I’m heartbroken and very confused. Was flying my dji mavic mini at a lake in a local park (not state or national so legal)

I just took off at the docks, press up and up on the controller (so drone should fly forward and upwards) instead it flew sideways and down for some reason and crashed into the lake. Was unable to retrieve it. I had over 8 satellites, I waited for it to update and say it was safe to fly and for it to locate RTH. Didn’t compass collaborate this time but I did earlier in the day and it didn’t ask me to this time.

When I saw what was happening I tried to make it go straight up but it just didn’t listen to me and kept going straight down. Almost like magnetism or something was pulling it. Brand new props and everything just got it back from dji (last wreck was 100% my fault didn’t see the back of a grey sign and my grey drone ran straight into it) I don’t understand what I did wrong or what happened, I thought they fixed it. There was no obvious large metal structures or anything that I could see.

I did take it for one test flight earlier in the day by my apartment and it flew great. So really not sure what the issue was or why this happened to me.

    Wind was only 3mph

The advice on the VPS system. Does this only apply to the MAVIC? In order to shut off the VPS on drones like the P3P, you have to be in A mode. A mode over the water is a very bad idea.

Beautiful beach! I wish I had watched this before my first flight over water. I made a rookie mistake of concentrating on the "video" more than my drone flight. I posted a short version of it and have been told that the down facing sensors actually turn off over water on the Mavic Air… but I’m not sure. Here’s my video: https://youtu.be/17IRxYFD7so In the comments you can go to a UK YouTuber with a much larger audience than I have and see what they say about it when he did a feature of my experience. What do you think?

Hello, Thx for tips . Actually i love landing and taking off my drone on quiet beach because less people around and always worry about sand get in the drone . I have Mavic Air so not easy to catch by hands
Like you said we should not landing on sand even i do have a pad for drone to land on ?
How do I contact a air control tower of the location i play with the drone? I was in Aitutaki , Cook Islands last month, get very frustrated because the resort don’t allow drones flying in front of property, I found a quiet spot away from resort and being force landing because within airport radius. I m not a commercial, just want to take pics myself on beach and can’t do it . Feel like wasting money with the drone because so much rules out there , can’t play with it
Help me out , how do I find phone numbers of those air control towers ? Thanks

Note also according to the FAA that aircraft must maintain an altitude of 500 feet above the surface EXCEPT over open water or sparsely populated areas. I fly around Waikiki Beach and tour helicopters are passing over the surfers almost once every few minutes just offshore very low.
