAA and their unlimited line of money grubbing, make your life miserable, line of B.S. They’ve got so many regulations & rules to enforce, they don’t know them themselves. All they want is your money so they can request an increase in next years budget appropriations. You just make their job easier (to find you and fine you) by registering. Just don’t fly stupid, meaning don’t fly over crowds, people’s homes, limit your altitudes to 500 feet, just use common sense etc. Fly smart & stay away from FAA. Not trying to sell a book but if you want to read what I think about the FAA, read Over & Back by Wild Bill Callahan…on Amazon.
