Calling the Airport to Fly a Drone

Calling the Airport to Fly a Drone

Currently, FAA guidelines state that you cannot fly a drone within 5 miles of an airport UNLESS you contact the airport and control tower. I decided to give it a try by calling the Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport.

Nice example! 👍 That was a pretty quick flight approval considering how many people your call passed through! I like when the one lady began stuttering after seemingly ready to deny your request lol. Then the other guy was all like “yeah, no problem bruh!” 😂

  2. Island Air Cavalry Tango on August 7, 2021 at 9:36 pm

There’s no wonder, why they’re called drones, and their pilots are drone pilots. They’re indisputably unmanned.

  3. moddosser on August 7, 2021 at 9:39 pm

Wasn’t the response I was expecting. Good on you and the airport.

  4. Jason Kirk on August 7, 2021 at 9:40 pm

CHA – Chattanooga TN was cool back in the day when we had to call the tower, before we had LAANC..

  5. TheBigb1973 on August 7, 2021 at 9:41 pm

The mavic mini changed all that 😀

  6. charlie on August 7, 2021 at 9:42 pm

That I understand but this mickey mouse AEX here in Alexandria you can’t contact the tower which is about right for a one horse town trying to be a international airport, it’s a joke like the politicians we have, unbelievable.

  7. It's Beckon on August 7, 2021 at 9:42 pm

Perfect role model, that’s how it’s done and how we as drone pilots can avoid to make ourself unpopular.

  8. Random Zombie on August 7, 2021 at 9:42 pm

I did this where I live in Canada, and it’s a lot more confusing then that. I’ve waited like 4 days for a response from the airport, and still no reply.

  9. Christopher Wilson on August 7, 2021 at 9:44 pm

The FAA is our friend… 😀
    Good job !!!!!

  10. Stefan G on August 7, 2021 at 9:47 pm

I liked your video and how you presented yourself, it put the image of the drone community in a positive and responsible light, one thing in the future to protect yourself when calling someone on the phone and recording the phone conversation, please notify those individuals that you are recording the conversation and in this case for youtube documentary on the right way to call the FAA and the right way to communicate your request and information, otherwise this could be construed as an illegal recording in certain jurisdictions and you could be arrested for it, especially when its a Federal institution such as the FAA. Stay safe.

There is a video on youtube of a toy drone hitting a test wing to demonstrate the damage. After seeing how much damage a toy drone can do to a metal wing, the rules are really necessary.

Looking back in time here… Thank God for instant approval through the app that is available now.

  15. Kickstand on August 7, 2021 at 9:56 pm

Now it’s tap tap tap and you get a LAANC text message. So glad they made it easier and streamlined for us. Happy flying!

  16. Ronnie Underhill on August 7, 2021 at 9:57 pm

Can you see your altitude when you’re flying?

  17. Ray The Drone Guy on August 7, 2021 at 9:57 pm

After this video I believe people will get very discourage about calling an airport.

I called my local airport to request what authorization I needed to have to fly within its class D airspace. My experience was not positive: ATC: "All I can tell you is to go to…they should be able to tell you everything you need to know."

    Awesome info thanks

I see UAS NOTAMs all the time. The scary ones are near airports with SFC-4000FT (surface to 4000FT) reports of planned activity. Hopefully the 3rd zero is a typo.

  28. walter kersting on August 7, 2021 at 10:14 pm

Sir, I have no idea what I’m talking about, but I’m going to try to act like I’m your mom or something and imply that I have the wherewithal to tell you not to… Just a moment my superior would like to speak to you…

  29. DALE thebelldiver on August 7, 2021 at 10:15 pm

Now; my response from our location was a 180 from yours. The airport manager acted annoyed I would even bother him. My intent was only to inquire about launching and landing an ultralight aircraft at the newly modified municipal airport.

  30. sushanth on August 7, 2021 at 10:16 pm

I live in India and I live near the airport in Punjab the airport is 3 km far and I fly my drone DJI inspire 2 and parrot bebop2 but they called me and said you can fly your drone but it should not be close to the airport

  31. Mel's World on August 7, 2021 at 10:16 pm

Wow geeze! That’s a lot have to do.

  32. Gary Eaton on August 7, 2021 at 10:19 pm

  38. LODI_CAKE on August 7, 2021 at 10:23 pm

Yah, that was so easy. Its like calling a 1800 number and waiting for someone to talk to you😂 and hope your problem will be solve😂👍🙌

  39. supreme12 on August 7, 2021 at 10:24 pm

You know i dont even care about FAA rules. I just use common sense when flying my drone. I live within 1.5 miles of a small airport. Even if i was allowed to fly over 400ft i still wouldnt do it for safety reasons. I dont want to endanger the lives of others by flying my drones irresponsibly. I fly really low like only 9 to 12ft in the air when im in my backyard and i dont fly far away. I only fly for practice at home. I leave this area completely to fly higher and farther.

  40. bellelise on August 7, 2021 at 10:24 pm

Awesome. See! It totally pays to work together. I’m going to be doing this in the next month. I’m kinda scared. I really hope it works like it should. I believe in this. I have a question…This kind of clearance, requires testing and certification across the board (any drone), even a Mavic Mini, right?

  41. Captain Everything on August 7, 2021 at 10:25 pm

Some echo in your recording. But you are very responsible and great editing. Thanks for sharing. Very helpful. Take Care

Big mistake is buying a dji M2P drone that comes with a STUPID and never intelligent battery. These batteries gets pregnant after 9 months of purchase (Battery swells) causing the battery to be ejected from the drone during flight, ending in a crash. dji are so devilish by indicating in their policy that batteries are covered for 6 months only, because they know that at 9 month these batteries are giving birth. And the biggest mistake I did was buying the fly more kit and an additional battery to make it 4 batteries in total. All of the batteries now are swelled up. Mind you that I take good care of my stuff, for the batteries, I always discharge them to 40% if I’m not planing to use for more than 10 days, fully charge and discharge on a regular bases and always stored in a cool place between 15 to 25 degrees in a secure sealed hard case by Nanuk.
Called dji for replacement, they rejected my request although I have bought the care refresh and the Select member which was never used once…!

  46. Jake Colbert on August 7, 2021 at 10:30 pm

  47. Chris Falco on August 7, 2021 at 10:30 pm

    Very funny stuff

  48. Matthew Carty on August 7, 2021 at 10:31 pm

It is strange that you don’t feel flight application before your flights!
You need to provide your all flight, drone, and your information.
Every location has own flight regulations.
This is the first time I see this!

  50. Steven Kirkland on August 7, 2021 at 10:33 pm

Love it. Show respect, know the rules. I love it
