DJI Ground Station Pro and the Mavic 2 Pro. 3D mapping modeling

A new full length Ground Station Pro Class Launched July of 2020 is now available for $12.99:

So I’ve really gone down the rabbit hole with this video. I recently decided to give ground station pro a second try out. The newly updated application has some improved features since the last time I tried it in early 2018. And with my initial testing in this video I think there’s hope for ground station pro.

First off in 3-D map missions you can have the camera follow along with your flight path and aircraft heading. That wasn’t available in the earlier version. Additionally they’ve added some flight log abilities although the auto sync isn’t there yet.

For this video I flew two back to back missions with the Mavic 2 Pro. The mission flights worked perfectly. And while the 3-D models didn’t work perfect they were OK. With one exception. Pix4D model had some issues which I’ll share in the second episode of this series.

Hey Rich thank you for the quick returns . I want to be able to stitch and do 3d s send me where I need to be . Your my favorite on this great app.

  3. Spiros Kirolivanos on August 29, 2020 at 10:18 am

If you use Pix4D mapper , I should map with
Pix4D capture only? Or I can use DJI GS Pro
    bcs I think it’s better .
    Can someone answer me?

DJI is leaving its competitors in the dust in my opinion. Check out some of my DJI Drone videos, I will greatly appreciate that.

  10. vracan on August 29, 2020 at 10:23 am

so are you still recommending dji gs pro?

  11. sunshynff on August 29, 2020 at 10:23 am

Hi Rich, I am VERY happy I came across your page, I have a few (I’d like to say quick, but I doubt it) questions, and pick your brain a bit. Little background of myself, recently had to retire few yrs early from a 23yr career that I loved, as a Firefighter/medic, due to some minor medical issues. Been a hobbyist around 5yrs or so, started off with P2, then P3P and P4. Started messing with fpv racing/freestyle, and got into that pretty heavy for a while. Last year just before retiring, started to miss the photog side, and dusted off last remaining DJI drone, my Mavic Pro and started playing around with that.

Now I have some time on my hands, I get bored easy, so I am starting a drone business. Would like to offer the usual stuff, inspections, weddings, real estate, etc.. but also looking at doing some unique services too, and also volunteering drone resources with my local fire and police dept., since I ran the drone program at my full time fire dept. before retiring. I’m currently studying for the 107, and besides my Mavic, I purchased a DJI 550, that still needs some assembly, and just last month found an unbelievable deal on a DJI S1000, with the Zenmuse gimbal and a Lumix G9 camera.

I am very comfortable piloting drones, fairly confident in my abilities with intelligent flight modes and waypoint missions on consumer models, confident in the software Betaflight that configures our racing drones and have some decent intermediate level editing software, Adobe Premiere Elements. This S1000 though, has me quite intimidated, it uses the A2 flight controller, so I’ll need to learn A2 assistant software, along with DJI IOSD MarkII, and the Ground Station uses DJI’s 2.4GHz bluetooth data link w/ BTU module. Then the whole kit & caboodle is operated by 2 Futaba radios, one for drone, one works camera. Not to mention I have almost no knowledge about actual photography, other than set everything on auto, point and shoot. The guy that sold me the S1000 worked in Hollywood as a drone operator for a few years. He said after learning the software side of this drone, start reading everything you can find on photography, shutter speed, aperture settings, etc, all those setting you never mess with, learn how to use them.

So I guess my question is, after all that rambling, do you think I bit off more than I can chew if I want to offer engineering type services like 3Dmodeling. Like to be somewhat up and running sometime this Spring. Is the GS software fairly easy to integrate to having experience with GO app waypoints yet no experience with 3D modeling? Should I just stick to things more up my alley/easier, like real estate or weddings or like the lighting rig I am making for the 550? (I’ve designed a rig using pair of 100w Bridgelux LED chips, air cooled w/fan + heat sinks powered by 6s 7amp lipos, combined brightness of 26k lumen). Could be used for night photo shoots, or for search n rescue with emergency services. Are the classes listed above online I take it, looks like a few would be perfect for me.

