My impression about QA just went downhill

Your comparisons don’t work because all of those examples are product-based examples. In every service-based industry (where a physical product is not the focus of a customer’s purchase), companies reserve the right to adjust services provided, with or without notice. It’s all in the tiny print that most don’t read.

Oh well. I won’t be too excited abt my flight on Qatar

  6. Michael X on December 17, 2021 at 12:01 pm

At least you were able to get through to QR on the phone lol. That’s another whole thing on its own. This last week, all their global customer service lines were off. All of them. The world over.

  7. Ali Al-Ansari on December 17, 2021 at 12:02 pm

Hey Dan, it’s almost the end of 2021 and I still experience this problem. Nothing has changed since you visited them to resolve this. I had two flights this year switch from Qsuite to the old configuration (one happening tmw and was just changed) and as a local citizen in Qatar we pay insane prices compared to international customers just to use the business class… very frustrating.

This is all prepandemic I assume. Equipment change? Hey, lotsa planes out in dry desert areas now. Pick one and take off, eh!

  12. Michael R Murphy on December 17, 2021 at 12:04 pm

In fact I did NOT get that reference! And QA is a flying sweatshop last I heard.

Qatar Airways have excellent inflight service but I experienced racial discrimination from QR check in counter in Rome Fiumicino Airport on my flight home to Manila. They bullied me for my overweight baggage (in comparison, the check in counter at Etihad in Manila were polite and facilitated payment for overweight baggage without drama). The check-in counter told me that my Philippine passport is not a passport. She even forced me to sign a document that “Qatar Airways will not be held liable for letting me fly without a passport etc. etc.” then called a Fiumicino airport ground staff to escort me through security and immigration as if I was a criminal. 🙁

  17. AlliBaba1234 on December 17, 2021 at 12:08 pm

Uh, US airlines must reserve compensation and indeed any type of customer service or accountability, for business and first-class passengers. Because United has stranded me (once with a large group) multiple times and never given a DAMN what happened to me.

  20. arctan on December 17, 2021 at 12:14 pm

I choose my flights (accordingly the Airplanes) very wisely if they take longer than 5 hours. And not only Qatar has (or had?) this issue, but so many others are practicing the same. If I book a flight on the 787-9 dreamline I want to fly with that plane and not with a A319 which provides a complete different and worse experience.

I’m watching in may 2021, in aircraft changes I think that Qatar is not the worst, Neos Air is staring to bother me, I want to try their 737 MAX, and they are continuing to change aircrafts on various flight, and I have to fly in two weeks…

  23. Tortenschieber mit Senf on December 17, 2021 at 12:16 pm

I just went through a nightmare with them. They cancelled my flight two times and finally dont have a seat for me within the next ten weeks to Australia even i had an E-Ticket stating confirmed. Never ever Qatar again. Qatar just sends you emails. Emirates calles you when there are changes. At least in Business Class. Hello Emirates i am back.

    LUGGAGE TIPS 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7
Tie three or four colored ribbons around the handle to your luggage to warn others that this is not their luggage. People grab luggage at the turnstile and take it home before you ever see it.

Anywhere you put your bag, it could be grabbed in error. Example: overhead compartment, unloaded from the bus, at the hotel lobby, at the airport turnstile…

These ribbons make your luggage different and EASY TO SPOT when the piece is surrounded by 35 other cases unloaded from the bus. Using 4 ribbons make it immediately different than other cases with 1 ribbon.

Use 1” wide ribbons 14” long and not longer. Cut the ends at 45 degrees.

Tie the ribbons as a sandwich, as if they were one ribbon. Use a man’s tie, a half Windsor knot for the best look. After it is tied on, the total length of the ribbons will be about 5 inches from the handle. This is too short to catch on anything such as rollers.

Scissor cut trim the ribbons to cascading different lengths after they are tied. Put a drop of Super Glue at the end.
If each ribbon is slightly a different length by 1/4” the color layers will all show up no matter how they drape.

You can see these ribbons from 40 feet away.
Perhaps tie TWO handles or RINGS top and side of the case.
Tie using a HALF WINDSOR KNOT to the metal buckle ring of the handle.

    Learn Half Windsor knot tying:
It is the 2nd example in this video
    https://youtu.be/X0yh5rKB9lE
    This knot does not loosen.

Put your phone number on one ribbon using a fine point permanent Sharpie.
    Example: “Owner 454-333-7878”
    No personal name necessary.
No address necessary on the ribbon.

Choose one ribbon with an unusual pattern or fabric to really make it unique. The 4th ribbon could be black color.

Stand by the output port of the turnstile to reduce the chance of someone else grabbing your piece.

Tie your skiies, duffel bag, backpack and what ever else with matching ribbons—even your computer case.

If you are a Travel Agent, you could hot gold stamp one ribbon with your name and phone number. Send them a set of ribbons, red and blue and BLACK to your customer as a gift. Record this gift in your database so you don’t duplicate yourself.
Buy a gold hot embossing machine. Gold emboss your business name on the BLACK ribbon. Put the customer’s name on it if possible.

    Pleasant color combinations:
    Red, white and blue
    Chartreuse and purple and orange
    Orange and light blue
    Orange and yellow
    Gray and pink
    Green and yellow
    Red and Green
    Red and Gold
Light blue and light green and white

The 4th ribbon could be white, gray, black, tan

Tip #2 Take a cell phone picture of the ribbon tied on. Then another picture of the full luggage piece. You now have a way to communicate “what it looks like” if someone is tasked with searching for it.
You can show this picture to the searcher or attach a picture to your report for lost luggage.

Take this picture outside in direct sun not under neon lights.

