Amazon Receives FAA Approval for Drone Delivery – The Beginning of the End?

Amazon was just awarded a Part 135 certificate from the FAA, clearing the way for automated drone deliveries beyond visual line of sight. A lot of testing needs to be conducted yet, but this is yet another step towards pushing hobbyists out of the airspace. Let me know you thoughts in the comments! Let’s visit!

    This is stealth move between the FAA and Amazon, (and now Walmart!) in implementing delivery services. The average citizen, especially in the suburbs and rural America, has no idea what is on the horizon. Coming are noisy and ugly delivery drones, flying routine daily missions on established flyways, right above our homes. Kiss privacy and quiet goodbye. The average drone community will likely become highly regulated with the shots called by Amazon via the FAA. Why not add surveillance cameras to Amazon/Walmart drones to watch for "fires, accidents and unauthorized activities" under the guise of "added community protection"? How about an electronic banner to make a little extra money while flying by your home? Will there be an impact on wildlife? Absolutely, but who cares? Implement quietly then grow it bigger. This will negatively change our quality of life. COVID 19 was the best thing that could happen to Amazon and Walmart.

    Hey Russ my name is Jeremy and I see this YouTube video and if I’m hearing him correct in the video he is saying the FAA is watching peoples videos on YouTube to find violations. How is this legal? He states in the video he was contacted 2 times this way. I’m just confused about how this is ok really because to me that’s a violation of privacy.     First, Russ, I really like your channel and videos.

    I am not at all surprised that the FAA has granted conditional approval for Drone Delivery. None of us is going to stop the quick movement forward of the robotic era. Drones are just one element. Take a look at self driving trucks. Yes, they are on the highways now in many government sanctioned tests. Same with just about every mode of transportation. In the future you will see fewer human truck drivers, cab drivers, visual drone pilots, in addition to private vehicles changes.

    I am an FAA licensed uSAS pilot. I did not get my license to do a lot of commercial work but out of a strong sense that drone pilots need the training and some oversight for safety. We all know that drones are so sophisticated these days that you can take them out of the box and fly them fairly well with almost no training, effort or understanding of the rules. We stood by and watched many idiots hurt the "sport" by not knowing, understanding or following the rules. They fly in controlled airspace, over people, obstruct accident and disaster scenes and operate recklessly. Not the majority, but enough to taint the sport.

    We have to have driver’s licenses to operate a car and it was and is inevitable that it will at some time be required of all drones.

    As far as safety and security, DJI just announced that they will be adding features that will block certain concerns over China owned companies having drone supplied data. But that that will solve only part of the problem of government requirement for internet connectivity.
    The real issue is security. Drones can get in controlled airspace and much worse, they can be weaponized. So once again, the great majority of people will be impacted by the very few.

    Not sure I agree with you completely. As Ken mentioned, battery tech is not there, and probably will never be for the new future. The cost of operating the devices would be put back on the consumer, and nobody will pay $80 for the $20 part, and that’s if you live within 15 min flying distance to a distribution center. While I can see some applications, medical emergency and such, does anybody need their box of candy or snacks that quickly? It is a terrible waste of money.

    amazon crashes one of there drones are just going to blame other people drones and the size they are going to be, they will really hurt people, only delivery drones should be for hospital organs, you will get someone trying to crash on and get free stuff, do not see this ending well, people are still going to fly there current stuff

    I already do full autonomous flights with Litchi on my MP2 and am able to capture some of the best videos and pictures I can ever do with a drone, time, and time again, and can easily fly the drone several miles out of line sight to capture images if I really wanted to. The idea of the Mavic mini or other sub 250grams or lighter drones is great for toy hobbyists and small FPV drones, but not really an option for others who need more than a toy and need flight durability, flight distance, flight time, and good quality videos and photos.

    Just because you can do something, doesn’t mean that you should!! I hate this drone delivery concept for companies like Amazon. I predict that it will be much more of a headache for everyone than anyone is anticipating. Try to imagine scaling up a beehive, to the size of an Amazon distribution center!! Yeah, I’d love to live next to that place [sarcasm]!!! And I’m waiting for people to use the Remote ID to locate these things in realtime and people shooting them down to steal the contents. Do you really think the cops could respond in time, before someone takes off with that nice iPhone that was being delivered??!! I’m interested to know who these drones will be delivering to?? Are they going to be smart enough to drop it in the back yard, fly in and place the package on a front porch or just drop it on the front lawn for God and country to see? I think this would be great to deliver to rural and sparsely populated areas, more service equity for those fine folks. But deliveries in a city or even suburb will have its challenges. I’d love to see their business plan on this concept, but I’m still not a fan. Further, if companies abandon this idea, is the FAA going to roll back all those regulations and open up the skies?? I think not.