Anyway, any advice or tips you could throw my way would be greatly appreciated. Again, sorry for rambling on the thread, I tend to state a lot of detail, plus like I said, getting bored not working, so "droning on" in youtube vids fills some Happy Flying!

Do I need to have Mac computer for this, or I can use normal PC?

  13. usernamegottaken on August 29, 2020 at 10:26 am

Hi Rich, I’m a subscriber. May I ask if there are any free offline (use own PC) to stitch and generate the 3D maps? I could search, but didn’t have time to test them all. What would you recommend. Thanks in advance.

  14. Francois Badenhorst on August 29, 2020 at 10:30 am

Does it support Terrain Follow with 3D mapping? I have been using Pix4D capture for about 2 years now and do not regularly need this function but it becomes tedious to split a single flight into 2-3 to maintain a relatively constant GSD. I use this data in Pix4D mapper as-well so it will easily resolve for key points and create a model as long as the GSD between 2 flights remain "GSD1" smaller than or equal to "2xGSD2". I’m looking into Metashape as I have done a few projects using this recently but both seem pretty much the same in my opinion except the price difference and support available. What overall best flight planning software would you recommend for a small survey company with some funding? Whether mobile or desktop as I am not sure how far we can push Metashape with flights of varying GSD.

Rich great video. What is the difference between photomap and 3D map area?

  16. Clyde Digital on August 29, 2020 at 10:32 am

I’m just wondering if ground station allows you to embed the model on a website so that others can view and use it?

  17. car migs on August 29, 2020 at 10:34 am

Hi… tnx for the video… im using mavic 2 zoom, im trying to learn gsp from this video alone, it helps alot… but from what i have observed from your video, there is no gimbal pitch in my app… i tried looking at it while looking at your video and vice versa… in your video its just above rth, but in my app its not here… and 1thing i want to ask also is how to generate the map after all the flights… tnx again… more power..

  18. Mohd Izham on August 29, 2020 at 10:36 am

hi rich, is agisoft photoscan standard edition is sufficient for stitching the photos taken by DJI Ground Station Pro?

  19. G Langenbach on August 29, 2020 at 10:36 am

Do you use/recommend neutral density filters with the Mavic 2 pro

  20. Imran Mhn on August 29, 2020 at 10:38 am

Too bad, dji GS Pro app didn’t compatible with my ipad 2 version 😕

  21. Arturo Rodríguez on August 29, 2020 at 10:40 am

Hi Rich, do you know if the Mavic 2 Enterprise (Zoom Version) is supported? great video

  22. Garrick Muller on August 29, 2020 at 10:40 am

Ok Rich you showed us how to map the area how about the stitching or turnong these into 3d .

  23. serdar kılınç on August 29, 2020 at 10:41 am

Sorry man because of my english, I couldnt get how did you create these waypoints

  24. Pedro Jose on August 29, 2020 at 10:42 am

Hi Rich, you know the Flight -Plan-For – DJI application, I have it and if you could do a tutorial of information and management to be able to control it in all its parameters, I leave you a link to take a look at it, Thank you greeting …

Hi Rich, another great video and you’re the first channel I’ve ever really subscribed to. Have you ever tried a 3D model of a house or other building? I find it hard to get nice sharp edges along rooflines, or where the walls meet the ground. Thanks again

  26. Bruno De Marques on August 29, 2020 at 10:47 am

Hi Rich, fantastic video! I have a couple of questions (not yet answered below) I’m trying to access crop health (descoloration, for example, but at a finer scale).
How low can the drone get so I may get more detailed mapping?
Is collision an issue with pre programmed GS flights? (Uneven terrain, trees, …)
Is gps data from each photo saved in the jpeg file? How can I check it? (It must be somewhere, right?)
    Thank you so much

  27. Jim Cano on August 29, 2020 at 10:50 am

Great video! Is the Mavic 2 Enterprise integrated into the GS Pro already, too?