Tip #3 Place a strip of colored duct tape on the inside lining to your case. Put TWO pieces in DIFFERENT places such as INSIDE a pocket to the case. If you dare, put your phone number DIRECTLY ON THE FABRIC Liner of the case WITHOUT USING TAPE. Or, put your name and phone number on this tape. If all identity is stripped from your case, you have this to show. If someone steals it and rips off identity tags, you can show the police officer the inside tape…

To be sneaky about the tape, put your phone number on the STICKY side of the tape. Nothing is on the surface side of this tape.

    Tip #4
Put your phone number on a 2” x 1/2” piece of fabric or plastic sheet. Use colored Duct tape, such as black or red or neon, to tape this message to the top side of the handle. This message is under the tape hidden from view. The lettering does not touch the sticky part. Wrap it 2-3 times. Also include Tips 1,2,3 above. If you need to prove identity of the case, just unwrap it and show.

    Tip #5 ADDING UNIQUENESS
    4 ribbons
    1 designer ribbon
    colored taped handle
stencil SPRAY PAINT a 2 1/2” stencil letter or number or word or your initials to the suit case exterior surface in addition to using all the other ideas here.

Stencil spray paint a letter to the TOP ribbon.
Use ribbons that are wider or more narrow than 1”.
Put a travel sticker on the case.

    Tip #6 WEIGH YOUR OWN
Scales accuracy varies at different airports. If you are even 1 pound over, you pay. So, regulate yourself. Found on Ebay, buy a
    HAND HELD DIGITAL SCALE
    It is less than $15.

    Tip #7 GPS TRACKING DEVICE
Duct tape to an inside pocket a GSM GPS Tracking device. Find them on Ebay. Your iphone can tell you where your luggage is.
Is it in another city? https://youtu.be/qJkUSNIBsP0

QR has an amazing hard product but their staff are awful and useless! I am Gold Member with BA Program, but they did not allow me to enter the Lounge ni DOH because it was a mileage ticket. I asked to speak to a supervisor, and waited for 45 minutes… of course I was not allowed. I had to send 5 complaints to their online service, but it was a waste of time.

    Emirates is the best

  29. Mark on December 17, 2021 at 12:25 pm

Great content Dan, but I don’t think you know how things work in the Middle East. Some important Qatari sheikh and his family (or other Qatari VIP) no doubt wanted Q suites on their route, and so aircraft were changed to accommodate this. It’s not uncommon…

  30. Vagabond Mom on December 17, 2021 at 12:26 pm

  32. A A on December 17, 2021 at 12:30 pm

US companies are the best when it comes to honoring contracts. Just goes to show the strength of the US judicial system, despite all its flaws, it is still the best. I’ve never had a problem dealing with any major US company when it comes to honoring policy. US companies get abused out of their policy, if anything.

As first world problems go, this is a pretty awful way to run a dollar store let alone a premier league airline.

  41. Hirudinee Manukulasuriya [Ward, Gene ES] on December 17, 2021 at 12:44 pm

This literally just happened to me. I booked business class and I’m flying out in three weeks. I got an email couple of days back saying the 777 with Q-suites was changed to airbus 330. And if I wish to be in a Q suite I have find another flight with that. I don’t have time to change flights and I’m already flying with two transits in my trip. It’s sad that they do this once I was confirmed and all. But oh well. It is what it is. Let’s just hope they won’t change the flight again and I won’t loose the seats I pre-selected.

  43. hrysivjt67 on December 17, 2021 at 12:47 pm

Why is a publicly subsidized airline with more financial assets and operational flexibility than God pinching pennies like this… first by over-optimizing their equipment use and then by squabbling over miniscule compensation for something that was completely the airline’s fault? First rule of customer service: The Customer Is Always Right. #2: First class and business class fliers are THE MOST IMPORTANT CUSTOMERS TO PLEASE. #3 Qatar Airways undoubtedly spent more money on the labor hours needed to respond to Dan’s issues than the compensation needed. So in summary, they spent more money to make their customer unhappy, which resulted in a video that half a million people have seen. This is a case study in WHY CUSTOMER SERVICE MATTERS. You would think an airline that’s #1 in the sky would have a culture throughout their entire enterprise that reflects that brand. But instead, this is just a reminder that no matter how much oil money this region has, they’re still babies on the world stage and don’t yet know how to run a world-class company from top to bottom to ensure these kinds of service discontinuities don’t happen.

  44. Kristos Pavlou on December 17, 2021 at 12:48 pm

Qatar has left me stranded in Uganada after cancelling flights, no compensation, no help getting home your right The on board service is first class but behind the scenes the customer service is beyond appalling, just as you say there’s a feeling they really don’t care about your future custom.

  45. Mr. Frogggy on December 17, 2021 at 12:49 pm

you probably could have filed a lawsuit against them.

  47. don marcello on December 17, 2021 at 12:51 pm

it’s not a crazy long video it the truth, I booked 12 qsuite flys and I got 9 in the old config! from this moment I resigned from the airline! I am swiss and for our airline, it would be a shame! thanks a lot to make it public!

  48. Greeshma Ganji on December 17, 2021 at 12:51 pm

My flight changed from airbus 380 to boeing 787-9 😐. Guess qatar always keeps changing aircrafts.

  49. bgjandm on December 17, 2021 at 12:53 pm

Dan, So did you ever get this resolved?

  50. Ora Tantimed on December 17, 2021 at 12:54 pm

Conclusion: Paying a premium to attempt to experience Q-Suite on Qatar has a higher than 50% probability of not getting the Q-Suite experience & Not getting appropriate compensation. Seems similar to a bait&switch scheme?