    The way that I have understood it is that many of these companies will drive a delivery truck with multiple drones in it into the countryside and then deploy them from the truck to the Homes for delivery and then back to the truck. This keeps the drivers from having to drive on windy dangerous roads, many of which are unpaved or dirt in rural areas… So, I think rural areas may actually be just as affected as city areas if not more…

    I agree Russ, it has ALWAYS been about big $$$. I’ve said this ever since they proposed the NPRM in regard to REMOTE ID. Its a shame that the FAA can be bought, but why not, seems like every other thing in our government can be. BIG MONEY!!! Reminds me of an old saying, The rich get richer and the poor have babies.     I fly my drones around the house and my subdivision is your typical cement subdivision. Even though it’s cement side streets/sidewalks there are a lot of trees and when I’m fly I have to make sure to clear them with my DJI drones. I fly over unoccupied streets and sidewalks, never go over anyone’s house other than my own. I live about 3 to 4 miles away from an Amazon Distribution center and I really don’t see them delivering packages to some of my neighbors who have nice big trees blocking their entire houses or a good portion of their houses. One I can see many crashes or "unable" to deliver the package to the house Second even if they can deliver the packages by drone in my part of the city – it’s going to take more time for the drone pilot to deliver the package than it would be for a driver to zip up to house and drop it off. Where’s the savings in that? Besides, it’s going to look pretty comical seeing a drone trying to avoid obstacles getting to the house. I guess they could have a "drop off" area, but I can’t see people going for that as they want the package(s) delivered directly to the house besides being a great shopping place for thieves. While I feel bad for us drone flyers, I feel even worse for the RC hobbyist who fly airplanes and helicopters. Awhile back I seen two guys flying RC airplanes on a empty baseball field that looked pretty cool. They would have to definitely modify their current system drastically compared to drone flyers. I know DJI right now is developing drones for the upcoming new FAA requirements and it wouldn’t surprise me if their DJI drones didn’t already have that technology. Leave it to big corporations and government to put the screws to the little guy or gal.

    rules are rules.. and if it says- line of site. then they must have line of site or… NO delivery. but to change the rules to favor the big buck industry’ bull crap… then the same rules should apply to me . so what i get to fly over crowds and out of site of my .. NO this is unsafe and irresponsible.. for me and for amazon ! but i am sure they will be exempt from prosecution. just like the vaccination company’s. solution : don’t buy from amazon ! screw the drone delivery market.. i support truckers !..LOL

    While I think there is no good billionaire, particularly the reality TV fake ones, I think you are blowing things out of proportion and your argument that the whole air space 122 m (400 ft) is simply going to be "banned" for hobbyists all together, because all 122 m AGL of air space now belongs to Bezos is pretty exaggerated and baseless…(unless the said hobbyist is caught flying illegally within a prohibited air space or controlled air space without the proper LAANC , then yeah that person should be educated & the fines are pretty steep)… So hobby guys, get your part 107 folks, learn a thing or two about air space and weather… Also, the delivery of large weight packages is going to take a very long time until energy delivery technology improves …
    What I picture, (no research, just my thoughts…) is well defined channels of air space like MTRs but for drone delivery traffic, maybe will be called DDTs… All UAS pilots including hobbits should have to learn where those are and avoid entering. Smart controllers that are like mini TC screens so we all know where other aircraft is in relationship with our drone, would be very cool technology to have. So, what I do picture is probably the FAA pushing for more education even for hobbyists…. Like, right now, do a hobbyist know how to read sectional charts or how to check NOTAMS to see if a MOA is active? Or what a MTR or a MCAS are and why they should avoid flying within those? Or the difference between a Restricted and a Prohibited areas and how can one fly inside a Restricted area? I think the key here is more education… $160 bucks to get your Part 107 and then every two years to stay current and up to speed on all procedures and regulations is not a big price to pay… & if things change, I’m not saying to just sit down and do nothing, get also educated on the wording of the legislation and band together if it starts to lean too much towards the billionaires… which we all should be doing any way…

    The sub 250g regulation can change at anytime. If all hobbyists go sub 250g this would push legislators to drop the weight even lower, if the right lobbyists make the right "donations".

    I knew they would get a pass on VLOS! Part 107 pushes how important for safety VLOS is and is basically the premise of safe flight.

    Big Dollar Business, don’t worry, those rules were just for peasants like me… even though I have years of flying experience over you!.

    I will continue flying my 5” quads till I stop breathing. I will not comply when the ruling agency flat out breaks their own rules with a technology they did NOT invent.

    I’m a "Newbie" to the drone world but even I can "see thru the smoke". You are right. It’s all about the "Benjamin’s". We live in a Capitalistic society. It has always been about the money. Unfortunately, they have the ability to pay for what they want and, the ear of the legislator’s to clear the airways of recreational drones all at the same time. I think you are also correct in thinking that manufacturers’ will innovate. I think we will see a proliferation of smaller (less than 250gr) drones with hi-tech capabilities as time goes on. Batteries will continue to improve as well. The recreational drone industry won’t be totally lost but the "cost of admission" will likely be much higher.

