Can you fly a drone in MAUI, HAWAII? Tips for overcoming challenges & getting great footage

Is it legal to fly a drone in Maui? What are the FAA and state drone laws in Hawaii? What are some of the challenges of flying a UAV there?

Over the course of a week-long vacation in Maui, I flew my DJI Phantom 4 Pro and my DJI Mavic Air in various places around the island. This video covers some tips and tricks for flying your drone on the Hawaiian Islands – a place where unexpected climate changes can cause some challenges! Wind, helicopters and rain storms are just some of the things you need to watch out for.
Thanks for watching!

Great info Nicole! My wife and I will be going to the islands for the first time in Oct. We will be staying at Maui, Kapalua specifically. I’m really looking forward to getting my little Spark in the air and getting some pics and vids..

Great video–thank you! I’m getting ready to go to Maui this Sunday for a week, and I am taking my Autel Evo (it is registered with the FAA and has a sticker with my #)….this isn’t my first time in Maui, but it is my first time taking a drone. I’m very excited, but can you clarify something if you know? Is it best to take the drone and one xtra battery in my carry on? The battery is a Li-Po 4300 mAh 49.02 Wh 11.4 V. I liked and subbed…hope you will check out my channel too! Lots of drone videos!

Your video title — "Can you fly a drone in Maui?" — Fly your drone when John, one of the tour guides from the ‘Road to Hana’ tours is out there – See what happens …

I came across your channel last year scoping SF drone footage to find great places to fly and joined your notification squad. Love your videos.. I just kicked out my first drone tip video for flying in the cold and snow. Would love to hear the thoughts of a fellow pilot..

We will be flying into Maui today… 12/11/18. Thanks for the info!

Great tips! Thanks for sharing your experience. Would love to see more footage. Hope your drone is okay. I use flightradar24 app and click on helicopters in the area to see if any are doing lots of flybys and have a spotter keep an eye out. Also, the DarkSky app offers push notifications and pretty accurate(though it’s gotten worse and then better over the years) weather forecasts.

Amazing informational video on this Nicole! I wish I would’ve watched this before taking my drone out to Maui earlier this year. I didn’t run into any issues but nonetheless, would’ve been cool to know about this! Thanks for sharing, I’m stoked for your other videos! I’m checking out the rest of your channel right now 👊

I also flew in Maui, only at 3 different locations. We went on a trip to Molokini crater. and I didn’t know there was a no fly zone on the area because of birds in the area. The moment i landed the drone on the cruise ship the captain approached and told me about it. But is funny because their video commercial they made I believe was done also using a drone. This is my other channel with footage of my flights.
