DJI Mavic Mini 249g Drone Rules for Hobbyists | What FAA Regulations Do You Still Have To Follow?

DID DJI just THUMB THEIR NOSE at the FAA REGULATIONS With the release of the DJI MAVIC MINI 249g Drone? Rules Explained here… Some FAA Rules apply while other laws do not. This video takes a deep look at the current state of regulations under the FAAs control in the US and outlines exactly what is the current state of affairs, for the moment. So is this a Brilliant or Sinister move by DJI, so slyly targeting 249g? What do you think, II’d like to know. Let me know in the comments…

Summary of the rules to follow start at 11:03

Sorry, at 6:10 I incorrectly said “below” 250g has to be registered, of course, below this does NOT currently have to be registered but “Above” does…

A Sincere Thank You for stopping by Alien Drones channel!
Good Flying!

Wait a minute I hear all these drone have 107 pilots and all those ship talking about these drones that are under the legal weight were the FAA could controls them. The way I read the law is that any drone over that way the FAA has legal jurisdiction can a lawyer feet on this

  2. LARRY D on June 26, 2020 at 7:24 am

Is non 107 test . No maps I hope . It would be nice if it’s like DJI knowledge test when you 1st fly

  3. Michael on June 26, 2020 at 7:24 am

Thanks for your video. Is that mean I can’t upload the video I took with my Mavic mini to social media? If I registered on FAA, I can upload the video, right?

  4. P Costello on June 26, 2020 at 7:28 am

Great summary for beginners. There is no mention of flying at night with your Mavic Mini.

Your info on FAA registration is not entirely correct. What you showed was for Part 107 (Commercial) pilots. Only commercial pilots have to register individual aircraft, and they must register ANY drone they use, regardless of size (including the mini). Recreational pilots only need to register themselves, not their individual aircraft, so all of their aircraft will have the same FAA registration number. This means that if you already own a drone above 250g and are registered with the FAA as a recreational pilot, you aren’t really getting any benefit from the weight being below 250g aside from it being lightweight to pack around. It’s still an amazing value for the price, but it’s something to be aware of.

    Forgot about night flight requirements

  10. Wolfpack 46 on June 26, 2020 at 7:36 am

Just to be a little more clear, all drones flown under Part 107 or as a Public Aircraft must be registered, irrespective of weight. See the preamble to the registration and marking rule for more insight about the requirement for aircraft to be registered.

What a shame such harmless hobby is so legally hunted.

Thank you for this information. I look forward for that training video when the time comes for the test.

  15. Scott F Hoffmann on June 26, 2020 at 7:43 am

So, you just showed a part 107 requirement for registration, at this time. For recreational users, I have one number for all my drones.

i bought a phantom 4 pro then discovered all the stuff i couldnt do with it such as without the 107 i could not put my media on any commercial web site or even give it away for someone to use like real estate sales. now we have this mini where you dont have to register it and i am assuming the recreational part of the rules apply to the mini as well so you cannot use this for commercial use like real estate sales or even video of a advertised event such as a fun run. by the time i got mine figured out i really couldnt do much other than personal video and being old and retired there is no way i want to jump through all those hoops so i gave my new drone to my grand son. i spent over 3K on this setup and now wish i had bough the cheaper one then discovered all those rules and regulations.

This is my first drone ( mini ) , Do I need some kind a license ? I’m going to be using it recreational .

  18. Steve Anderson on June 26, 2020 at 7:48 am

At 6:11 or so, you do say (and I know you meant the opposite) that the registration applies only to drones under 250g.

  20. Time Traveler on June 26, 2020 at 7:50 am

Thank you for your superb advice and for showing excellent FAA regulation law information to us. I will purchase Mavic Mini to circumvent the FAA pilot license requirement. I need a simple drone with a basic good camera for my filmmaking action scenic spots rather than spending on the costly and unsafe rental hiring helicopter flying, and even expensive Hollywood film equipment such as jib crane. The 107 recreational pilot license exam seems to a difficult challenge to pass and it costs us money to train and get the certificate. Tell me about the 107 recreational pilot license exam? We are not interested in flying a small aircraft, but only for a drone.

Do u live in Ireland sir , if yes please is the mavic mini need to be registerd or not please?

  22. D0PeEyEz on June 26, 2020 at 7:53 am

Can you make a video where exactly we can fly the drone? No license required?

  23. Mario Gordo on June 26, 2020 at 7:53 am

I leave in the middle of no where no people around the area what are the rules do I follow

  24. 3D Printwiz on June 26, 2020 at 7:54 am

Remote ID is also not required for DJI mavic mini. When the remote ID is implemented I think Mavic Mini will be the only drone left flying the skies for us recreational pilots.

  25. John Switzer on June 26, 2020 at 8:06 am

Mini drones, nano drones and probably thousands of "toy" drones all fall into this same trap of people believing they are outside the regulations. These have been around for years without the FAA taking particular notice. I wonder if the fact that the Mavic Mini is a higher quality more serious drone will be the thing that triggers a rule change or if its just one more in that long list of drones under 250g.

  26. Jackson's Ramblings on June 26, 2020 at 8:06 am

Those with skins on them are over 250g. A gem clip will put it over 250g.

  27. Steve Anderson on June 26, 2020 at 8:10 am

Do you go into community guidelines in more detail anywhere else? I see them mentioned and I’m sure people are wondering “what community?”

  28. JSKCKNIT on June 26, 2020 at 8:11 am

249 grams. Puts on ND filter. = 250g!

Great info and very much needed.