    Interesting Video, I am in the UK and restrictions are supposed to be fairly simple, but when you look at them and try to put them into practice, it is not long before you can be breaking some kind of law if you are not careful. It may not be happening very soon, but I am sure that the technology will have to also spread to the drone enthusiast in order for Drones to talk to each other to avoid collisions and stay below airline flights. I think there is a lot to be discussed as Governments like money too and to prevent the use/purchase of drones would cause serious financial problems for drone manufacturers and also loss of the TAX that the sales bring in!! Money Indeed is the Key to it all πŸ™‚ Even the Mavic Mini may not be safe as 249g Drone could bring down a 3kg drone along with the enormous box that Amazon puts a very small item into πŸ˜‰

    Why do you believe that the FAA won’t protect Part135 drone operations from recreational mini drones? The big package delivery services will become the biggest lobbying group to require mini drone regulations.

    Don’t think this is to help the customers with "30-minute deliveries". It’s to be able to eliminate the high-overhead cost of drivers , their managers, and get rid of part of the fleet of delivery trucks. I’ve thought a lot about this while at job sites. With current technology, it’s not feasible for them to fly into most sites I’ve visited in the last year, including yesterday, right under the flight path of an International Airport (100 ft LAANC zone). Urban? They must be crazy. The risk of dropping that monstrosity on people with all the power lines and trees would make their insurance underwriters jump off a cliff. The risk of the wrong person collecting the item is even worse. The same for many suburban areas, at least those established ones with 100-150 foot trees, power lines, even light poles. I’ve had quite a few house inspections where I had to fly beneath a canopy of trees the whole time. Imagine getting one of their swinging cables wrap around the branch of a small bush or the power going out when one gets stuck in power lines. This will work while testing out in the open with underground cables or with fixed routes. Delivering to random houses however, not safe. The FAA should look at the real risk of doing this in the real world, not be pressured to look at it in a clean lab-like environment.

    Love your content as always. Again money talks. Amazon has the money to create drones to do whatever they want with technology today. If they want they can create a drone to come into your house to drop off toilet paper if you run out while your on the crapper. They won’t have a problem design autonomous drones to avoid people, cars, aircrafts, trees etc..

    Greetings from Cyprus in Europe. So far we have the new EASA regulations becoming law in Europe as of December 31, 2020. Luckily we don’t have big business and the rich thugs threatening our airspace yet, but you can see it coming. This was never about safety, it is all about money as Russ points out. Of course Amazon got clearance from the FAA (what a surprise eh?) They haven’t even got the balls to admit the truth. Disgusting! Cheers

    Why? Well, I’ll be first in the queue to order something by drone because there is absolutely no way a delivery drone can negotiate the trees, cables, aerials and birds around my property! No AI system currently available will have the ability to drop any parcel in my garden and certainly no crappy drone pilot flying remotely via FPV, while juggling 20 other drones will be able to make that drop, without getting tangled in the trees.πŸ˜πŸ˜―πŸ‘πŸ˜Ž
    In fact I’ve already made space in my garage for an Inspire 2 sized drone. Bring it on πŸ‘πŸ˜Ž
    There will be many more hazards in an urban environment, such as roads, cars, property and of course people, if one of these heavy delivery drones come crashing out of the sky, chances are something or someone is going to get damaged or injured!
    Theft is also going to be an issue! These things will be an easy target for thieves, once they figure out how to intercept these drones and bring them down, theft of the packages will be a big problem!
    The other issue is the logistics of flying multiple drones over multiple deliveries, while making it cost effective and profitable? I can’t see it being profitable for a long time until battery tech is far more advanced because for every 30 mins of flight time it’s going to be out of action for at least 1hr 45mins while it charges up, unless you hot swap pre charged batteries, again major issues in hot climates with drones over heating etc
    I can see it working in very niche medical supply type situations ie hospital to hospital delivering samples, blood, organs, medicines etc the infrastructure needed will mostly be in place. Or delivering medicines in wide open rural locations over a wide area, where delivering them by road would be difficult, then drone delivery would be ideal.
    But delivering multiple small packages in built up cities, no chance! πŸ€”πŸ˜―
    Back in the 1970s they predicted we’ll all be travelling around in flying cars by the year 2000……..apart from styling the car has remained pretty much unchanged over the last 40-50 years!! πŸ€”πŸ˜―πŸ˜

    I wonder how many people are thinking movie making/large hobby size drones? I’m thinking Amazon will have 5 and 6 foot diameter & larger drones for good size deliveries out away from the big cities. Maybe bigger, much bigger. Think about delivering farm supplies, tractor parts, big rigs stranded out in the middle of nowhere…….I think, Bezos is thinking like Elon Musk would…..on a grand scale of many different size drones, with the best electronics available, not just the consumer type things, but airliner type electronics and military quality. I don’t think Bezos is gonna play around…….he’s going to go all in eventually for an automated fleet of really well made super high end drones that no one sees coming…..IMHO of course……That’s how I’d do it…..