  28. Кулько Григорий on August 29, 2020 at 10:52 am

Hi from Russia, mister Rich. I noticed that you are using autofocus mode. This is not good for getting the exact geometry of your 3D model. It is better to fix the focus at the height of the flight mission. And thanks for your tutorials.

  29. Ray Hollands on August 29, 2020 at 10:56 am

Hi, just come across this video and great job! I have been trying to do this with my mavic pro for a while, but it seams the reason it fails is that I’m using pix4D.

Just a shame DJI don’t promote this and build it into their enterprise version. Would love to know more about the process of generating the 3D model and how I can then take that model into an architectural design package?

  30. Family Fun R.C. on August 29, 2020 at 10:57 am

    That sucks. Apple sucks.

  31. Javi Lajara on August 29, 2020 at 10:57 am

Can it shoot raw or only jpg?

  32. Daniel Rodriguez on August 29, 2020 at 10:59 am

Did you already figured out why pix4D have a different location?

  33. Laurent Duverge on August 29, 2020 at 11:01 am

Hi Rich, great video. I am just starting doing automated data collection for mapping, so learnt a lot about GS Pro. Re. Bruno de Marques’s question below, DJI Terra (new software they have brought out) will now allow the use of Digital Terrain Model data to factor in/compute a "Terrain Follow" option to maintain the same altitude across a wide expanse with elevation changes. Failing that, one can map ribbons along the slopes to maintain the same perspective on slope ground, but it is fiddly. Hope that helps. Regards, Laurent.

  34. Cobb Ervin on August 29, 2020 at 11:01 am

Thank you so much for the video, this is extremely helpful!

  35. Randy Mennie on August 29, 2020 at 11:01 am

Great video. I’m just delving into drone mapping/surveying (I already do video/photo work) and I like how you showed everything from beginning to end. How to you merge the north/south and east/west missions into one large mission?

  36. Shailesh Shrestha on August 29, 2020 at 11:02 am

whats the cost for GS pro?

  37. Jack Handley on August 29, 2020 at 11:05 am

Hi there, I use maps made easy for small projects, but struggling to find if I can change resolution of the Mavic 2 pro when taking photos using this? Maps made easy allows me to upload around 60 normal photos at full res, figured if i dropped it say by 50% i could cover more area, albeit at a lower res?

  38. vracan on August 29, 2020 at 11:05 am

I am so confused with the shooting angle setting! Nobody on youtube and even the gs pro manual explains it well. Guess I ‘ll just go to the field and experiment with it.

  39. vracan on August 29, 2020 at 11:06 am

Just wanted to point out that I don’t think there is any point using cross-hatch flights if the camera is pointed straight down. I can see the point only if the camera gimbal angle is anything but -90degrees. What do you think about this Rich?

  40. Copper State Aerial Photography on August 29, 2020 at 11:09 am

I don’t see the M2Zoom listed. Does it not work with the program? Thanks

  41. Bo Tornvig on August 29, 2020 at 11:09 am

Thanks for a great tutorial and for taking me in to the 3D world 🙂 Is it possible to do backups of the missions and the way-points, somewhere else than the ipad? If I’m following a 2 year project I’ll feel more safe to have my missions a secure place.

  42. Gary Rodriguez on August 29, 2020 at 11:10 am

Amazing video; thanks! I just started exploring the drone world. This technology will help me great time with my jobs. It is possible to make 3d mapping using Mavic Mini?

  43. Ronald Conway on August 29, 2020 at 11:11 am

Rich, have you used the Pilot APP with the Mavic 2 Pro Smart Controller?

  44. Garrick Muller on August 29, 2020 at 11:13 am

Hey Rich is this app free ?

  45. Carlos Med Vas on August 29, 2020 at 11:14 am

Hi Rich thank you great teaching video. Does GSP work with Mavic pro?

  46. Gio Alvarez on August 29, 2020 at 11:15 am

Hi Rich, great video!!, You may tray to process the model on arbitrary mesh not high field on Photo Scan, that should give you less melted trees.
